Against this backdrop comes news that opening of <strong>MGM Grand Cotai<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/mgm-cotai-to-open-in-fourth-quarter-2017-murren\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will miss the Golden Week holiday<\/a>, although <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> promised, &#8220;it\u2019s going to open this year for sure and it\u2019s going to be very spectacular.\u201d Still, you&#8217;d think completion by Golden Week would have been a higher priority, no matter how spectacular your new megaresort. MGM&#8217;s biggest challenge will be obtaining a viable number of table games, as it has the least number of any Macao operator that can be cannibalized from <strong>MGM Grand Paradise<\/strong>.\u00a0On the plus side, <!--more-->MGM achieved a 13% increase in slot play while cutting its inventory by 14%. It also improved cash flow from $114 million in 1Q16 to $143 million in 1Q17.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2017\/01\/29\/the-point\/a-casino-moguls-controversial-trail-runs-from-maine-to-laos-and-back-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shady casino speculator<\/a> Shawn Scott&#8217;s machinations in <strong>Maine<\/strong> are drawing the ire of legislators, particularly after it emerged that sister <strong>Lisa Scott<\/strong>, ostensibly a financial backer, was acting as a cutout for backers in <strong>Nevada<\/strong> and <strong>Japan<\/strong>. While Lisa was saying \u201cI personally plan to oversee this project and am committed to assembling a world-class team resulting in a facility that all of Maine can be proud of,\u201d <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Garrett-Mason.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Garrett-Mason.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Garrett-Mason-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>brother Shawn was <a href=\"https:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2017\/03\/29\/news\/state\/lawmakers-blast-maine-casino-bid-after-backers-admit-offshore-backing\/?ref=moreInpolitics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">planning a flip<\/a>. Said state Sen. <strong>Garrett Mason<\/strong> (R, <em>pictured<\/em>), &#8220;we have major corruption issues in front of us here.\u00a0I would just say that if the government of <strong>Laos<\/strong> thinks you\u2019re corrupt, we have a major problem.\u201d (Shawn Scott was kicked out of Laos; the dispute is currently under arbitration.)<\/p>\n<p>Solons <a href=\"http:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2017\/04\/30\/the-point\/a-quirk-in-maines-constitution-could-keep-casino-question-off-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are considering a couple of options<\/a>. One would be to pre-empt the referendum by voting to approve the casino, then holding another vote to revoke the first one. (It&#8217;s obscure but legal.) An alternative pitched by Sen. <strong>Russell Collins<\/strong> (R) would bar casino operators from selling their facilities for 10 years after opening. Since Scott would never pass muster with Maine regulators, that would leave him with an asset he couldn&#8217;t monetize or flip. Legislators of both parties are so keen to be rid of the Scotts that they allowed the Collins bill to be introduced late in the session. Where Shawn Scott goes, trouble follows.<\/p>\n<p>* Although the Trump administration was expected to be hostile to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-18042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Taunton-casino-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Taunton-casino-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Taunton-casino-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Taunton-casino.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>tribal-gaming interests, the <strong>Mashpee Wampanoag<\/strong> tribe has received intelligence that the <strong>Interior Department<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/business\/business_markets\/2017\/04\/massachusetts_tribe_hopes_to_resume_building_casino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">will reverse itself and allow Project First Light to move forward<\/a>. The new decree is expected in six weeks or so. Still, the Mashpee Wampanoag are playing it cool, keeping construction on hold until <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, makes its feelings known.<\/p>\n<p>* Unless <strong>PokerStars<\/strong> removes itself from contention for Internet gambling in <strong>California<\/strong>, it&#8217;s extremely unlikely that prevailing legislative stalemate will be resolved. &#8220;At one point the debate became so heated that [Assemblyman <strong>Adam<\/strong>] <strong>Gray<\/strong> had to call in the sergeant at arms,&#8221; reports <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em>. The PokerStars coalition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardplayer.com\/poker-news\/21599-new-hope-for-california-online-poker-tribal-group-drops-pokerstars-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">is crumbling a bit, having lost<\/a> the <strong>San Manuel Band of Mission Indians<\/strong> having withdrawn. The continuing impasse has caused\u00a0Assemblyman <strong>Reggie Jones-Sawyer<\/strong> to admit defeat for the current legislative session.
