{"id":18509,"date":"2016-07-13T12:30:05","date_gmt":"2016-07-13T20:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=18509"},"modified":"2016-07-14T08:53:53","modified_gmt":"2016-07-14T16:53:53","slug":"lean-june-in-atlantic-city-respect-for-the-riff-raff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/lean-june-in-atlantic-city-respect-for-the-riff-raff\/","title":{"rendered":"Lean June in Atlantic City; Respect for the riff raff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just when it should have been booming with the summer season, <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> casino revenue fell 4% &#8212; $197.5 million &#8212; although online casino revenues rose 41% (to $16 <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6771\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Resorts AC\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>million). <strong>Resorts Digital<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; <em>aka<\/em> <strong>PokerStars<\/strong> &#8212; is still bringing up the rear, but it&#8217;s closing the gap, having raised its market share to 16.5% (<strong>Caesars Interactive<\/strong> has 18.5% and <strong>Borgata<\/strong> leads the market with 23%.) Luck magnified table and slot revenues at Borgata. Table play was 7% down and revenues dropped 12%. Slot handle rose 1% and casino winnings were up 4%. The megaresort grossed $56 million for a 1% decline.<\/p>\n<p>Other operators would like to have that problem. Their slot and table declines were indicative of 7% less table play and 3% less coin-in at <!--more-->the one-arm bandits. In its last strike-free month, <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> showed that some of CEO <strong>Anthony Rodio<\/strong>&#8216;s Mr. Fix-It moves were paying off, literally, as the casino grossed $17 million, a 13% increase. Below it were the <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong> ($16 million, off 8%) and <strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong> ($15 million, up 10%). Paradoxically, the improved results at the Taj might weaken Rodio&#8217;s bargaining position with the strikers: It&#8217;s harder to poor-mouth them when your revenues are on the upswing.<\/p>\n<p>Rodio&#8217;s other property, <strong>Tropicana Atlantic City<\/strong>, dipped 4% on a $24 million gross, while the <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> trio all had a bad month, to varying degrees. <strong>Bally&#8217;s Atlantic City<\/strong> slipped 3% to $17 million, while <strong>Caesars Atlantic City<\/strong> fell 11%, to $25 million, and <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Resort<\/strong> plunged 13% but still managed a $28 million haul, meaning that the second-highest grossing casino in Atlantic City did half as much business as Borgata did.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kSKqMdVu4Ts\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Great Britain<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Advertising Standards Authority<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2016\/jul\/06\/paddy-power-complaints-line-ad-fonejacker-star-banned\" target=\"_blank\">struck a blow for riff raff<\/a> when it chastised <strong>Paddy Power<\/strong> for advertising a <strong>Cheltenham<\/strong> racing promotion as open to &#8220;everyone &#8212; even riff raff.&#8221; The ASA looked into Paddy Power&#8217;s fine print and found that 99.5% of its customers were eligible but not &#8220;everyone.&#8221; So if you&#8217;re part of the excluded 0.5%, the ASA&#8217;s got your back, even if Paddy Power gets points for creative advertising.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just when it should have been booming with the summer season, Atlantic City casino revenue fell 4% &#8212; $197.5 million &#8212; although online casino revenues rose 41% (to $16 million).
