{"id":17626,"date":"2016-01-25T13:21:55","date_gmt":"2016-01-25T21:21:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=17626"},"modified":"2016-01-25T13:21:55","modified_gmt":"2016-01-25T21:21:55","slug":"case-bets-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/case-bets-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Case Bets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Casinos: They&#8217;re not just for French resorts anymore. <strong>Marseille<\/strong> Mayor <strong>Jean-Claude Gaudin<\/strong> is plumping for a casino in his city, which is badly afflicted by poverty. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-france-casinos-idUSKCN0V025F\" target=\"_blank\">He seems to be right on the curve<\/a>, as far as a casino injection goes. Last year, the French casino industry&#8217;s revenues grew 2%, to $2.4 billion. To put the importance of provincial casinos in perspective, <strong>Deauville<\/strong> derives 30% of its tax base in gambling. The idea of bringing gambling to major French cities may catch on but probably not in <!--more--><strong>Paris<\/strong>, where casinos have been illegal for 109 years. There, the gaming industry is expected to lobby for more private gambling salons, enlarging upon the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>* A bill to legalize <strong>Internet<\/strong> poker in <strong>New York<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/new-york-online-poker-bill-reintroduced-by-state-assemblyman-gary-pretlow\" target=\"_blank\">has crept quietly back<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Pretlow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Pretlow-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pretlow\" width=\"156\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Pretlow-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Pretlow-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Pretlow.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 156px) 100vw, 156px\" \/><\/a>into the legislative hopper, thanks to diehard supporter Assemblyman <strong>Gary Pretlow<\/strong> (D). However, Pretlow has picked a devil of a time to revisit the online-gaming issue. Lawmakers will have their eyes on Attorney General <strong>Eric Schneiderman<\/strong>&#8216;s ongoing crusade to shut down and penalize daily fantasy sports. And for some lawmakers, legalizing and taxing DFS will be a much higher priority than i-poker, the revenues of which are peanuts by comparison. We Pretlow luck, as he&#8217;s clearly going to need it.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Tilman Fertitta<\/strong> isn&#8217;t going to be happy about this. A <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> judge has ruled against <strong>Golden Nugget Biloxi<\/strong>, which was seeking a lower lease rate from the city. Since the Nugget had been paying the higher assessment &#8220;under protest,&#8221; <strong>Biloxi<\/strong> is spared having to make any reparations to Fertitta. However, Golden Nugget attorney <strong>Britt Singletary<\/strong> said,&#8221;We respect the judge and his decision, but feel he is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/goldennuggetbiloxi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8571\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/goldennuggetbiloxi-300x106.jpg\" alt=\"goldennuggetbiloxi\" width=\"300\" height=\"106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/goldennuggetbiloxi-300x106.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/goldennuggetbiloxi-150x53.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/goldennuggetbiloxi.jpg 475w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>incorrect in this matter and will advise our client to appeal.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunherald.com\/news\/business\/casino-gambling\/article56045195.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Fertitta seeks to pay a half-million less per year<\/a>, backdated to 2009, on the grounds that economic conditions and new competition should be reflected in a reduced lease. At present, the Nugget would qualify for the tax reduction if market revenues fell below $1.25 billion <em>and<\/em> Nugget ones went south of $90 million as well. The former has happened, the latter has not. It&#8217;s too successful for its own good.<\/p>\n<p>Responding that people are free to enter into unfavorable contracts,\u00a0<strong>Harrison County<\/strong> Circuit Judge <strong>Roger Clark<\/strong> was unmoved. He ruled that the intent of the parties (Biloxi and, originally, <strong>Isle of Capri Casinos<\/strong>) when they entered the lease was irrelevant. What matters is what they put on paper, &#8220;for the language employed in the contract is the surest guide to what was intended.&#8221;\u00a0In the meantime, <strong>CNBC<\/strong> had better have the &#8220;bleep&#8221; button ready for Fertitta&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/opinion\/columns-blogs\/inside-gaming\/reality-tv-might-be-perfect-outlet-tilman-fertittas-oversized\" target=\"_blank\">new TV series<\/a>.
