(Only <strong>Fontainebleau<\/strong> on the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> can hope to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Baha-Mar.jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10877\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Baha-Mar.jpg-282x300.jpg\" alt=\"BahaMar_Vert_TM_RENDERED GOLD_4C\" width=\"282\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Baha-Mar.jpg-282x300.jpg 282w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Baha-Mar.jpg-141x150.jpg 141w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Baha-Mar.jpg-965x1024.jpg 965w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Baha-Mar.jpg.jpg 1677w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/><\/a>compare and it has just one hotel to Baha Mar&#8217;s four.) It&#8217;s a debacle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-01-04\/the-ghosts-of-baha-mar-how-a-3-5-billion-paradise-went-bust?cmpid=BBD010416_BIZ\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">10 years in the making<\/a> and could jeopardize the credit rating of the <strong>Bahamas<\/strong>, for whom it was supposed to generate 12% of the nation&#8217;s GDP. In a moment of prescience, the-CEO of <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> pulled his company out of Baha Mar early. Whether he saw the trouble that was coming is anybody&#8217;s guess but he&#8217;s earned the right to say &#8220;told you so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Local tycoon\u00a0<strong>Sarkis Izmirlian<\/strong> envisioned Baha Mar as a $900 million project. But his partners got cold feet early in the Great Recession, forcing Izmirlian to make a Faustian pact.\u00a0<!--more--><strong>China State Construction\u00a0Engineering Corp<\/strong>. offered to finish the job and the\u00a0<strong>Export-Import Bank of China<\/strong> (Exim) provided liquidity &#8212; on the condition that the work would be done by imported Chinese laborers and China State Construction could never be terminated, no matter what.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>Bloomberg News<\/em>, &#8220;Endless haggling complicated by language barriers ensued &#8212; about payments, invoices, workmanship, on and on. Deadlines were set and promptly broken. Emails flew back and forth to <strong>Beijing<\/strong>.&#8221; Faulty construction dogged Baha Mar. Izmirlian hired 2,070 hotel workers (at a cost of $4 million a month), while secretly plotting to file bankruptcy in <strong>Delaware<\/strong>. The latter&#8217;s courts kicked the matter back to the Bahamas, where Izmirlian saw his initial investment evaporate as liquidators took over Baha Mar. Exim is hunting for a new operator, possibly <strong>Fosum Group<\/strong>, which also owns a piece of <strong>Cirque du Soleil<\/strong>, among other global investments.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, there&#8217;s a moral in this for operators of casinos in <strong>Macao<\/strong>, should any of their competitors be nationalized. <strong>Center for a Secure Free Society<\/strong> boffin <strong>Frank Menendez<\/strong> says,\u00a0\u201cState-owned enterprises don\u2019t function as competitive entities.\u00a0They\u2019re protected from failure.\u201d In other words, China State Construction may have created a white elephant in the Bahamas but it&#8217;s going to get off scot-free.<\/p>\n<p>* Online sports betting just got a little more difficult in <strong>Canada<\/strong>. Leading Internet gambling provider <strong>Betfair<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casinoaffiliateprograms.com\/blog\/betfair-exits-canadian-market\/\" target=\"_blank\">is shutting down access<\/a> to Canadian punters. This action is attributable to two things. One, sports betting is illegal in the Great White North (although this hadn&#8217;t stopped Betfair before) and, secondly, Betfair is merging with <strong>Paddy Power<\/strong> and probably wants to clean up its act.
