Despite having poured millions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Sheldon-A.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Sheldon-A-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sheldon A\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Sheldon-A-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Sheldon-A-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Sheldon-A.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a>dollars into the Florida GOP and its prize causes, <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> is no closer to getting a Florida casino than he was back when he nervily proposed that the state give him exclusive rights to build five or six resort-casinos in the state &#8212; or to draw a 75-mile &#8216;line of death&#8217; around every Sands-branded casino.<\/p>\n<p>Nope, Sands is winding down its lobbying operations and turning its attention to <strong>Georgia<\/strong>, where Adelson recently conducted a &#8220;listening&#8221; tour. (The mere fact that Sheldon was listening rather than talking suggests that <!--more-->Hell has frozen over.) \u00a0Sands lobbyist-in-chief <strong>Andy Abboud<\/strong>\u00a0offers that the <strong>Seminole Tribe<\/strong>&#8216;s heavy gaming presence in southern Florida is part of what discouraged\u00a0Sands from further pursuit of its casino chimera, although frustration with the Lege was also implied. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/las-vegas-sands-quits-florida-turns-attention-toward-georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abboud complained<\/a> that &#8220;negotiations with the Seminoles drive everything. They pretty much dominate the landscape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For now, Sands is going to refrain from putting the kind of strong-arm\u00a0tactics in Georgia that it applied to Florida. Abboud said Sands would proceed discreetly and let Georgia lawmakers figure out what they want to do first. It&#8217;s rare to see Sheldon Adelson admit defeat, so his failure to impose his will on Florida is practically a moment of historic proportions.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardplayer.com\/poker-news\/19386-new-casino-in-north-carolina-opens-monday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Although it&#8217;s happening<\/a> in <strong>North Carolina<\/strong>, the opening of\u00a0<strong>Harrah\u2019s Cherokee Valley River Casino<\/strong> may have more effect on Georgia. It moves <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s presence an hour&#8217;s drive closer to <strong>Atlanta<\/strong> and underlines the fact that the Cherokee are drawing off gambling revenues that might be spent in the Peachtree State. It may be too soon for legislators to feel the pressure but that could change when Harrah&#8217;s revenue figures start to emerge.<\/p>\n<p>* In the course of giving a highly conditional endorsement of the <strong>Mashpee Wampanoags<\/strong>&#8216; proposed <strong>Taunton<\/strong> casino, the <em>Boston Globe<\/em> raises <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2015\/09\/28\/tribal-milestone-shouldn-alter-casino-panel-plan\/FZS9sZxqHWjqrglB7iM54I\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a previously undiscussed worst-case scenario<\/a>: The federal courts junk the tribe&#8217;s land-into-trust application <em>and<\/em> the <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong> sends <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Neil-Bluhm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Neil-Bluhm-248x300.jpg\" alt=\"Neil Bluhm\" width=\"248\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Neil-Bluhm-248x300.jpg 248w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Neil-Bluhm-124x150.jpg 124w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Neil-Bluhm.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a>packing (or Bluhm loses patience), leaving the state with <em>no<\/em> viable applicant for Region C. And, one must ask, how long is the MGC prepared to wait (and risking losing both Bluhm&#8217;s <strong>Brockton<\/strong> bid and its 25% tax payments) for the sake of seeing a definitive resolution to the tribe&#8217;s situation?<\/p>\n<p>As the <em>Globe<\/em> observed, lawmakers intended &#8212; but did not specifically earmark &#8211;one license to go to a tribal casino. Nor did voters approve <em>four<\/em> casinos, should the Mashpee Wampanoags go the federal-recognition route. The editorial continues, &#8220;the commission can\u2019t be expected to look through the same rose-tinted glasses as tribal leaders, and clearly can\u2019t treat [tribal Chairman <strong>Cedric<\/strong>] <strong>Cromwell<\/strong>\u2019s forecasts as airtight. It shouldn\u2019t halt consideration of the Brockton casino proposal unless it concludes, through an independent legal analysis, that the tribal casino is now a realistic possibility.&#8221; But, in the end, the <em>Globe<\/em> weighs in cautiously against Bluhm and for the tribe.<\/p>\n<p>Another company seeking to protect its <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> foothold is <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, which has taken the somewhat extraordinary step of suing <strong>Connecticut<\/strong>, hoping to block a third <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mohegan-Sun.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mohegan-Sun-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Mohegan Sun\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mohegan-Sun-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mohegan-Sun-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Mohegan-Sun.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>casino in that state, the joint venture of <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> and <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong>. Nobody&#8217;s making any bones that this isn&#8217;t a cock-block to <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong>, which could draw customers heavily from the <strong>Hartford<\/strong> area, being just up the freeway. According to an editorial in <em>The Day<\/em>, &#8220;MGM cries foul, arguing that providing any special privilege to the tribes violates the U.S. Constitution\u2019s equal protection clause and the spirit of the <strong>Indian Gaming Act<\/strong>, which allows casinos to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Jepsen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16891\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Jepsen.jpg\" alt=\"Jepsen\" width=\"202\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Jepsen.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Jepsen-121x150.jpg 121w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a>operate on federally recognized reservations, as a means of boosting commerce on tribal lands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In response, Attorney General <strong>George Jepsen<\/strong> argues that MGM lacks standing, which it would only have had it applied for a Connecticut casino license and been denied. Furthermore, the company&#8217;s host-community agreement with <strong>Springfield<\/strong> forbids MGM from opening another casino within a 50-mile radius, putting most of Connecticut off-limits.
