We need to address cost drivers like our pension system. <em>We need to look at gaming options<\/em>.\u201d [emphasis added] And by &#8220;gaming options,&#8221; Reed means Internet gambling, OTB slot parlors and airport slots. The House rejected Gov. <strong>Tom Wolf<\/strong>&#8216;s $2.4 billion tax increase like a hanging curve ball, putting &#8220;gaming options&#8221; onto the front burner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore we look at increasing taxes on working families, we have a responsibility to look at every other possible revenue source out there, and expanded gaming is <!--more-->certainly one of those possibilities,\u201d Reed told a <strong>Pittsburgh<\/strong> radio station. Not only does the (undoubtedly rosy) projection of $307 million in annual <strong>Internet<\/strong> gaming revenues sound tempting, there&#8217;s a hint of desperation to find new gambling-money sources now that Pennsylvania casinos have passed the saturation point. The deal breaker could be tax rates, with the House bill favoring 15% for i-gaming while the state Senate version demands a usurious 54% levy.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>&#8216;s proposed &#8220;study&#8221; (read: <em>de facto<\/em> ban) on online gambling is evidently encountering the same indifference in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Sheldon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3744\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Sheldon.png\" alt=\"Sheldon\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Sheldon.png 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Sheldon-150x99.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Congress as his bill to ban Internet gaming outright. The &#8220;study&#8221; would freeze Web betting in all but those states that already have it: <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>, <strong>Delaware<\/strong> and <strong>Nevada<\/strong>. The executive director of the <strong>Poker Players Alliance<\/strong>, <strong>John Pappas<\/strong>, fairly took the words right out of my mouth:\u00a0\u201cAn Internet gambling moratorium is nothing more than prohibition in sheep\u2019s clothing.\u00a0They can\u2019t get <strong>RAWA<\/strong> through the front door so they are trying to squeeze it through the back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, quite a few prestigious bodies are lining up against Adelson, from the <strong>Fraternal Order of Police<\/strong> to the <strong>National Governors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Sands-CEO-Sheldon-Adelson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10417\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Sands-CEO-Sheldon-Adelson.jpg\" alt=\"Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson\" width=\"100\" height=\"67\" \/><\/a>Association<\/strong>, among others. Law enforcement officials are said to be particularly concerned, as illegal Internet wagering would continue to flourish while Congress &#8220;studies&#8221; the alleged problem of &#8216;Net betting. It&#8217;s nice to see that, despite Adelson&#8217;s efforts to the contrary, our democratic process is not for sale.<\/p>\n<p>* We don&#8217;t know what sexual acts are illegal in <strong>Idaho<\/strong> but a piquant state law forbids the imitation of\u00a0&#8220;any sexual acts which are prohibited by law.&#8221; Evidently\u00a0<strong>Coeur d&#8217;Alene Casino Resort Hotel<\/strong> didn&#8217;t get the memo, because guest show <em>Hunks<\/em> busted out some of the forbidden moves. As a consequence, Coeur d&#8217;Alene <a href=\"http:\/\/magicvalley.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/coeur-d-alene-casino-liquor-license-suspended\/article_ac0b9938-8d9e-52d5-86b6-61ad34015c70.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will have its liquor privileges suspended for 10 days<\/a> by the <strong>Idaho Liquor Control Board<\/strong>. The real losers here are the casino players, who won&#8217;t be able to get a buzz on while gambling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s nothing like a budget crisis and a partial government shutdown to focus lawmakers&#8217; minds on gaming expansion.
