The budget for the <strong>China Railway<\/strong> <strong>Group<\/strong>\/<strong>XpressWest Enterprises<\/strong> \u00a0joint venture hasn&#8217;t been disclosed but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-09-17\/china-u-s-reach-agreement-on-high-speed-rail-before-xi-visit\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">$100 million in startup capital has been committed<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Xpress-West.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Xpress-West-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"Xpress West\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a>fund the 230-mile route, with September 2016 penciled in as the starting date. Now, it&#8217;s a 270-mile drive from <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> to Las Vegas, so that raises the question of whether the train will link the two cities or drop off passengers somewhere else (like <strong>Primm<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Four years in the making, the agreement is meant to herald Chinese\u00a0President <strong>Xi Jinping<\/strong>\u2019s visit to the states. Factories in China are already <!--more-->building subway cars for <strong>Boston<\/strong>, so the idea of a Chinese-made train scooting across the desert Southwest doesn&#8217;t seem so far-fetched &#8230; if it can get priority over <strong>Union Pacific<\/strong> freight trains, another question that has been begged for the time being. China can boast of\u00a010,565 miles of high-speed rail back home, which far exceeds anything on the U.S.&#8217; resume. Since previous attempts to link Las Vegas to the City of Angels by rail have come up snake eyes, it seems only fair to give the Chinese a shot at it.<\/p>\n<p>* While he was on the East Coast, wooing the <strong>Georgia<\/strong>\u00a0Legislature, <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> stopped in our nation&#8217;s capital to drop of a $1 million check for the\u00a0<strong>Smithsonian Institution<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>National Museum of African American History &amp;\u00a0Culture<\/strong>, slated to open next year. The museum will trace African <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Murren.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Murren-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Murren\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Murren-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Murren-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Murren.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Americans&#8217; history, from its ugly beginnings in slavery through the Civil Rights movement and beyond. Reiterating MGM&#8217;s commitment to corporate diversity, Murren added,\u00a0&#8220;MGM Resorts is proud to support the Smithsonian&#8217;s addition of this museum in honor and celebration of the unique role of African Americans in the evolution of America into the great nation that it is today.&#8221; If you visit the\u00a0<strong>National Museum of American History<\/strong>, you can preview the NMAAHC in the form of two temporary galleries entitled,\u00a0&#8220;Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and The March on Washington, 1963&#8221; &#8230; kind of a &#8216;greatest hits&#8217; compilation of American progress.<\/p>\n<p>* In its newest installation of public art, MGM has imported <strong>Tatsuo Miyajima<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Hoto<\/em> (&#8220;Treasure Pagoda&#8221;), a <strong>Crystals<\/strong>-sited sculpture 18 feet tall and six feet in diameter, studded with almost 4,000 LED numerical displays. They symbolize both the universal language of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Hoto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Hoto-300x145.jpg\" alt=\"Hoto\" width=\"300\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Hoto-300x145.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Hoto-150x72.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Hoto.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>math (but without any zeroes) and the cycle of life. The inspiration for <em>Hoto<\/em>, derived from Buddhist scripture, is &#8220;a monumental bejeweled tower that emerges from the ground, floats midair and covers half the world, symbolizing the importance of every human life.&#8221; Murren says &#8220;we continuously search for new and innovative ways to celebrate&#8221; Japanese art and tradition. We applaud the initiative but we&#8217;d also call it &#8220;sucking up to <strong>Japan<\/strong>,&#8221; as MGM is the most ardent wooer of that company&#8217;s political establishment, pursuing one of those oh-so-evanescent Japanese casinos. You might say they&#8217;re the <em>Hoto<\/em> of the gaming business.<\/p>\n<p>* That bush <a href=\"http:\/\/www.equipmentworld.com\/nevada-dot-saves-historic-mormon-grapevine-from-demolition\/\" target=\"_blank\">you see<\/a>\u00a0might not look like much but it literally embodies 140 years of history. Yes, that <strong>Mormon grapevine<\/strong> (transplanted from <strong>Toquerville<\/strong>, <strong>Utah<\/strong>) has been here since the early 20th century, back\u00a0when <strong>Wilbur Clark<\/strong> put <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> on the map. The <strong>Nevada Department of Transportation<\/strong> was sufficiently reverential of this grapevine that it transplanted it to <strong>Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Park<\/strong>, where it will hopefully live for another 140 years. Its former site, <strong>Meyers Electrical Maintenance<\/strong>, which is slated for demolition as part of the <strong>Project Neon<\/strong> corridor, which will widen <strong>I-15<\/strong> and had placed the old grapevine in danger. As\u00a0<strong>Nevada Department of Transportation<\/strong> spokesman <strong>Tony Illia<\/strong> said,\u00a0\u201cWe were presented with a unique and unexpected opportunity to save a piece of living local history.\u201d Amen to that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>High-speed rail to Las Vegas is &#8220;on&#8221; again, with China emerging as Sin City&#8217;s savior.
