The latter&#8217;s <strong>Casa de <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1515\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Wayne-Newton-cover-299x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Wayne-Newton-cover-299x300.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Wayne-Newton-cover-299x300-149x150.jpg 149w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>Shenandoah<\/strong> is promoting itself as the new place to hold your meeting, offering to knock $250 off of every $1,000 on the sticker price. Who could resist? After all, conventioneers could find themselves rubbing elbows with Mr. Las Vegas himself, along with Arabian horses, penguins, monkeys and wallabies &#8212; to say nothing of the terrorist peacocks. Book your event now: Casa de Shenandoah can only host 550 conventioneers at a time. (And forget about holding meetings in the adjacent theater &#8212; it only seats 160 persons.)<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Illinois<\/strong> and <strong>Missouri<\/strong> casinos had better prepare to tighten their belts. Lawmakers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/govt-and-politics\/push-to-expand-gambling-underway-in-missouri-and-illinois\/article_bf5cdacb-7b54-5b7f-b0ea-627ec18c47bd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are proposing to bring slot machines<\/a>\u00a0to an auto speedway in the Land of Lincoln and slot routes to the Show-Me State. As <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>history has shown in Illinois, the effects can only be deleterious to casino revenues. Bars in Missouri would be limited to five video-gaming devices but organizations like the <strong>VFW<\/strong> could have as many as 10 per post. As usual, education funding is the premise for <!--more-->this cracking of the casino oligopoly. Specifically, Missouri state Rep. <strong>Bart Korman<\/strong> (R, <em>below<\/em>) wants to end cutbacks in school-busing programs.\u00a0\u201cWhen you look at the budget situation we have, I think it\u2019s something we need to have a conversation about,\u201d he told the <em>St. Louis Post-Dispatch<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If Korman&#8217;s bill passes (or a parallel version in the state Senate that would designate 35% of revenues collected for higher education), it will be a big day for the manufacturing sector. Illinois already has 25,000 slot-route units. (Most of the action<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/overseas-slot-sales-seen-reaching-highest-point-decade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> is overseas, however<\/a>.) Since gaming expansion is always the most <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Korman.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" \/>painless way of raising taxes, casino companies are going to need to go with the flow and obtain some slot routes for themselves, as <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> has already done. The <strong>Missouri Gaming Association<\/strong> is gearing up to oppose the legislation, while the <strong>Illinois Casino Gaming Association<\/strong> is against putting slots at <strong>Gateway Motorsports Park<\/strong> because <strong>GLPI<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Casino Queen<\/strong> is just five miles distant. On top of that, lawmakers who have clearly learned nothing from history are pushing for additional casinos in\u00a0<strong>Chicago<\/strong>, its south suburbs, <strong>Waukegan<\/strong>, <strong>Carterville<\/strong>, <strong>Rockford<\/strong> and <strong>Danville<\/strong>. Little good can come of that. The industry is a cow that can only give so much milk.<\/p>\n<p>* Chinese homeowners are <a href=\"http:\/\/macaudailytimes.com.mo\/macau-lifted-chinese-high-rollers-flush-home-prices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cashing in on their home equity<\/a> &#8212; sometimes through property lending &#8212; and using it to go and gamble <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>in <strong>Macao<\/strong>. (Sound familiar, Las Vegas?) When something like this happens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-02-26\/macau-lifted-by-chinese-high-rollers-flush-from-land-factories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">the chances of governmental intervention increase<\/a>. Or as <strong>Melco Crown Entertainment<\/strong> CEO <strong>Lawrence Ho<\/strong> recently told investors, \u201cI think VIP [play] has surprised in terms of its recovery. But at the same time, ultimately, the future of Macao is going to be pinned on the growth of the mass market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Bloomberg<\/strong> reports, &#8220;<strong>Vietnam<\/strong>\u2019s revolutionary founder <strong>Ho Chi Minh<\/strong> relied on lottery ticket sales to raise money for schools and hospitals during the war years. Now Hanoi\u2019s Communist leaders are looking to casinos, horse betting and modern lottery-ticket machines to do the same.&#8221; Who knew the Commies were going to be more progressive than\u00a0hidebound U.S. states like <strong>Georgia<\/strong> and <strong>South Carolina<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>With $800 million a year flowing out of Vietnam and into overseas casino offers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-02-27\/vietnam-wants-its-gamblers-staking-their-800-million-at-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">the guvmint wants to recapture much of that<\/a> and <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Ho-Chi-Minh.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Ho-Chi-Minh.jpeg 196w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Ho-Chi-Minh-114x150.jpeg 114w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/>rechannel it into the Viet economy. That means lifting the foreigners-only policy at domestic casinos, at least on a three-year, trial basis. (Depending on the quality of casinos in Vietnam, I think the move is irrevocable.) Says financial advisor <strong>Alexandre Legendre<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cThe fiscal situation of the country is under pressure.\u201d The lottery is already an impressive source of revenue: $13 billion over a recent five-year period. One lottery vendor grosses $1,300 a day from a well-placed ticket kiosk.<\/p>\n<p>In part to combat problem gambling (already an established vice, thanks to sports betting and the dog track), the locals-friendly casinos will be place well away from the population centers. Even allowing for that constraint, super hawk <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> wants to be first in one the market. Or, as <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> exec\u00a0<strong>George Tanasijevich<\/strong> puts it, the company is &#8220;eager to proceed&#8221; with Uncle Ho&#8217;s heirs.<\/p>\n<p>* But what will government officials in Macao, <strong>South Korea<\/strong> and <strong>Singapore<\/strong> think of Adelson&#8217;s implicit diss of their markets when he called <strong>Japan<\/strong> \u201cthe holy grail. It\u2019s the ultimate of business <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8864\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>opportunities. Singapore was a warm-up to this.\u201d Like <strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong>, which is willing to take as little as a 40% ownership stake in a Nipponese casino to as large as a 60% one, Adelson will have plenty of time to wait and dicker with potential partners. Rregulations aren&#8217;t expected to pass for another 15 months. Hard Rock CEO <strong>James Allen<\/strong>, who is vigorously shopping for joint-venture partners, told <strong>Reuters<\/strong>, &#8220;It\u2019s important to make sure our local partners are involved in the relationship, not just as blind investors.\u201d As the courtship continues, <strong>Yokohama<\/strong> is emerging as a preferred destination, with <strong>Tokyo<\/strong> fading from the discussion.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lleZBjn4mqk\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> casinos are upscaling their commitment to skill-based slots, with <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>\u00a0adding <strong>GameCo<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Pharaoh&#8217;s Secret Temple<\/em> and <strong>Tropicana Atlantic City<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/\u201cI play Xbox and I like video games, but if I want to do that, I\u2019ll just stay home. Here, I prefer games like blackjack or craps.\u201d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">starting to roll it out<\/a> along with GameCo&#8217;s <em>Danger Arena<\/em>. The SBGs are bombing with older slot players and even Millennials are having mixed feelings about them. Said one, \u201cI play Xbox and I like video games, but if I want to do that, I\u2019ll just stay home.
