{"id":19710,"date":"2017-05-09T07:14:30","date_gmt":"2017-05-09T15:14:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=19710"},"modified":"2020-12-31T06:49:36","modified_gmt":"2020-12-31T14:49:36","slug":"big-month-in-maryland-kentucky-derby-sets-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/big-month-in-maryland-kentucky-derby-sets-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Big month in Maryland; Kentucky Derby sets record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MGM National Harbor<\/strong> took the top spot in <strong>Maryland<\/strong> last month, <a href=\"http:\/\/wtop.com\/business-finance\/2017\/05\/mgm-generating-1-every-3-md-gaming-revenue-dollars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">grossing $50 million<\/a> to <strong>Maryland Live<\/strong>&#8216;s $45 million. &#8220;We view this as positive\/encouraging for MGM, as it shows the property\u2019s momentum has sustained into April,&#8221; wrote <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong>. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/maryland-live.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/maryland-live.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/maryland-live-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The two casinos took in $279\/slot\/day and $246 respectively, healthy numbers indeed, although Maryland Live revenues fell 21.5%. <strong>Horseshoe Baltimore<\/strong> also took a hard hit, down 19% to $24.5 million. By contrast, <strong>Rocky Gap Casino<\/strong> continued on the comeback trail for <strong>Golden Entertainment<\/strong>, up 10% ($4.5 million), while <strong>Ocean Downs<\/strong> was up 3% to $5 million. <strong>Hollywood Casino Perryville<\/strong>, the little casino that couldn&#8217;t, fell 8% to $6.5 million. So far, <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Charles Town<\/strong> casino in <strong>West Virginia<\/strong> has lost 7% of slot play and 17% of table play, as National Harbor chips into its market share.<\/p>\n<p>* It was a month of swings and roundabouts in <strong>Illinois<\/strong>. The big number, a 2.5% decline in casino revenue would seem to suggest that <!--more-->slot routes continue to erode casino routes. But it&#8217;s not simple. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Penn\/GLPI properties had the worst of it, with <strong>Hollywood Aurora<\/strong> down 10.5% and <strong>Empress Joliet<\/strong> slipping 8%, both grossing $10 million. However, <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Joliet<\/strong> was up 5%, to $16.5 million, while monster <strong>Rivers Casino<\/strong> up 2% to $37 million. <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> was down 2% to $15 million.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>St. Louis<\/strong> market, <strong>Argosy Belle<\/strong> was 2% off the pace and GLPI&#8217;s <strong>Casino Queen<\/strong> slipped 2.%, grossing $4 million and $9.5 million, respectively. <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Par-A-Dice<\/strong> had another hard month, down 10% for a $7 million gross. <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Metropolis<\/strong> was off 7% to $7 million and <strong>Jumer&#8217;s Casino<\/strong> Rock Island slid 16% to $6 million.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong> had a banner <strong>Kentucky Derby<\/strong> at its eponymous racetrack, with a record handle of $139 million wagered on the race. The company might have tabled the $16 million it spent (with more to come) on renovating the track: Attendance was 5% down this year.<\/p>\n<p>* MGM is dipping a toe in the skill-based slots waters, installing two <strong>Gamblit<\/strong> games in the <strong>Level Up<\/strong> lounge. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.worldcasinodirectory.com\/additional-skill-games-added-in-nevada-via-gamblit-gaming-46408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caesars is also moving cautiously<\/a>, adding a pair of SBS machines to <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Lake Tahoe<\/strong>. If they catch on, prepare to see a surge of installations but for now casinos are hanging back, waiting to see if the SBS games resonate with customers, Millennials especially.<\/p>\n<p>* It&#8217;s official: <strong>Galaxy Entertainment<\/strong> is throwing its green eyeshade into the ring for a Japanese casino. Spurning a Japanese joint-venture partner, Galaxy is teaming with\u00a0<strong>Societ\u00e9 des Bains de Mer<\/strong>.
