This prompted a swift response from the\u00a0<strong>Schaghticoke Tribal Nation<\/strong>, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hartfordbusiness.com\/article\/20170524\/NEWS01\/170529979\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">promised a lawsuit<\/a> (probably <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Malloy-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Malloy-1.jpeg 254w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Malloy-1-150x117.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/>financed by <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>). Gov. <strong>Dannel Malloy<\/strong> (D) threw his support behind the satellite casino, saying,\u00a0&#8220;the legislature should remain focused on maintaining the state&#8217;s longstanding partnership with the <strong>Mohegan<\/strong> and <strong>Mashantucket Pequot<\/strong> tribal nations and protecting jobs.&#8221; In other words, don&#8217;t imperil that $260 million a year in slot revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Schaghticoke Chief <strong>Richard Velky<\/strong> responded,\u00a0&#8220;If the citizens of Connecticut want a better deal and a proposal where the numbers <!--more-->add up, the open, competitive process is not only the right thing to do \u2013 it turns out to be the most financially responsible thing to do as well.&#8221; <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-19480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/east-windsor-casino-rendering.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Malloy should be less concerned about that than about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhregister.com\/general-news\/20170524\/connecticut-house-leaders-we-cant-pass-tribal-casino-bill-in-current-form\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">dissension among his Democratic fellows<\/a> in the House of Representatives, who say the Senate bill is a non-starter. As\u00a0Speaker <strong>Joe Aresimowicz<\/strong> (D) said,\u00a0 \u201cwe shouldn\u2019t be giving the exclusive rights to anyone.\u201d He also indicated that some kind of tribal <em>quid pro quo<\/em> was in order, saying,\u00a0\u201cWe believe expanded gambling in Connecticut is worth something in the bidding process. The Senate didn\u2019t think so. We respectfully disagree.\u201d That last sentence translates as &#8220;Nothing doing.&#8221; This issue is a long way from being resolved.<\/p>\n<p>* The frontrunner status of <strong>Osaka<\/strong> and <strong>Yokohama<\/strong> for Japanese casinos isn&#8217;t going over so well with smaller cities, who fear they&#8217;ll lose <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Shinzo-Abe-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>out on the economic status promised by Prime Minister <strong>Shinzo Abe<\/strong>. But <i>gaijin<\/i> casino operators say it only makes sense to invest in the major metropolitan areas. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2017\/05\/25\/national\/revival-seeking-rural-japan-feels-left-casino-plans-favor-major-cities\/#.WSg8oMaZO9Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It&#8217;s not just a question of population centers<\/a> but of proximity to the major airports. (<strong>Tokyo<\/strong> factors heavily in the discussions, but height restrictions are an issue there.) Grumbled the governor of <strong>Wakayama<\/strong>, \u201cWhere did the view that this was for local revitalization go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marina Bay Sands<\/strong> CEO <strong>George Tanasijevich<\/strong> was unrepentant. \u201cThe location that works best for our business model is the major cities, so we\u2019re talking about Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka,&#8221; he said. \u201cWe need to be in a major city that\u2019s connected to a major international airport so <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Japan-flag-300x211.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Japan-flag-300x211.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Japan-flag-150x105.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Japan-flag.gif 497w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>we can bring in the millions of people that we want to host at our property.\u201d MGM&#8217;s <strong>Ed Bowers<\/strong> was even blunter: \u201cMGM\u2019s business model is to build large-scale destination resorts with lots of stuff that cost a lot of money. So it needs to be in a high-density population area, and obviously the ones to be mentioned are Tokyo, Osaka and Yokohama. So we\u2019re focused on those three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Revenue projections for Japan continue to be aggressive, with <strong>CLSA<\/strong> predicting $25 billion a year from three casinos, an amount so lucrative as to border on the preposterous. At least one casino company is courting smaller cities, namely <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>. No doubt the lower cost of entry to a second-tier city plays somewhat in Caesars&#8217; thinking but it&#8217;s good strategy any way you slice it. Given the high level of public opposition to casinos&#8217;, dividing <strong>Japan<\/strong> into haves and have-nots seems like less than an optimal strategy for seeding good will.<\/p>\n<p>* That Class II tribal casino on <strong>Martha&#8217;s Vineyard<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/business\/business_markets\/2017\/05\/appeals_court_passes_on_vineyard_tribe_s_gaming_hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will have to wait a bit longer<\/a>. Declining to hear the case, the <strong>First Circuit Court of Appeals<\/strong> stayed the <strong>Aquinnah Wampanoag<\/strong> from developing their electronic bingo hall until the city&#8217;s complaint is heard by the <strong>Supreme Court<\/strong>. The tribe is <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Heakey.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Heakey.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Heakey-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>bucking the opposition of Gov. <strong>Charlie Baker<\/strong>, state Attorney General <strong>Maura Healey<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>right<\/em>) and <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong>\u00a0Chairman <strong>Stephen Crosby<\/strong>.\u00a0But it&#8217;s not taking that lying down. Tribal Chairwoman <strong>Cheryl Andrews-Maltais<\/strong> said, &#8220;when they are ready to stop wasting time and precious resources on further appeals, we remain ready, willing and able to collaborate with the town and commonwealth on the issue of the gaming project\u2019s potential impact and positive opportunities for our citizens.\u201d Whether you agree or not, you have to admire their fighting spirit.<\/p>\n<p>* How sad is your card room if its venue is an ex-<strong>Pizza Hut<\/strong>? The owners of little <strong>Paso Robles Central Coast Casino<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanluisobispo.com\/news\/local\/article152509104.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">have plans to remedy that<\/a>, though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Connecticut&#8216;s controversial satellite casino has been voted through the state Senate.
