How times change. On yesterday&#8217;s quarterly earnings call, <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/steve-wynn-45-years-experience-211659770.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wynn was apoplectic<\/a> about the Chinese government&#8217;s shifting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Wynn-on-Fox.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Wynn-on-Fox.jpg\" alt=\"Wynn on Fox\" width=\"290\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Wynn-on-Fox.jpg 290w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Wynn-on-Fox-150x93.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a>policies <em>in re<\/em> <strong>Macao<\/strong>.\u00a0&#8220;In my 45 years of experience, I&#8217;ve never seen anything like this before,&#8221; Wynn complained, expressing skepticism about the government&#8217;s promise of &#8220;supportive&#8221; &#8212; but undisclosed &#8212; new measures for the casino industry. Wynn&#8217;s dander was up, calling <strong>Peking<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0policy &#8220;ludicrous,&#8221; and his stock price down &#8212; dipping 7.5% over the course of the call, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/STEVE-WYNN-In-my-45-years-of-experience-Ive-never-seen-anything-like-this-before\/articleshow\/49396379.cms\" class=\"broken_link\">disclosed a 32% revenue decline<\/a> at <strong>Wynn Macau<\/strong> and <strong>Encore Macau<\/strong>. The company still managed to eke out a $74 million profit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wall Street<\/strong> analysts expected over $1 billion in earnings from <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> and it &#8216;only&#8217; delivered <!--more-->$996 million (down from last year&#8217;s $1.3 billion). <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong>&#8216;s reaction was, &#8220;A craps player once said, &#8216;nothing&#8217;s sweeter than a repeater&#8217;. That does not apply here.&#8221; Wynn would have been unamused by the observation, complaining that\u00a0&#8220;Almost half the business of VIP is gone and may be shrinking &#8230; it has caused us to review our credit policies and relationships with junket operators.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A particular sore point with Wynn is the Macao government&#8217;s unpredictable\u00a0approach to allocating table games. It only allotted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Studio-City.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Studio-City-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Studio City\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Studio-City.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Studio-City-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>150 to <strong>Galaxy Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s newest casino (designed for 400) but is expected to gift <strong>Studio City Macau<\/strong> with 250, in a display of favoritism toward <strong>Lawrence Ho<\/strong>. Even so, Wynn was sympathetic to his competitor, saying,\u00a0&#8220;The notion that someone who has spent $2.5 billion, and I&#8217;m talking about <strong>Melco<\/strong> [<strong>Crown Entertainment<\/strong>] now, doesn&#8217;t know how many tables they&#8217;re going to have &#8230; weeks before opening is preposterous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wynn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/wynn-levels-criticism-macau-table-game-allocation\" target=\"_blank\">is stymied himself<\/a> at $4.1 billion <strong>Wynn Palace<\/strong>, which was built to hold 500 table games &#8212; but the mogul doesn&#8217;t know how many dealers to hire or\u00a0train because he still has no visibility with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/wynn-palace-macau-image_large.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16588\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/wynn-palace-macau-image_large-300x212.png\" alt=\"wynn-palace-macau-image_large\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/wynn-palace-macau-image_large-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/wynn-palace-macau-image_large-150x106.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/wynn-palace-macau-image_large.png 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>regard to how many tables he&#8217;ll actually get. Referring to the non-casino attractions that represent seven-eights of Wynn Palace&#8217;s cost, Wynn raged,\u00a0&#8220;The reason these extraordinary non-gaming attractions exist is because the damn casino is the cash register.\u00a0The gaming allows the non-gaming to flourish, and that\u2019s the lesson we\u2019re trying to get to penetrate the leadership of Macao.&#8221; You have to wonder how such confrontational rhetoric will play over in China, where it&#8217;s custom to shade anything smacking of criticism with a heavy veil\u00a0of deference.<\/p>\n<p>The Macanese malaise is also infecting Wynn&#8217;s <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> business.\u00a0&#8220;Any drop in our earnings in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> is a result of a drop in our Asian baccarat business,&#8221; and indeed <a href=\"http:\/\/vegasinc.com\/news\/2015\/oct\/15\/wynn-frustrated-with-macau-revenue-drops-27-percen\/\" target=\"_blank\">casino revenues were down 15%<\/a>. \u201cSo if a segment of the international market is impacted &#8230; then we would be the principal victims, or we would suffer the most. That\u2019s exactly what happened.\u201d He added, &#8220;the problems in China are causing us to refocus our energies in <strong>America<\/strong>.&#8221; Ah, home sweet home.<\/p>\n<p>In other Wynn developments, he has lured former Southern Nevada water tsarina <strong>Pat Mulroy<\/strong> away from the <strong>Nevada Gaming Commission<\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2015\/oct\/15\/pat-mulroy-quits-nevada-gaming-commission-joins-wy\/?_ga=1.35419553.181002990.1421958548\" target=\"_blank\">onto the Wynn Resorts board<\/a>, making it co-ed again.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlife.com\/pages\/dec_15_changes.html?ecid=em_2015_10_mlife_tierexp&amp;cvosrc=email.aprimo.tierexp\" target=\"_blank\">is nibbling around the edges<\/a> of its customer-rewards programs, perhaps hoping to pare down its looming corporate debt load with niggling cutbacks here and there. For instance, if you&#8217;re playing the tables in Las Vegas, you won&#8217;t be able to earn Express Comps anymore. Platinum members of <strong>M life<\/strong> also will have to kiss the &#8220;Access to the Dedicated Concierge Phone Line&#8221; goodbye.
