However, <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo.jpg 274w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Penn-logo-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/>has an appetite for risk plus a track record of taking distressed properties and turning them around. So, in addition to running <strong>Hollywood Casino Tunica<\/strong>, it will soon be in charge of <strong>Resorts Casino Tunica<\/strong> and <strong>Bally&#8217;s Casino Tunica<\/strong>, in a transaction announced this morning. Despite the latter&#8217;s brand name, it is not a <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> property. &#8220;Bally&#8217;s&#8221; is sublicensed by outgoing owner <strong>RIH Holdings<\/strong>. Penn and partner <strong>Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties Inc<\/strong>. snapped up the pair of gambling houses for a bargain-price $127 million. (The low price tells you something about depressed the Tunica market has become.) Resorts defaulted to its creditors several years ago when <strong>Colony Capital<\/strong> over-leveraged the property, under CEO <strong>Tom Barrack<\/strong>&#8216;s reckless leadership.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We view this as a good, albeit little, accretive deal for both companies, and while Tunica is not <!--more-->a great\/growing market, we view the purchase price as relatively attractive,&#8221; wrote <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> gaming analysts, who said there would be &#8220;modest&#8221; capital reinvestment in two properties. Added <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong>, &#8220;We believe the combination of the now three assets can help overall margins in the region.&#8221; <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Resorts-Tunica.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Resorts-Tunica.jpeg 299w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Resorts-Tunica-150x84.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>Bally&#8217;s has the advantage of being closest to <strong>Memphis<\/strong> while Resorts is Hollywood&#8217;s next-door neighbor, so there may be some synergies to be captured there. GLPI will own the physical assets of the two casinos and Penn will operate them, with both companies splitting the purchase price. These are mid-sized casinos: Bally&#8217;s has\u00a0947 slots and 16 table games while Resorts owns\u00a0800 slot machines and 9 table games. Penn&#8217;s definitely taking a gamble here but let&#8217;s give them the benefit of the doubt and presume they see opportunities that are not immediately apparent to others.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the Penn\/GLPI empire, lead performer\u00a0<strong>Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course<\/strong> is getting rewarded. Fifty new VLTs are going in and Penn is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/metro\/index.ssf\/2017\/03\/hollywood_gaming_expansion.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">adding a high-limit area<\/a>. The <strong>Ohio<\/strong> racino recently nipped <strong>Plainridge Park<\/strong> for the highest win\/slot\/day in all of Penn&#8217;s markets.<\/p>\n<p>* A shorter February and an earlier Chinese New Year conspired to pull <strong>Nevada<\/strong> gaming revenues down 4.5%. Slot players on the Strip <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/fremont-street-experience-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/fremont-street-experience-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/fremont-street-experience-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/fremont-street-experience.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>put 2% less coin into the one-armed bandits but revenue fell 5%. \u00a0The house was unluckier still at baccarat, with players wagering 16% less than last year and winnings down 21%. Other table games fared slightly better, with 6% less wagering translating into 5.5% less win, As for locals play, despite some end-of-January slot play being rolled into February&#8217;s numbers, the house was down 5%.<\/p>\n<p>If the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> was down 5%, <strong>Downtown<\/strong> was up 2%, <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong> slipped 7%, the <strong>Boulder Strip<\/strong> fell 9% and <strong>Laughlin<\/strong> was flat. Outlying <strong>Clark County<\/strong> markets like <strong>Mesquite<\/strong> and <strong>Primm<\/strong> were down 2%. Upstate, <strong>Reno<\/strong> tumbled 7% and so did <strong>Lake Tahoe<\/strong>.
