{"id":16542,"date":"2015-08-06T14:42:57","date_gmt":"2015-08-06T22:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=16542"},"modified":"2015-08-13T09:38:56","modified_gmt":"2015-08-13T17:38:56","slug":"lucky-horseshoe-for-maryland-old-mcdonald-had-a-casino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/lucky-horseshoe-for-maryland-old-mcdonald-had-a-casino\/","title":{"rendered":"Lucky Horseshoe for Maryland; Old McDonald had a casino"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What would have been a revenue-negative July for <strong>Maryland<\/strong> casinos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/baltimore\/news\/2015\/08\/05\/marylands-casinos-brought-in-a-record-99-million.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">turned into their biggest month ever<\/a>, thanks to <strong>Horseshoe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/caesarscasino_1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14803\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/caesarscasino_1.png\" alt=\"caesarscasino_1\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/caesarscasino_1.png 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/caesarscasino_1-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>Baltimore<\/strong>. Gaming revenue rose more $23\u00a0million, with all that and more coming from the <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> property. While the casino is still short of projections, it&#8217;s still making the difference between a growing gaming market and a saturated one.<\/p>\n<p>Not too much skin came off <strong>Maryland Live<\/strong>&#8216;s nose, as the <strong>Cordish Gaming<\/strong> property was only down 2%, grossing <!--more-->a state-leading $57 million. <strong>Hollywood Casino Perryville<\/strong> brought in only $7 million for <strong>GLPI<\/strong>\u00a0<del>Penn National Gaming<\/del>, an 8% decline. Business was good, however, for <strong>The Casino at Ocean Downs<\/strong> ($6 million), up 5% and way out west at <strong>Rocky Gap Casino<\/strong> ($4 million), which nudged 4% upwards.<\/p>\n<p>* Racino owner <strong>Jeff Gural<\/strong> hopes the second time will be the charm for his attempt to upgrade to full casino status in <strong>New York State<\/strong>. But will 24 additional hotel rooms and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/money\/business\/2015\/08\/05\/tioga-downs-casino-application-revamped\/31185513\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">a whimsical country fair theme<\/a>\u201d do the trick? The state gaming commission&#8217;s <strong>Kevin Law<\/strong> said Gural\u00a0\u201ccan\u2019t just put lipstick on his current proposal and expect us to approve it.\u201d Gural has to be hoping that the promise of day spa, 12,000-seat outdoor concert facility and (maybe) the purchase of <strong>Tioga Country Club<\/strong> keep <strong>Tioga Downs<\/strong> 2.0 from going &#8220;Oink.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Congratulations to <strong>Robert Sheldon<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/penn-national-closer-tropicana-las-vegas-buy\" target=\"_blank\">newly promoted<\/a> from general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Trop-redesign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Trop-redesign-300x120.jpg\" alt=\"Trop redesign\" width=\"300\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Trop-redesign-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Trop-redesign-150x60.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Trop-redesign-1024x410.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Trop-redesign.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>manager of <strong>Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway<\/strong> to president-designate of the <strong>Tropicana Las Vegas<\/strong>. (This assumes that Penn National&#8217;s purchase goes through, which is a slam dunk.) This is a real feather in Sheldon&#8217;s cap. Penn, meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2015\/aug\/06\/tropicanas-buyer-expects-200m-in-fixes-2-years-fro\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">remains coy<\/a> about what its promised $200 million in capital improvements will exactly entail beyond some new slot machines.<\/p>\n<p>* Some casino hosts get rich off degenerate gamblers. Few have the nerve to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/entertainment\/nation\/confessions-of-the-man-who-wins-big-when-you-lose-it-all-in-vegas?share=c\" target=\"_blank\">rub your nose in it<\/a> like <strong>Steve Cyr<\/strong>, currently hustling high rollers for <strong>Westgate Las Vegas<\/strong>. &#8220;I\u2019ve had had four guys commit suicide because they couldn\u2019t stand being poor due to their gambling losses,&#8221; he brags, including one man Cyr goaded into killing himself.
