Trop antes up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> gaming revenues were up 8% last month but <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong> is calling that headline &#8220;misleading,&#8221; the increase &#8220;purely optical.&#8221; Volume of table play was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"MIrage\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MIrage.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>down 11% and slot coin-in was 2% less. But increased hold, rule changes and luck conspired in the casinos&#8217; favor. By contrast, a 4% increase in slot play in the <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> locals market couldn&#8217;t stave off a 5% revenue slippage. The state of <strong>Nevada<\/strong> as a whole was up 3%. Strip slot revenue rose 7% and baccarat winnings shot up 20% despite 11% less volume of play. Other table revenues were flat on 11% less in wagers.<\/p>\n<p>Both the <strong>Boulder Strip<\/strong> and <strong>Laughlin<\/strong> had a bad time of it, down 15% and 14% respectively. <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong> was off 7% but <strong>Downtown<\/strong> eked out a <!--more-->1% increase. <strong>Reno<\/strong> was flat but the snowbunnies lost money hand over fist at <strong>Lake Tahoe<\/strong>, where casino win was up 13%. January will be a tricky month to account for, too, as it will include the New Year&#8217;s Eve weekend but &#8212; ending as it did during a weekend &#8212; will be without its last three days&#8217; worth of slot revenues, which will roll over into February.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Borgata<\/strong> isn&#8217;t the only <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> casino making a major capital reinvestment these days. The <strong>Tropicana<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/business\/20160128_ap_cadb2979cdd749a78b6e99a31f0fa6e8.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">has announced a raft of changes<\/a> than range from increasing the repertory of light shows it displays during the summer to renovating 500 <strong>Havana Tower<\/strong> rooms. High-limit slots will get their own area and the south-tower casino floor will be redone.\u00a0&#8220;These renovations are not only attractive upgrades for Tropicana&#8217;s guests, they are creating new employment opportunities at a crucial time in Atlantic City,&#8221; said President <strong>Anthony Rodio<\/strong>, one of the Atlantic City \u00a0casino executives who definitely gets it. Perhaps that is why the Trop has risen to the #3 spot in the A.C. market.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> executives were sending mixed messages about the future of <strong>Macao<\/strong> yesterday. COO <strong>Rob Goldstein<\/strong> said the junket <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein.jpg\" alt=\"Goldstein\" width=\"148\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein.jpg 148w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein-111x150.jpg 111w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" \/><\/a>industry &#8212; which has already shrunk 23% &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/more-junkets-to-close-survivors-will-be-in-shape-lvs-exec\" target=\"_blank\">will contract even further<\/a> in 2016.\u00a0\u201cThe ones that are still standing \u2013 and we met with some of the top people there last week \u2026 actually they\u2019re in pretty good shape and there is sufficient liquidity,\u201d he added. That same day, <strong>Union Gaming Securities<\/strong> analyst <strong>Grant Govertsen<\/strong> said\u00a0the defunct junketeers &#8220;were on life support in 2015,&#8221; so it wouldn&#8217;t worsen his forecast for 2016.<\/p>\n<p>However, given the rather bleak picture <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> analysts have been painting of the year to come, CEO <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/macaudailytimes.com.mo\/adelson-market-stabilizing-after-sands-china-profit-falls-19pct.html\" target=\"_blank\">depicted a far rosier one<\/a>, saying Sands was &#8220;bottoming out&#8221; in mass-market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sheldon-Adelson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16006\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sheldon-Adelson-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"Sheldon-Adelson\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sheldon-Adelson-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sheldon-Adelson-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sheldon-Adelson.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>play.\u00a0\u201cSome of the numbers put out and experienced through December and January indicate to me that that\u2019s the case.\u201d The glass-half-full case was supported by the fact that December&#8217;s 21% decline was the smallest since a year ago. Praising <strong>Sands China<\/strong>&#8216;s ability to beat <strong>Wall Street<\/strong>&#8216;s consensus, Deutsche Bank analyst <strong>Karen Tang<\/strong> wrote,\u00a0\u201cWe expect\u00a0Macau\u00a0stocks to see a six to eight week short-term bounce into the seasonally strong Chinese New Year, and our top pick is Sands China.\u201d With $2.7 billion <strong>Parisian<\/strong> coming down the pike, Adelson needs his predictions to come true.<\/p>\n<p>* Now that <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> lawmakers are flirting seriously with online gambling, Keystone State casinos (but not <strong>Sands Bethlehem<\/strong>) are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspoker.com\/blog\/penn-national-adds-social-casino\/13369\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">experimenting with social gaming<\/a>.
