Much sooner than expected, the <strong>Interior Department<\/strong> took 321 acres of <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> land into trust for the tribe. Most of that acreage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Mashpee 4\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4.jpg 738w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>(170 of it) is in <strong>Mashpee<\/strong> but another 151 is in <strong>Taunton<\/strong>, where the tribe hopes to build a casino.\u00a0\u201cWhile some outside the Tribe will focus only on our quest to build a destination resort casino in Taunton in accordance with the federal <strong>Indian Gaming Regulatory Act<\/strong>, for us this goes far beyond economic development. This is about controlling our own destiny and preserving our ancient culture,\u201d said tribal Chairman <strong>Cedric Cromwell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>True, but casino revenues would go a long way toward enabling a number of hoped-for projects, such as preserving <!--more-->historical sites in Mashpee and funding the\u00a0<strong>W\u00f4pan\u00e2ak Language Reclamation Project<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cWe have occupied this land for the past 12,000 years,&#8221; said Cromwell.&#8221; But, over the past four centuries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mashpee-Wamps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mashpee-Wamps.jpg\" alt=\"Mashpee Wamps\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mashpee-Wamps.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mashpee-Wamps-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>much of our ancestral home was taken away from us.\u00a0Our land-into-trust application did not seek to reclaim the entirety of our ancient homeland, which included the eastern part of Massachusetts from <strong>Gloucester Bay<\/strong> all the way to <strong>Narragansett<\/strong>. However, we now have a sovereign base from which we can work to sustain our cultural traditions, develop a thriving tribal economy, and serve the needs of our people as we see fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This sudden turn of events throws a wrench into the casino-approval process in Massachusetts. Although <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong> has said that his proposed <strong>Brockton<\/strong> casino could withstand tribal competition, the <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong> will now probably throw its support to the Mashpee Wampanaogs, lest their 17% a year in gaming taxes be forfeit.
