The brightest spot was <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Grand Victoria <\/strong>(pictured),\u00a0up 6% on a gross of $15 million. Other gainers were <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Rivers Casino<\/strong>, up 2% on $36 million, <strong>Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Casino Queen<\/strong> (+3%, $9 million) and <strong>Jumer&#8217;s Casino Rock Island<\/strong> (+1%, $6 million).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> took a battering, with <strong>Argosy Belle<\/strong> in a disastrous, 23% spiral ($3.5 million), while <!--more--><strong>Empress Joliet<\/strong> declined 9% ($9 million) and <strong>Hollywood Aurora<\/strong> slipped 3.5% ($10 million). <strong>Empress Joliet<\/strong>&#8216;s loss was not <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Joliet<\/strong>&#8216;s gain, as the casino dove 14% ($15 million) and <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> didn&#8217;t make any of it back\u00a0down at <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Metropolis<\/strong>, off 3% ($7 million). <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> wasn&#8217;t exempt from the bad news, down 10% at <strong>Par-A-Dice<\/strong>, with a gross of $7 million.<\/p>\n<p>* If you count free play as revenue, casinos in <strong>Indiana<\/strong> were up 3% last month, despite 7% less patronage. Players bet more liberally, up 11%. Leading the pack, percentage-wise, was improbable <strong>French Lick Resort<\/strong>, (<em>right<\/em>) up 15% ($7 million). With the exception of <strong>Hollywood Casino <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/French-Lick.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/French-Lick-300x110.jpg\" alt=\"French Lick\" width=\"300\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/French-Lick-300x110.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/French-Lick-150x55.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/French-Lick.jpg 371w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Lawrenceburg<\/strong> (-6% on $15 million), southern Indiana casinos seem to have shaken off the effects of competition in southern <strong>Ohio<\/strong>. This includes <strong>Pinnacle Enterainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Belterra<\/strong> (flat, $9 million) and <strong>Full House Resorts<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Rising Sun<\/strong> (+16%, $4.5 million). Elsewhere along the <strong>Ohio River<\/strong>, Caesars&#8217; <strong>Horseshoe Southern Indiana<\/strong> was flat but good for $22 million, while <strong>Tropicana Evansville<\/strong> rose 5% on $11 million in revenue. The racinos also held their own. <strong>Hoosier Park<\/strong> was flat, on a $15 million gross, and <strong>Indiana Downs<\/strong> booked $19 million, a 5% upswing.<\/p>\n<p>In the northern tier, <strong>Ameristar East Chicago<\/strong> led the market with a 9.5% gain ($21 million), while Horseshoe Hammond was unruffled\u00a0with a gross $36 million, a 2% step up. Over in <strong>Michigan City<\/strong>, Boyd&#8217;s <strong>Blue Chip<\/strong> gained 4% for a $14 million. <strong>Majestic Star II<\/strong> was flat ($5 million) but its sister ship had a 2% lift, grossing 2%. One wonders how much better Hoosier State casinos might fare if they shifted to land-based formats but, with the exception of <strong>Tropicana Entertainment<\/strong>, nobody has taken that bit between their teeth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While surrounding states prosper at their casinos, Illinois&#8216; continue to suffer, especially now that they must compete with slot routes.
