Seems that the place really was not for sale, although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ruffin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ruffin.jpg\" alt=\"ruffin\" width=\"115\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><strong>Phil Ruffin<\/strong> wished it was, to the tune of $1.3 billion. And, as badly as <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> could use the cash to deleverage, CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> nixed Ruffin&#8217;s offer. It&#8217;s not the first time Murren\u00a0has indicated it would take some super-lucrative offer (to the tune of 15X cash flow or so) to make him part ways with <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong>&#8216;s precedent-shattering megaresort.<\/p>\n<p>The deal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/treasure-island-owner-says-mgm-resorts-rejected-13b-offer-mirage\" target=\"_blank\">would have made a lot of sense for Ruffin<\/a>, whose <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong> is umbilically connected to The Mirage and could use the <!--more-->elbow room the latter&#8217;s 65 acres affords. On the upside, Ruffin says he&#8217;s almost broken even on <strong>Trump International<\/strong>, the condo tower being only $12 million in the hole at this point. Ruffin was being a veritable Chatty Cathy, also revealing that he&#8217;s the mystery buyer of <strong>Gary Primm<\/strong>&#8216;s vast suburban estate, next door to his own. His plans for the sprawling compound are still up in the air, with a children&#8217;s park one option under consideration.\u00a0&#8220;Somebody wanted to buy it and put houses on it,&#8221; he told <strong>Howard Stutz<\/strong>. &#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t allow that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* The <em>Motley Fool<\/em>&#8216;s <strong>Travis Hoium<\/strong> looks at MGM&#8217;s REIT conversion and sees trouble: &#8220;Long-term, I think this new structure is only going to complicate the company&#8217;s business and create strain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/MGM-Macau-casino-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14787\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/MGM-Macau-casino-4-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"MGM-Macau-casino-4\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/MGM-Macau-casino-4-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/MGM-Macau-casino-4-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/MGM-Macau-casino-4.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>when it wants to invest in new resorts &#8230;\u00a0then MGM Resorts may wish it had stayed a single company that can do what it wants without negotiating with this new third party, which owns its buildings.&#8221; He also thinks it&#8217;s odd that a company with low tax billings &#8212; $835,000 in 2013 &#8212; would opt for a REIT, whose appeal is its tax-exempt status. MGM might be on the hook for a lot more but it keeps its <strong>MGM Macau<\/strong> profits stashed overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Hoium opines that MGM may be seeking investors looking for a stable, long-term play. But he also notes that <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> parent REIT <strong>Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/general\/2015\/11\/09\/mgm-reit-right-move-or-smoke-and-mirrors.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">has been a dud as a publicly traded stock<\/a>. Also, by spinning off most of the real estate to <strong>MGM Growth Partners<\/strong>, MGM proper will have little collateral against which to finance future projects. It better borrow the money for that desired <strong>Atlanta<\/strong> megaresort now, regardless of whether MGM gets it or not.<\/p>\n<p>* Troubles keep piling up for daily fantasy sports. Now Sen. <strong>Robert Menendez<\/strong> (D) and Rep. <strong>Frank Pallone<\/strong> (D, <em>below<\/em>) are calling for the <strong>Federal Trade Commission<\/strong> to look into the industry, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/news\/menendez-pallone-urge-ftc-to-investigate-daily-fantasy-sports-1.1452412\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">which has already asserted the authority to do so<\/a>. A media report summarized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pallone.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pallone-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"pallone\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pallone-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pallone-101x150.jpg 101w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pallone.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a>the two lawmakers as deeming the FTC &#8220;the ideal agency to issue regulations to protect data security, prohibit deceptive advertising practices, and to establish compulsive gambling safeguards related to the industry.&#8221; (The <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> state assembly is also getting into the regulate-DFS act.) The Garden State is an especially thorny thicket for DFS, because its major-league patrons are suing to prevent Jersey citizens from betting on sports &#8212; at the same time that it&#8217;s egging them on to put money on DFS.<\/p>\n<p>(Half a world away, sports betting is seen as the cure to Macao&#8217;s gambling woes. Problem is, there are no operators except <strong>Macau Slot<\/strong>, which is as debilitated as owner <strong>Stanley Ho<\/strong>. Compared to <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong>&#8216;s robust soccer-betting industry, Macao&#8217;s pallor is blamed on a lack of investment &#8230; and with new table games at a high premium, there&#8217;s plenty of floor space for sports books.)<\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s one thing DFS can be sure of, it&#8217;s that Pallone isn&#8217;t going away.\u00a0\u201cThe legal ambiguity surrounding the industry and its relationship with professional sports makes this issue ripe for Congressional review,\u201d he remarked ominously.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So now we know where those The Mirage-is-for-sale rumors were coming from.
