It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Penn logo\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo.jpg 274w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/a>paid out $109 million in rent to <strong>Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties Inc<\/strong>. Penn announced that $266 million <strong>Plainridge Park<\/strong>, in <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>, and its two newest racinos in <strong>Ohio<\/strong> were all pulling in a 20% return on investment. At the former, Penn has signed up 130,000 members already for its loyalty program. &#8220;We think this should assuage investors\u2019 recent concerns about a moderating recent revenue performance at Plainridge,&#8221; wrote <strong>J.P. Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> of the slot parlor&#8217;s performance.<\/p>\n<p>Out West, Penn is focused on <a href=\"http:\/\/businesspress.vegas\/8th-annual-green-awards\/penn-national-planning-better-restaurant-offerings-tropicana\" target=\"_blank\">improving the restaurant options<\/a>\u00a0and slot product at the <strong>Tropicana Las Vegas<\/strong>, while construction of <!--more-->the $390 million <strong>Hollywood Casino<\/strong> for <strong>Jamul Indian Village<\/strong> remains on schedule. When complete, it will be one of the closest tribal casinos to downtown <strong>San Diego<\/strong>, a real feather in Penn&#8217;s cap. However, until the financial performance of the Trop can be improved, it will remain a drag on Penn&#8217;s western division. The company also reported growth in market share in <strong>Joliet<\/strong>, <strong>Kansas City<\/strong> and <strong>St. Louis<\/strong>. &#8220;Additionally, spend per visit grew across all segments, while visitation remains mixed,&#8221; better at the high end, wrote Greff.<\/p>\n<p>In an amusing sidelight, Penn admitted that Sundays are slow at Plainridge Park, due to high attendance at <strong>New England Patriots<\/strong> games. The company has replaced the management team at the Trop and figures to have <strong>Marquee Rewards<\/strong> in place by spring, just in time to capitalize on the <strong>MGM\/AEG Arena<\/strong>. Management put their Trop purchase price at 10X cash flow and expects performance to warrant that multiple within three years.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Pat Mulroy<\/strong> has been a naughty girl. The <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> rummaged through <strong>Nevada Gaming Commission<\/strong> minutes and found that Mulroy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/mulroy-voted-wynn-matter-joining-the-companys-board\" target=\"_blank\">had voted favorably on consent items<\/a> involving <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> two months before joining the company&#8217;s board. Rapidly backpedaling, Mulroy attorney <strong>Peter Bernhard<\/strong> told <strong>Howard Stutz<\/strong> that &#8220;It was the cleaning up of some language without any examination by the commission.&#8221; Joining the protect-Pat movement, <strong>Ethics Commission<\/strong> Executive Director <strong>Yvonne M. Nevarez-Goodson<\/strong> wrote that Mulroy &#8220;did not obtain proprietary information of Wynn Resorts&#8217; competitors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If the Ethics Commission looks bad for waiving the standard one-year cooling-off period for state officials from joining an industry they regulating, Stutz&#8217;s discoveries only worsen the picture. As it stands, Mulroy&#8217;s remit on the Wynn board is so limited as to be comical. The former <strong>Southern Nevada Water Authority<\/strong> oligarch is said to be there only to provide &#8220;her expertise on water issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Lawrence Ho<\/strong> said he would be &#8220;very concerned&#8221; if <strong>Studio City Macau<\/strong> got less than its maximum of 400 tables. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-10-20\/macau-allocates-250-gaming-tables-to-melco-crown-s-studio-city\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Well, he can start worrying<\/a>. The Macao government has awarded him 200 tables to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"Lawrence_Ho_Melco\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>start, with another 50 coming in January. If that sounds bad, Ho is enjoying &#8216;favorite son&#8217; treatment compared to <strong>Galaxy Entertainment<\/strong>, which only received 150 tables for its most recent casino.\u00a0&#8220;Two hundred and fifty tables is a big allocation. No one should have been expecting 400,&#8221; analyst <strong>Tim Craighead<\/strong> told <em>Bloomberg Business<\/em>. (Certainly not <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong> after his recent tirade against the Macanese government.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudio City checked all the right boxes in terms of all the non-gaming amenities that the government is looking for,\u201d said <strong>Union Gaming<\/strong> analyst <strong>Grant Govertson<\/strong>, who told <strong>Melco Crown Entertainment<\/strong> to look on the bright side: It got more tables than anyone was expecting. Ho&#8217;s umbrage can be attributed to loan covenants he agreed to which required Studio City to obtain the full 400 tables by next Oct. 1.
