{"id":19634,"date":"2017-04-19T10:23:56","date_gmt":"2017-04-19T18:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=19634"},"modified":"2017-04-19T11:05:55","modified_gmt":"2017-04-19T19:05:55","slug":"big-bounce-in-louisiana-poker-and-booze-go-better-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/big-bounce-in-louisiana-poker-and-booze-go-better-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Big bounce in Louisiana; Poker and booze go better together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Compared with a flood-plagued March of 2015, business was booming \u00a0at <strong>Louisiana<\/strong> casinos, up 10%, especially <strong>Baton Rouge<\/strong> (+20.5%), although <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> was flat. <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff\u00a0<\/strong>is predicting less salubrious results in April, blaming the Easter <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Horseshoe-Bossier-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Horseshoe-Bossier-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Horseshoe-Bossier-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Horseshoe-Bossier.jpg 534w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Bunny, among other factors. Last month saw very fewer poor performers, led by <strong>Harrah&#8217;s New Orleans<\/strong> ($22 million, -9%), <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Evangeline Downs<\/strong> ($7 million, -6%) and <strong>Diamond Jack&#8217;s<\/strong> in <strong>Shreveport<\/strong>\/<strong>Bossier City<\/strong> ($4 million, -9.5%). Boyd also had a poor month at <strong>Amelia Belle<\/strong> ($4 million, -6%) and good ones at <strong>Treasure Chest<\/strong> ($10 million, +10%) and <strong>Sam&#8217;s Town Shreveport<\/strong> ($7.5 million, +8.5%). Boyd&#8217;s breakout performer was <strong>Delta Downs<\/strong>, up 26% to $17 million. <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> also had a very, very good March at <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Louisiana Downs<\/strong>, up 29.5% to $4 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lake Charles<\/strong> dominated the Pelican State both in total gross ($80 million on the nose) and percentage improvement. <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong> shot up 23.5% to $25 million while <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>L&#8217;Auberge du Lac<\/strong> grossed $27 million (up 9%). Even <!--more--><strong>Isle of Capri<\/strong> got in on the action, improving 5% to $11 million. Dominant players upstate were <strong>Horseshoe Bossier City<\/strong> ($18 million, +12%), <strong>Eldorado Shreveport<\/strong> ($13 million, +5.5%) and <strong>Margaritavill<\/strong>e ($13 million, +12%).<\/p>\n<p>In New Orleans, only Harrah&#8217;s did poorly. <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Fair Grounds<\/strong> racino grossed $4.5 million (+8%) and <strong>Boomtown New Orleans<\/strong> ($11 million) was up 10.5%. The biggest market improvement &#8212; 20.5% &#8212; was in <strong>Baton Rouge<\/strong>. There, <strong>L&#8217;Auberge Baton Rouge<\/strong> did $17 million (+26%), <strong>Tropicana Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Belle of Baton Rouge<\/strong> pulled in $6 million (+8.5%) and <strong>GLPI<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Casino Rouge<\/strong> managed an 18% improvement to $7 million. Now we&#8217;ll sit back and wait to see if the Easter Bunny really stole any April business.<\/p>\n<p>* &#8220;It&#8217;s going to end up as the <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> of <strong>Connecticut<\/strong>. It&#8217;s going to be filing for bankruptcy in 30 days.&#8221; So said hired gun <strong>Clyde Barrow<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courant.com\/business\/hc-casino-expansion-hearingrecovered-mon-apr-17-134445-2017--20170417-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">testifying on behalf<\/a> of <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> and <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong>. The latter two released a Barrow-penned report <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>that concluded not only would a casino in <strong>Bridgeport<\/strong> fail to replace lost slot revenue from the two existing casinos, it would be poleaxed by competition from the <strong>New York City<\/strong> area. Heck, who&#8217;s going to go to Bridgeport if you can play at <strong>Resorts World New York<\/strong>? <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>&#8216;s counsel, <strong>Uri Clinton<\/strong> had rather a weak counter-argument: Saturation is coming so cash in now. Or, as he said, &#8220;But if that&#8217;s true, I think its incumbent on this body to look for a way to maximize your next \u2014 maybe your final \u2014 but your next casino.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it&#8217;s difficult to imagine one MGM casino, no matter how nice, generating enough scratch to surpass or even equal the $267 million <strong>Hartford<\/strong> currently collects from the Pequots and Mohegans. Like <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Christopher-Davis.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Christopher-Davis.jpeg 180w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Christopher-Davis-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><em>S&amp;G<\/em>, state Rep. <strong>Christopher Davis<\/strong> (R) is skeptical about MGM&#8217;s sudden solicitude for Bridgeport. I&#8217;m just pointing out to the public and to members of this committee that under no circumstances is there a requirement for MGM to actually move forward with any proposal &#8230; in fact, you guys might be doing this for other alternative motives to slow down the tribes from being able to build their casino rather than &#8230;\u00a0being able to build another casino in southwestern Connecticut,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton denied there was any stalling at work but state Senate Majority Leader <strong>Bob Duff<\/strong> (D), a tribal ally, urged his fellow lawmakers to get on with it. &#8220;MGM is building and &#8230; the only winner will be MGM and the state of <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Who knew the poker gets better the drunker you are? That&#8217;s the contention of a\u00a0report from Massachusetts, where the Lege is pondering a bill that would permit casinos to extend alcohol sales from a 2 a.m. cutoff to 4 a.m. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardplayer.com\/poker-news\/21550-massachusetts-lawmakers-consider-bill-that-could-give-boost-to-upcoming-poker-rooms\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">The only catch<\/a> is that you have to be &#8220;actively engaged&#8221; in gambling. Since you&#8217;re paying for the privilege of imbibing, what difference does it make whether you&#8217;re playing or not?<\/p>\n<p>* A reported 3,400 Chinese tourists refused to disembark at <strong>Jeju Island<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/landings-new-jeju-project-opening-some-facilities-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\">to protest South Korean missile tests<\/a>. Who knew that gamblers had such willpower, passing up the chance to play in order to make a political statement?<\/p>\n<p>* Speaking of <strong>South Korea<\/strong>, that country&#8217;s <strong>DoubleU Games<\/strong> is in the news. <strong>International Game Technology<\/strong> has reversed field on its controversial purchase of <strong>Double Down Interactive<\/strong> and sold it to DoubleU for $825 million.
