Mind you, this is a museum that would preserve many of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neonmuseum.org\/boneyard.html\" class=\"broken_link\">most evocative relics<\/a> of an industry that raked in <b>$12.8 billion<\/b> in gambling win in the Silver State last year.<\/p>\n<p>With so much money pouring into casino coffers, you&#8217;ll never convince me that a spare million and a half can&#8217;t be spared to make an <i>hommage<\/i> to the Strip icons of yesteryear. Heck, Steve Wynn probably loses that much under his sofa cushions.<\/p>\n<p><b>South Point owner Michael Gaughan<\/b> is the point man pushing for rescinding the ban on cell phone use in Nevada sports books. It&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2008\/feb\/18\/rethinking-ban-cell-phones-sports-books\">an idea worth debating<\/a> but there is one small fly in the ointment: Enforcement of the proposed new rule would rely on the honor system. We&#8217;re given the less-than-reassuring assurance that &#8220;most locals know the rules and don&#8217;t violate them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, and most people obey practically every law (except maybe speed limits). All it takes is a few rotten apples and &#8212; <b>kaboom!<\/b> &#8212; the majesty of the law is down upon Nevada and Delaware, not to mention any other state (like New Jersey) that is considering the legalization of sports betting. I&#8217;m just sayin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bo Belinsky<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2008\/feb\/19\/not-far-boxing-great-lies-forgotten-lefty-hurler\">remembered<\/a>. For some of us, he will be best known as the ex-husband of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.answers.com\/topic\/jo-collins?cat=entertainment\">1965 Playmate of the Year<\/a> <b>Jo Collins<\/b>. (No, tasteful nudity does <i>not<\/i> lurk beneath that link. Sorry, guys.)<\/p>\n<p><b>Elsewhere &#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Dictator steps down<\/b>, U.S. still <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20080219\/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe\/us_cuba;_ylt=AtBzC2uLCFn0OSqd4zs9PG2s0NUE\" class=\"broken_link\">cutting off nose<\/a> to spite face. Political posturing, <i>si!<\/i> Commerce? Free exchange of ideas? Cuban cigars?\u00a0<i>No!<\/i> I mean, Cuba is a dangerous superpower, not a free-speech-loving, human-rights-promoting, democratic, economically non-threatening, anti-Communist little country &#8212; like China. (Or, if you&#8217;re my age, &#8220;Red China.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Local columnist Hugh Jackson points out (in Jacksonian fashion) that a post-Fidel Cuba is probably A Good Thing for the casino industry. For American sugar beet producers &#8230; not so much.<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Las Vegas CityLife<\/b><\/i>, which &#8220;lends its dubious endorsement&#8221; to <i>S&amp;G<\/i>, among other fine blogs (including <b>VegasTodayAndTomorrow.com<\/b>) is launching a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lvcitylife.com\/cityblog\/2008\/02\/18\/race-war-much\" class=\"broken_link\">new rotating blog<\/a> of its own.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the pages of the Las Vegas Sun &#8230; For want of $1.5 million, work on the long-awaited Neon Museum has ground to a halt.
