It&#8217;s an idea that&#8217;s D.O.A. in <strong>Nevada<\/strong> and <strong>Kansas<\/strong> protected its flank by making the casinos the property of the state <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Penn-Plainvillle-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Penn-Plainvillle-3.jpg 257w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Penn-Plainvillle-3-150x114.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/>lottery. However, a study by the <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong> finds that lottery-ticket sales not only failed to decline around <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Plainridge Park<\/strong>, they continued to grow, albeit at a slower rate than other parts of the Bay State. There also has been little incidence of increased crime in the area. The MGC is keeping a watching brief on the issue and plans to monitor similar social phenomena in <strong>Springfield<\/strong> and <strong>Everett<\/strong>. Reports the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong>, &#8220;One oddity in the report is that while towns surrounding <strong>Plainridge<\/strong> had slower growth in lottery sales, <strong>Plainville<\/strong>, where the casino is located, had substantial growth.&#8221; Do casinos and lotteries coexist better than previously believed?<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Florida<\/strong> state Senate President <strong>Bill Galvano<\/strong> (R) seems to have put his foot in it when he proposed a wide-open expansion of <!--more-->gambling in the Sunshine State. Three years ago, he moonlit as a lawyer for <strong>Turnberry Associate<\/strong>s, owners of the <strong>Fontainebleau Hotel<\/strong>, which covets slot machines and was lavish with cash &#8220;including money that went to a political committee controlled by Galvano.&#8221; Oops. Galvano insists his Turnberry association had &#8220;no impact&#8221; on the new bill, while Turnberry itself went into ostrich mode, stonewalling media queries.<\/p>\n<p>In other Florida news &#8230; \u201cAs I told the lawyer for the state, I don\u2019t recall in my career an opposing party working so hard to keep my client from paying it hundreds of million of<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17756\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/scott.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/scott.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/scott-140x150.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>dollars \u2013 and it still is,\u201d <strong>Seminole Tribe<\/strong> attorney <strong>Barry Richard<\/strong> says of Gov. <strong>Rick Scott<\/strong>&#8216;s perverse attempt to <a href=\"http:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/230636-state-appeal-blackjack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pull the legs out from under<\/a>\u00a0Seminole blackjack. The tribe continues to collect the state&#8217;s share and put it into the <strong>General Revenue Fund<\/strong>. But Scott wants those games pull, regardless of the (negative) economic consequences and has filed suit with the <strong>11th Circuit Court of Appeals<\/strong>. Given the counterproductive nature of his handling of the Seminole issue, one wonders how Scott got anywhere in life.<\/p>\n<p>* Since the legalization of daily fantasy sports is coming before the <strong>Washington State Legislature<\/strong>, the tireless <strong>Poker Players Alliance<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardplayer.com\/poker-news\/21237-washington-state-holds-internet-poker-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">is spotting an opportunity<\/a> to get online poker before lawmakers, too. There&#8217;s no bill on the table but the PPA will testify in favor of one. <strong>Washington State<\/strong> solons have weighed Internet poker in the last two legislatures but come up short this time. That&#8217;s discouraging but it also shows that the issue has some persistent appeal. To demonstrate that poker is a game of skill, state Sen. <strong>Michael Baumgartner<\/strong> (R) took testimony from &#8220;math stud&#8221; and high school teacher <strong>David Schick<\/strong>, who plays online &#8212; a felony in Washington. Schick bearded the lion, testifying, &#8220;I realized that\u00a0the state law was just an absolute joke.\u00a0Nobody was being arrested. And so here I am admitting that I\u2019m a Class C felon. If that means I\u2019m going to be arrested, I guess I could be the first one.\u201d Let&#8217;s hope note.<\/p>\n<p>* Business is so good at <strong>Rivers Casino<\/strong> in <strong>Pittsburgh<\/strong> that <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong> is pitching a second, $35 million, 214-room hotel. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/business\/development\/2017\/01\/20\/Rivers-Casino-plans-to-build-35-million-hotel-Pittsburgh-North-Shore\/stories\/201701200121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Designed to harmonize<\/a> with the nearby <strong>Carnegie Science Center<\/strong>, it would open in 1Q18.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>States with lotteries are loath to let casinos in their borders.
