MGM is making &#8220;only&#8221; $449 million in Macao last quarter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-08-14\/mgm-resorts-bets-on-wealthier-masses-to-catch-up-in-macau-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">but hasn&#8217;t done as well as its rivals<\/a> in recapturing once-lost VIP players.<\/p>\n<p>Said one Bloomberg analyst of <strong>MGM Cotai<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cIts focus on the mass market should help to boost margins, but there are still <!--more-->challenges in doing so because it is a late joiner.\u201d It will certainly be a gear shift for <strong>MGM China<\/strong>, which has been VIP-centric at <strong>MGM Grand Paradise<\/strong>. As for MGM&#8217;s aspirations in <strong>Japan<\/strong>, the potential revenue base just got a bit narrower, <strong>Shinzo Abe<\/strong>&#8216;s government having decided to bar 18- and 19-year-olds from gambling. They won&#8217;t be allowed to smoke or drink, either, so a trip to a casino <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2017\/08\/15\/national\/people-20-remain-subject-japans-gambling-ban-even-adult-age-lowered\/#.WZQ77a2ZO9Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">would be a colossal bummer<\/a> for that age group.<\/p>\n<p>* Perhaps having decided it&#8217;s more trouble than it&#8217;s worth, <strong>Brookfield Asset Management<\/strong> is selling the <strong>Hard Rock Hotel &amp; Casino<\/strong>. This has moved the <strong>Culinary Union<\/strong> to action, calling on the new owner to retain the entire workforce, citing a <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/HRH-LV.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/HRH-LV.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/HRH-LV-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/>long tradition of this in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, including <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong>&#8216; repurchase of itself in a 2011 bankruptcy proceeding &#8212; foregoing a chance to ratchet the payroll dramatically downwards &#8212; as well as when Station bought <strong>The Reserve<\/strong> from <strong>Craig Neilsen<\/strong>. (Workers at <strong>The Fiesta<\/strong> and the <strong>Santa Fe<\/strong> were not so lucky: Station canned them all in post-purchase purge.) Heck, Munchkin restaurant mogul\u00a0<strong>Robert Earl<\/strong> didn&#8217;t hold the <strong>Aladdin<\/strong>&#8216;s poor performance against its labor force when he bought it and reinvented as <strong>Planet Hollywood Resort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you drive by the Hard Rock about 5 p.m. and see picketing taking place, now you know what it&#8217;s about.<\/p>\n<p>* Things can only get better and better for the <strong>Tohono O&#8217;odham<\/strong> tribe and its <strong>Desert Diamond Casino<\/strong>.
