{"id":17030,"date":"2015-10-20T09:17:57","date_gmt":"2015-10-20T17:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=17030"},"modified":"2020-02-26T06:57:25","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T14:57:25","slug":"macao-rebukes-wynn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/macao-rebukes-wynn\/","title":{"rendered":"Macao rebukes Wynn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong>&#8216;s criticism of <strong>Macao<\/strong> governmental policy toward casinos as \u201coutrageous and ridiculous &#8230;\u00a0the single most counterintuitive and irrational decision that was ever made\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-10-19\/macau-says-casinos-need-to-heed-its-rules-after-wynn-s-gripes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">went over like a lead balloon<\/a> in <strong>China<\/strong>. Casino executives, including <strong>Wynn Macau<\/strong> President <strong>Gamal Aziz<\/strong>, were called on the carpet. Present to read the riot act was<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Secretary for Economy &amp; Finance <strong>Leonel Alves<\/strong> (a former <strong>Sands China<\/strong> lobbyist). Following the meeting, the Macanese government indicated that it was going to stay the course whether casino owners like it or not, saying\u00a0\u201cclear understanding and full compliance.\u201d It politely added that it &#8220;regretted&#8221; any difference of opinion.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, Macao is showing the gaming barons who&#8217;s boss. Wynn&#8217;s remarks were certain to generate a backlash and his coevals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Wynn-Macau.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14939\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Wynn-Macau-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"Wynn-Macau\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Wynn-Macau-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Wynn-Macau-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Wynn-Macau.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>in the market may not appreciate getting caught in it. What&#8217;s more, Wynn may have blown his chances of getting anything close to the 500 tables he wants for <strong>Wynn Palace<\/strong>. We know that Wynn likes to vent: that&#8217;s part of the fascination of following <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>. But on this occasion, his penchant for hyperbole could have real-world, negative consequences.<\/p>\n<p>* The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> asks, how did DFS get so big? Well, in part because the major sporting leagues, hungry for sponsorships, acted as enablers to\u00a0<strong>DraftKings<\/strong> and <strong>FanDuel<\/strong>, especially the former. So there the <strong>NHL<\/strong>, <strong>MLB<\/strong> and <strong>MLS<\/strong> are, with their logos all over the Web wagering site. Other corporate entities only too eager to finance\u00a0the <strong>Internet<\/strong>-betting pools included <strong>Google Capital<\/strong>, <strong>Comcast<\/strong> and <strong>Time Warner<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-deals-that-made-daily-fantasy-take-off-1445043328?tesla=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">With an 11% stake in DraftKings<\/a>, <strong>Fox Networks<\/strong> could find the <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong> knocking at its door soon.\u00a0DFS&#8217; involvement with the networks wasn&#8217;t a one-way street: &#8220;research &#8230;\u00a0suggested daily fantasy would encourage players to watch more sports.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FanDuel eschewed DraftKings&#8217; advertising-for-investment tradeoff because\u00a0\u201cWe did not want to be in a place where we were committing to media over multiple years when we\u2019re seeing a dramatic shift,\u201d said FanDuel CEO <strong>Nigel Eccles<\/strong>. In other words, Eccles wanted to put more of his eggs in the digital-media basket. However, with the <strong>Justice Department<\/strong> and the <strong>FBI<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fbi-justice-department-investigating-daily-fantasy-sports-business-model-1444865627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rummaging through the DFS basket<\/a>, the damage may already be done. <strong>Walt Disney Co<\/strong>. is looking pretty smart right now for scuttling a DraftKings investment at the eleventh hour. <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> is about the only major market where DFS isn&#8217;t in a world of hurt, with Attorney General <strong>Maura Healey<\/strong> merely &#8220;in talks with both companies over putting in place proper consumer protections.&#8221; Meanwhile, DraftKings CEO <strong>Jason Robins<\/strong> told <strong>Fox Business<\/strong> he is &#8220;open to increased regulation of the industry.&#8221; That&#8217;s a big step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/japan-casino-bill-likely-out-for-2015-union-gaming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No casino legalization<\/a> in <strong>Japan<\/strong> this year.
