A Las Vegas Sun<\/em> roundup of the presidential field<\/a> gives some helpful guidance. For instance, we’ve long known that Jeb Bush<\/strong> (R) was anti-\"christie\"<\/a>casino, despite gambling expansion on his watch in Florida<\/strong>. Martin O’Malley<\/strong> (D) was in similar circumstances in Maryland<\/strong> but could at best be called a lukewarm supporter<\/a>. Enthusiastic supporters are relatively few: Lincoln Chafee<\/strong> (D), Chris Christie<\/strong> (R, left<\/em>) and Donald Trump<\/strong> (R) and, at least to an extent, Rand Paul<\/strong> (R). Bernie Sanders<\/strong>‘ (D) position is inscrutable, although Vermont<\/strong> is hostile territory to gaming, while George Pataki<\/strong> (R) is schizoid, strongly supportive of terrestrial gambling but opposed to it on the Internet<\/strong>. GOP candidates are more often than not opposed to Web wagering … they want Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>‘s money after all.<\/p>\n

Some candidates were against gambling before they were for it, such as Hillary Clinton<\/strong> (D), Ted Cruz<\/strong> (R) and Jon Kasich<\/strong> (R, below<\/em>). Others have consistently been against it, including Bobby Jindal<\/strong> (R, \"Kasich_John\"<\/a>who’d like to confiscate unclaimed gambling winnings), Mike Huckabee<\/strong> (R), Lindsey Graham<\/strong> (R), Scott Walker<\/strong> (R), Marco Rubio<\/strong> (R, no friend of tribal gaming), Rick Santorum<\/strong> (R) and Rick Perry<\/strong> (R). The latter, however, enjoys a complicated relationship with Station Casinos<\/strong>, which lost $100 million in Texas<\/strong> teacher-pension money in its LBO gone bad. “Complicated” would also describe Walker’s relationship with Wisconsin<\/strong> tribes but that’s still likelier to go over better in Indian Country than memories of Bush’s “Call me Bwana” attitude toward the Seminole Tribe<\/strong>, which futilely tried to negotiate a compact with him.<\/p>\n

Gambling will hardly be a “wedge issue” in this campaign, not least because the federal government’s power to intervene is so limited (thank God). But if you like playing online, your choices are decidedly limited.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
