Marco Rubio<\/strong> could be justthisclose to a Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> endorsement. When Rubio was in Las Vegas<\/strong> last week, playing counterpoint to Donald Trump<\/strong>, he had a meeting \"Sheldon<\/a>with Adelson that “had an air of importance” according to Politico.com<\/strong>. Should Adelson give Rubio the nod, it would put a tailwind of at least $100 million behind his campaign. Sons of immigrants, Adelson and Rubio are both frequent phone pals. Rubio has been courting other potential megadonors, like Paul Singer<\/strong> and Charles Schwab<\/strong>, but their war chests pale in comparison to what Adelson (net worth: $25.7 billion) could throw into the race.<\/p>\n

Although Adelson is officially neutral at this point, he appears to have tipped his hand through a story in his newspaper Haaretz<\/em>. Its headline unequivocally stated, “Sheldon Adelson Leaning Toward Marco Rubio.” It cited “sources close to Sheldon Adelson” (read: Sheldon Adelson) that “momentum has strongly shifted to the Florida<\/strong> senator’s favor.” Haaretz<\/em> was charmingly misinformed on one point, imagining that Wisconsin<\/strong> Gov. Scott Walker<\/strong> (R) was still in the race. (Rubio also picked up the endorsement of Pawn Stars<\/em>‘ Rick Harrison<\/strong> while in town.)<\/p>\n

According to a story in the Los Angeles Times<\/em>, Rubio is a former Las Vegan, the son of \"Sheldon_Adelson<\/a>casino workers who nevertheless shares Adelson’s anti-union views. He’s also fiercely anti-casino, having said\u00a0\u201cI have a long history of opposing expansion of gambling … [casinos] bring their problems with them.” Twice he has opposed casino expansion in Florida, calling it “fool’s gold” and citing Las Vegas’ economic woes as a cautionary economic example.<\/p>\n

Remarks like those have brought oblique pushback from American Gaming Associatio<\/strong>n<\/strong> President Geoff Freeman<\/strong>, who said,\u00a0\u201cIt sure would take a lot of chutzpah to go to Nevada<\/strong> to raise money and not take a lot of time to learn about the industry \u2014 or even malign it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the bottom line for Adelson is Israel<\/strong> and, when it comes to foreign policy, he and Rubio seem to be singing from the same hymnal. Expect a strategically timed endorsement, one giving Adelson sufficient runway\u00a0to bombard the airwaves ahead of the Nevada caucus. (To sweeten the pot for Sheldon, Rubio has co-sponsored a Senate bill to outlaw Internet<\/strong> gambling.)<\/p>\n

* Speaking of battlefronts, the Culinary Union<\/strong> is turning up the volume in its war against Deutsche Bank<\/strong>, minority owners of Station Casinos<\/strong>. “Nevada Needs Clean Gaming. Affiliates of Criminals Should Not Own Casinos,” growls an online ad that links to an open letter to Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval<\/strong> (R).
