{"id":18425,"date":"2016-06-21T12:42:03","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T20:42:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=18425"},"modified":"2016-06-21T12:42:03","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T20:42:03","slug":"doing-it-the-right-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/doing-it-the-right-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Doing it the right way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In keeping with the aphorism that history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce, <strong>Glenn Straub<\/strong>&#8216;s fire-aim-ready attempt to reopen <strong>Revel<\/strong> continues to drag on, providing <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tropicana_havana.jpg\" alt=\"tropicana_havana\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tropicana_havana.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tropicana_havana-150x117.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>an object lesson in how <em>not<\/em> to open a casino. As though to shame Straub by example, the <strong>Tropicana<\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/million-renovation-at-tropicana-complete\/article_ba2d5f38-36f3-11e6-ab2e-038075418785.html\" target=\"_blank\">officially debuting $40 million worth<\/a> of upgrades. <em>The Press of Atlantic City<\/em> enumerates these as &#8220;redesigned <strong>Havana Tower<\/strong> hotel rooms, a new high-limit slot area, the addition of a property entrance on Pacific Ave, a <strong>Luxe Hair Salon<\/strong>, a <strong>Corner Market<\/strong>, <strong>Ivan Kane\u2019s Kiss Kiss a Go-Go<\/strong>, a <strong>Trop Advantage Rewards Center<\/strong> and five all-new multimedia light and sound shows on the Boardwalk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Owner <strong>Carl Icahn<\/strong> and CEO <strong>Anthony Rodio<\/strong> are doubling down on last year&#8217;s $50 makeover, refusing to rest on their laurels &#8212; which may be why <!--more-->the Trop is regarded as one of the casino least likely to close if competition opens up in north <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>. Instead of taking business advice from <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> (who at least knew how to <em>open<\/em> a casino &#8212; even if what followed was invariably devil take the hindmost), stroll down to the Trop and see how the pros do it. If he chats up Kane, he&#8217;d better pack some earplugs: The nightlife impresario has clearly spent too much time in nightclubs and converses in a mild bellow.<\/p>\n<p>* In a move you&#8217;d never see from the <strong>Culinary Union<\/strong>, a pair of <strong>Macao<\/strong> labor associations &#8212; it would be a stretch to call them &#8220;unions&#8221; &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/macau-labour-groups-back-gambling-ban-for-casino-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\">are voicing their support<\/a> for a <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Macao-dealer-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Macao dealer\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Macao-dealer-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Macao-dealer-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Macao-dealer.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>proposed ban of casino employees from gaming floors when they are not working.\u00a0\u201cWe have witnessed\u00a0many cases of\u00a0dealers that\u00a0entered a\u00a0cycle of accumulating\u00a0big gaming debt, \u00a0borrowing heavily to gamble and losing all the money,\u201d said <strong>Power of the Macao Gaming Association<\/strong> Director <strong>Lei Iok Po<\/strong>, a pit boss by profession.\u00a0\u201cCasino dealers are\u00a0much more prone to this condition because they are very exposed to casino table gambling; many of them believe they can\u00a0win just as their clients do, but later they eventually turn into problem gamblers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Implementing such a policy would require a change in Macanese law. At present, casino patrons don&#8217;t have to produce I.D. when entering a casino and it&#8217;s hard to wrap one&#8217;s head around the idea in a less authoritarian society. The closest American equivalent I can think of is <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>&#8216;s ban on casino executives gambling at rival properties. One can certainly imagine the untoward pressures that might ensue if, say, a <strong>Borgata<\/strong> executive got himself heavily at a competing casino.\u00a0Macao&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gaming Inspection &amp;\u00a0Coordination Bureau<\/strong> is taking a study-and-see stance on the suggested\u00a0ban. And, in another instance of <strong>Stanley Ho<\/strong>&#8216;s fading power, his license to run the city&#8217;s canidrome is up for an uncertain renewal. You might say old Stanley is going to the dogs.<\/p>\n<p>* Assemblyman <strong>Gary Pretlow<\/strong> (D) having <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspoker.com\/blog\/ny-online-poker-bill-2017\/14479\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">abandoned his own online-poker bill<\/a> like an orphan on the church steps, i-gambling is dead in <strong>New York State<\/strong> this year (unless you count daily fantasy sports).
