{"id":19994,"date":"2017-07-27T07:12:03","date_gmt":"2017-07-27T15:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=19994"},"modified":"2017-07-27T08:06:36","modified_gmt":"2017-07-27T16:06:36","slug":"the-allure-of-brazil-draftkings-blows-a-gasket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/the-allure-of-brazil-draftkings-blows-a-gasket\/","title":{"rendered":"The allure of Brazil; DraftKings blows a gasket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Jan Jones Blackhurst<\/strong> has really been racking up the frequent-flier miles on behalf of <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>, having made multiple <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Jones-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Jones-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Jones-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Jones.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>trips to <strong>Brazil<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/las-vegas-casino-companies-consider-expansion-in-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to assess the potential for casinos<\/a> down there. She&#8217;s narrowed down the possible sites to\u00a0<strong>Brasilia<\/strong>, <strong>Sao Paulo<\/strong>, <strong>Salvador da Bahia<\/strong> and (of course) <strong>Rio de Janeiro<\/strong>, although her top pick might surprise you.\u00a0\u201cPersonally, I like Brasilia,&#8221; the original <strong>CityCenter<\/strong>, &#8220;because it\u2019s the capital and many affluent people live there. It\u2019s very safe.\u201d Over at <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong>, President <strong>Rob Goldstein<\/strong> seconded Jones&#8217; enthusiasm, noting that Brazil (like <strong>Japan<\/strong>) has a large population base.\u00a0\u201cHe decided to have a look for himself and he was impressed with what he saw,\u201d said Goldstein of CEO <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>&#8216;s May reconnaissance of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there&#8217;s the little matter of casinos being presently illegal <!--more-->in Brazil. Barring any enabling legislation (two bills are floating around <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein.jpg 148w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Goldstein-111x150.jpg 111w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" \/>the Brazilian parliament), never mind regulation, Goldstein said it was &#8220;early innings&#8221; for U.S. operators looking southward for expansion, although he did note that Sao Paolo&#8217;s enormous population made it a prime location. Jones added that entry into Brazil would be contingent on a tax rate that allowed for a good ROI, not to mention regulations that were of a probity level with which American companies would be comfortable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> was more circumspect about the extent of its Brazilian ambitions, merely saying it was &#8220;interested&#8221; and &#8220;monitoring&#8221; current events.\u00a0\u201cIn the case of Brazil, it\u2019s unclear because you don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen there. It\u2019s in flux with all these accusations and national headlines,\u201d explained Sands&#8217; Goldstein, alluding to the <strong>Operation Car Wash<\/strong> scandal, involving money laundering, bribery and kickbacks at state-owned oil company <strong>Petrobras<\/strong>. As we&#8217;ve seen in the <strong>Philippines<\/strong>, American companies fight shy of jurisdictions that are synonymous with corruption.<\/p>\n<p>* Remember those mansions along the eastern side of the <strong>Desert Inn Golf Course<\/strong> that <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong> clawed away from their owners (even shutting off their water) back when <strong>Wynn Las Vegas<\/strong> was a-borning? El Steve is <a href=\"https:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2017\/jul\/25\/wynn-says-he-has-most-precious-piece-of-real-estat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finally planning to monetize the acreage<\/a>, opening up <strong>Wynncore<\/strong> to <strong>Paradise Road<\/strong> and he says he&#8217;s got joint-venture partners on the line. As with anything Wynn-related, this will bear close watching, although the CEO is being coy about his plans at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Over in <strong>Macao<\/strong>, Wynn&#8217;s casinos produced a 7% revenue increase but room revenues took a bath (down 12%) in 2Q17. That mirrors weakness <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/wynn_feature-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/wynn_feature-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/wynn_feature-150x81.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/wynn_feature.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>in mass-market play, which Wynn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/07\/25\/steve-wynn-cautions-against-short-term-myopia-in-defending-macau-mass-market-softness.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blames partly on construction disruption<\/a> over at <strong>MGM Grand Cotai<\/strong>. &#8220;We&#8217;re literally surrounded on four sides by things that are under construction that will all add to our mass,&#8221; he explained. Mind you, Wynn&#8217;s crying all the way to the bank, since Macao generated 180% more revenue than Wynncore.\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s very important that you don&#8217;t get caught up in the very short-term myopia that your professions demand in many respects,&#8221; Wynn lectured analysts. &#8220;When we look at the numbers that you&#8217;re looking at &#8230; we say the train is on schedule.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for the oncoming smoking ban, <strong>Wynn Macau<\/strong>\u00a0President<strong> Ian Coughlan<\/strong> said that, in terms of infrastructure, his casinos weren&#8217;t able to enjoy a level playing field. &#8220;We will be the biggest beneficiary of that because we&#8217;re operating handicapped right now,&#8221; he said of the citywide ban that will be enacted in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/calvinayre.com\/2017\/07\/25\/business\/massachusetts-commission-report-online-poker-casino-legalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">putting the cart before the horse<\/a> if legalizes i-poker and <strong>Internet<\/strong> casinos before its brick-and-mortar casinos are up and running. That&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/91824424\/NYRA-Interim-Report-Takeout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the conclusion<\/a> of the <strong>Special Commission on Online Gaming, Fantasy Sports Gaming &amp; Daily Fantasy Sports<\/strong> (whew!). The Special Commission made an exception for DFS, saying it favored\u00a0\u201clegalizing DFS as a subset of online gaming and <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Massachusetts-capitol-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Massachusetts-capitol-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Massachusetts-capitol-150x80.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Massachusetts-capitol.jpg 459w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>enacting legislation that would put into law the proposed regulatory, governance and taxation system.\u201d Despite that go-ahead, <strong>DraftKings<\/strong> spokesman <strong>James Chisholm<\/strong> threw a hissy fit over the definition of DFS as gaming, wailing that it\u00a0\u201ccould impact our ability\u201d to do business in Massachusetts. In other words, DraftKings is threatening to take its ball and go to a new home. DFS may require &#8220;special skills,&#8221; but so too do casino games ranging from baccarat to certain breeds of slot machine.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that DFS is provisionally legal in Massachusetts, thanks to Attorney General <strong>Maura Healey<\/strong> and Gov. <strong>Charlie Baker<\/strong> (R), DraftKings doth protest too much. It should probably direct its attention to meeting the July 31, 2018 deadline for formal legalization rather than spewing hot air at the Special Commission.<\/p>\n<p>* Despite some early hiccups with its skill-based slot machines, <strong>GameCo<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/skill-based-gambling-machine-manufacturer-targets-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is now looking beyond<\/a> the <strong>United States<\/strong>, to slot-mad <strong>Australia<\/strong>, where punters are said to play &#8220;at near-epidemic levels.&#8221; Meanwhile, chief rival <strong>Gamblit<\/strong> is making inroads in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, with contracts at <strong>Caesars Palace<\/strong>, <strong>Linq<\/strong> and <strong>Paris-Las Vegas<\/strong>, as well as at <strong>MGM Grand<\/strong>. Gamblit exec <strong>Darion Lowenstein<\/strong> already likes what he sees: \u201cWe are averaging players nearly 20 years younger than those of a slot player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* How important <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/article\/above-beyond-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are tribal casinos to the American economy<\/a>? A new report on <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong> shows that its industry <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulsaworld.com\/business\/employment\/indian-gaming-helps-drive-rural-oklahoma-economies-report-finds\/article_56ce79af-bf92-5513-88d3-656a13f90a05.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">employs 28,000 people<\/a>, two-thirds of whom are rural and 57% of whom are non-tribal.
