Nelson Rose<\/strong> predicts the <strong>Supreme Court<\/strong> will rule in <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>&#8216;s favor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/us-supreme-court-takes-up-nj-sports-betting-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with regard to sports betting<\/a>. As he <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5951\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/nelson-rose-gambling-law.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/nelson-rose-gambling-law.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/nelson-rose-gambling-law-127x150.jpg 127w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>notes, &#8220;[Chief Justice <strong>John Roberts<\/strong>] and the other conservative members of the Court would like to knock out every federal law that prevents states from making their own decisions.&#8221; <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> President <strong>Geoff Freeman<\/strong> risked counting his chickens before they hatch, saying,\u00a0\u201cToday\u2019s decision, despite the eventual outcome in the court, is another nail in the coffin of the failed federal prohibition of sports betting &#8230;\u00a0Whether the court rules it unconstitutional or not, Congress can no longer ignore the failings of this law over the past 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His bromance with <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> well and truly over, Garden State Gov. <strong>Chris Christie<\/strong> (R) thinks the present administration <!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/chalk\/story\/_\/id\/19736525\/the-supreme-court-hear-new-jersey-sports-betting-appeal-happens-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is in the enemy camp on the issue<\/a>. He can take consolation in the views of <strong>Tulane University<\/strong> sports-law boffin <strong>Gabe Feldman<\/strong>, who opines,\u00a0&#8220;The New Jersey sports betting case may ultimately be a footnote in the eventual legalization of sports gambling in the <strong>United States<\/strong>.&#8221; Other pundits argue that <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.sports.yahoo.com\/news\/legalized-sports-gambling-just-got-one-step-closer-162342612.html?src=rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the ban is an anachronism<\/a>, while noting that the Supremes&#8217; decision will hinge upon Tenth Amendment issues. Looking past the legalese, <strong>UNLV<\/strong>&#8216;s Dr. <strong>David G. Schwartz<\/strong> says that there&#8217;s been a relative lack of movement for sports betting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/supreme-court-sports-gambling_us_595266dae4b0da2c731e9448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">because it is a low-profit enterprise<\/a> when compared to lotteries. (See autoplay video.)<\/p>\n<p>As far as the down and distance of <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/27\/news\/new-jersey-sports-betting\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">the sports-betting debate<\/a> is concerned, Christie said it best.\u00a0&#8220;We&#8217;re not declaring victory but at least we&#8217;re in the game and that&#8217;s where we want to be,&#8221; he remarked.<\/p>\n<p>* As long as we are on the subject of the Trump administration, <em>S&amp;G<\/em> would like to draw your attention to <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/article\/trump-troubles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an excellent article<\/a> by <strong>Dave Palermo<\/strong> that examines the likely pros and cons of its relationship to Indian country. Depending on what was most expedient for him at the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Trump-in-LV-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Trump-in-LV-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Trump-in-LV-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Trump-in-LV.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>time, Trump himself has been on all sides of the tribal-gaming debate. The overarching conclusion of Palermo&#8217;s examination of the nascent Trump administration&#8217;s policy to date is that we are likely to see a slowing of the growth in tribal gaming but there&#8217;s no reason yet to break out the lifejackets.<\/p>\n<p>However, for the present at least, land-into-trust applications &#8220;will slow dramatically,&#8221; in part because they will all be routed through <strong>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/strong> headquarters in <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, instead of being decided on a regional basis. Also, acting Deputy Secretary <strong>James Cason<\/strong>, a returnee from the <strong>George W. Bush<\/strong> administration, was responsible for the stranglehold that the latter put on land-into-trust applications. Interior officials who feel that the <strong>Barack Obama<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19881\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Rob_Bishop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Rob_Bishop.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Rob_Bishop-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>administration overcompensated, particularly toward the end, are going to want to put the brakes back on land transfers. \u201cWhile the last-minute nature of these actions does not necessarily imply wrongdoing, it begs scrutiny,\u201d wrote Rep. <strong>Rob Bishop<\/strong> (R), chairman of the House Resources Committee, citing &#8220;concerns with off-reservation gambling.\u201d (It should be noted that casinos played on a microscopic role in land transfers under Obama.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pressure is building to swing the pendulum back the other way. They\u2019re looking to change things when it comes to Indian lands in a way that will hurt us,\u201d complains former Obama counsel <strong>Bryan Newland<\/strong>. \u201cThough tribes and the BIA now have a more than a half-million acres of new lands to manage, Trump seeks to slash $15 million from the real estate staff managing such lands,\u201d adds former Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs <strong>Kevin Washburn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The consensus is that land-into-trust applications are going to get harder to obtain. T&#8221;hey are going to have a difficult path, regardless of what the administration policy is,\u201d says tribal-gaming expert <strong>Alan Meister<\/strong>. Several commentators say there is room for hope, with one noting that it was Cason who issued the letter saying that a tribal satellite casino <strong>Connecticut<\/strong> was OK under <strong>IGRA<\/strong>. With the <strong>Interior Department<\/strong> presently understaffed, it&#8217;s a waiting game to see what the ultimate direction of Indian-related policy will be.<\/p>\n<p>* Although it stumbled out of the gate, the <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong> is now the unlikely leader in New Jersey&#8217;s <strong>Internet<\/strong> gaming industry. The adverse beginning, perversely, <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/article\/how-david-slew-goliath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worked in the casino&#8217;s favor<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Going out on a limb, I.
