Ist California kaput?<\/strong> That’s the question posed by the The Observer<\/em> and it makes for troubling reading<\/a>. If Gov. Jim Gibbons<\/strong> (R-NV) is right that tourism from California<\/strong> is the carotid artery of Nevada<\/strong>‘s economy, then the Silver State is — to put it politely — screwed. A good thing the Lege didn’t follow Midnight Jim’s advice and shut down Nevada’s outreach efforts in China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Speaking of which …<\/strong> Amidst a flurry of economic developments and positive indicators in Macao, the casinos of Stanley Ho<\/strong> are backing off the expensive VIP trade and going mass-market<\/a>. (Translation: “We’re coming after you<\/em>, Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>.”) Thanks to reader mike_ch<\/strong> for the link.<\/p>\n

Colossal buMMer<\/strong>. Breakfast has just been eliminated from the offerings at the M Resort<\/strong> buffet<\/a>. Unless one lives nearby (a relatively small clientele), M is a heckuva long detour to make for breakfast, so this economy move is understandable … but depressing all the same. No casino buffet gets higher marks from LVA<\/em> readers.<\/p>\n

That’s a bit weird<\/strong>. Stay with me here, folks. CBS<\/strong> cancels Guiding Light<\/em>, replacing it with Let’s Make a Deal<\/em>, which is shot at the Tropicana Las Vegas<\/strong>. So what should be coming to Vegas in December (at The Rio<\/strong>) but a Guiding Light<\/em> farewell tour — yes, Reva<\/strong>, Josh<\/strong> and the whole kit ‘n kaboodle. How much you wanna bet they won’t<\/em> be taking in a LMaD<\/em> taping at the Trop? The only way to make this scenario more Banquo’s Ghost<\/strong>-ly would be for the soap convention to be held at the Trop, too.<\/p>\n

P.S.<\/strong>: Better get your tickets now before the ‘Otalia’<\/strong> fans scarf them all up.<\/p>\n

Company<\/strong><\/em>. Performances resume at UNLV<\/strong> tonight and it’s a must-see<\/a>. Mind you, the Review-Journal<\/em> praises the Stephen Sondheim<\/strong> revival with faint damns<\/a>, while the Sun<\/em>‘s review reverses that formula<\/a>.
