The tribal supercasino&#8217;s attempts to get out from under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norwichbulletin.com\/news\/x1767499563\/Deal-threatens-Mohegan-Sun-debt-payment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">an onerous fee arrangement<\/a> with <strong>Sol Kerzner<\/strong> and <strong>Len Wolman<\/strong> are not only facing heavy weather, Mohegan Sun is also coming up short on its debt-servicing requirements. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theday.com\/article\/20100103\/NWS01\/301039942\/-1\/NWS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">A thinning revenue stream<\/a> doesn&#8217;t portend well, either.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We like this guy<\/strong>. As you know, <em>S&amp;G<\/em> tries to avoid endorsing specific political candidates. But it&#8217;s hard to resist someone who describes the State of <strong>Alabama<\/strong>&#8216;s current <em>jihad<\/em> against electronic bingo as &#8220;<em>an almost maniacal tilting at windmills<\/em>.&#8221; That&#8217;d be <strong>Bill Johnson<\/strong> (R), who has clearly given careful scrutiny to the issue<a href=\"http:\/\/www.montgomeryadvertiser.com\/article\/20100104\/OPINION0101\/1030309\/1006\/OPINION\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though he scarcely sounds like a casino proponent, Johnson suggests untying the Gordian Knot of Alabamian e-bingo by putting it to a statewide vote. He defines the issue as, &#8220;<em>whether we should regulate and tax the gaming that&#8217;s already here<\/em>.&#8221; While one might not agree with every component in Johnson&#8217;s proposed package of regulations (daily loss limits, for instance), by and large it&#8217;s both judicious and a big stride in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1762\" title=\"WP Weidner\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/WP-Weidner.jpeg\" alt=\"WP Weidner\" width=\"250\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/WP-Weidner.jpeg 250w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/WP-Weidner-150x97.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Weidner everywhere<\/strong>. The former <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> mouthpiece (<em>left<\/em>) and current <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> scapegoat is being floated as a possible successor to <strong>Dan Lee<\/strong> at <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>. But if Lee was a loose cannon, Weidner is an out-of-control Sherman tank.<\/p>\n<p><em>S&amp;G<\/em> confines itself to one prediction, contingent upon <strong>Carl Icahn<\/strong> gaining ownership of insolvent <strong>Fontainebleau<\/strong>. We figure Icahn has sussed out the immediate competition and will finish F-bleau in stages, repositioning it as a resort for the $30-$49\/night crowd. That&#8217;d write <em>finis<\/em> to the <strong>Sahara<\/strong> and <strong>Riviera<\/strong>, and could kneecap <strong>Circus Circus<\/strong> in the bargain. Just a surmise, based on Icahn&#8217;s history as a Vegas operator.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1763\" title=\"C-Center\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/C-Center.jpg\" alt=\"C-Center\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/C-Center.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/C-Center-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/C-Center-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>He&#8217;s a believer<\/strong>. While many are skittish about <strong>CityCenter<\/strong>&#8216;s impact, <strong>T. Rowe Price<\/strong> Porfolio Manager <strong>Joe Fath<\/strong> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2010\/jan\/04\/eastern-giant-has-faith-mgm-mirage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placed a $277 million bet<\/a> on <strong>MGM Mirage<\/strong>&#8216;s prospects for success. He points to a slew of macroeconomic indicators that tell him Americans are ready to spend more and (in an echo of remarks made by Adelson) are willing to pay for luxury &#8212; or a fair approximation thereof. Fath also bucks conventional wisdom by saying now is the time to increase ADRs (although the market itself will be the ultimate arbiter of that).<\/p>\n<p>What gives Fath particular credibility is that he was a skeptic regarding both the <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> and <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Entertainment<\/strong> LBOs, two spectacular busts. As he points out, unlike those two companies, MGM actually had something to show for its $8.5 billion leap of faith that was CityCenter. Harrah&#8217;s and Station have &#8230; debt and lots of it. While Las Vegas Sands hasn&#8217;t gone bankrupt, per Fath&#8217;s prediction, it&#8217;s far from out of the woods.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1764\" title=\"Dubai 1990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Dubai-1990.jpg\" alt=\"Dubai 1990\" width=\"470\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Dubai-1990.jpg 470w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Dubai-1990-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Dubai-1990-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Where are we? The Vegas Strip in 1975 or Dubai <\/em>circa<em> 1990?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Donning my <em>CityLife<\/em> fedora<\/strong>, I look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegascitylife.com\/articles\/2009\/12\/24\/opinion\/guest\/iq_33202644.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the fatal attraction between<\/a> <strong>Dubai<\/strong> and <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, two enclaves of &#8220;growth pays for itself&#8221; thinking with more in common than a dearth of water. I also catch up with <strong>FAYM<\/strong> founder <strong>Hal Weller<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegascitylife.com\/articles\/2009\/12\/24\/news\/local_news\/iq_33170588.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of a slew of individuals and and groups<\/a> that are making Vegas a better place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best of the year<\/strong>. None of them played the Strip, I regret to say, but here are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegascitylife.com\/articles\/2009\/12\/31\/ae\/stage\/iq_33317960.txt\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">the 10 best Vegas shows of 2009<\/a>. With three &#8220;bests,&#8221; it was a banner year for <strong>Las Vegas Little Theatre<\/strong>, just a few blocks from <strong>Venelazzo<\/strong> and just around the corner from <em>LVA<\/em> HQ.
