Johnson Jr<\/strong>.,\u00a0&#8220;The parties and their counsel give the case an Ali-Frazier feel.\u00a0<strong>New Jersey<\/strong> Governor <strong>Chris Christie<\/strong> versus the <strong>National Collegiate Athletic Association<\/strong> and all four major professional sports leagues (the <strong>National Basketball Association<\/strong>, the <strong>National Football League<\/strong>, the <strong>National Hockey League<\/strong> and <strong>Major League Baseball<\/strong>). Former U.S. Solicitor General <strong>Ted Olson<\/strong> versus his successor (and his principal deputy) <strong>Paul Clement<\/strong>. For Supreme Court junkies, you don&#8217;t get much closer to the Thrilla in Manila.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Congress can no more mandate that states not repeal or modify certain existing gambling laws than it can dictate <!--more-->to states how they must regulate radioactive waste or obligate state law-enforcement officers to conduct background checks,&#8221; Lin and Thomas added. The <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Stacy Papadopoulos<\/strong> piled on:\u00a0&#8220;The harm of such federal overreach is more than purely structural,&#8221; she\u00a0wrote. &#8220;Preserving a state&#8217;s autonomy to enact, enforce, modify, and repeal its own laws as it sees fit protects individual rights and promotes democratic accountability. [The <strong>Bradley Act<\/strong>&#8216;s]\u00a0effect on New Jersey&#8217;s long-running effort to legalize and regulate sports betting is a prime example of what happens when the people who are required to enforce a law are prohibited from changing that law to reflect new circumstances or evolving public opinion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>OK, they&#8217;ve persuaded me. But I doubt you could sell pay-for-view tickets to the oral arguments.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&#8216;s mob associations continue to dog him like an ineradicable odor. This week the <em>Guardian<\/em> pounced on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/aug\/16\/trumps-bid-for-sydney-casino-30-years-ago-rejected-due-to-mafia-connections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">newly classified documents<\/a> regarding\u00a0a failed <strong>Australia<\/strong> casino push. It\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/trump_gold_ap_328-300x162.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/trump_gold_ap_328-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/trump_gold_ap_328-150x81.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/trump_gold_ap_328.jpg 605w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>was rejected as being &#8220;dangerous&#8221; and &#8220;unacceptable &#8230;\u00a0the Trump <strong>mafia<\/strong> connections should exclude the Kern\/Trump consortium.&#8221; The Donald&#8217;s design concept drew praise, with terms like\u00a0\u201crich, attractive and well-integrated,\u201d and &#8220;strong public appeal&#8221; garlanded like laurels.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from Trump&#8217;s Mafia proclivities, the criticisms of his joint venture were familiar ones: exaggerated projections of casino revenues, a lack of financial viability and &#8220;the tender is not financially viable on the basis of expected returns to equity investors.\u201d In the end, Trump was deemed &#8220;unqualified&#8221; &#8230; something of an understatement when one recalls his serial failures in <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>. Just imagine how much worse the <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> bankruptcy would have been had not Trump been talked out of his desire to use real marble throughout the entire resort.<\/p>\n<p>* Staying in the Pacific Rim, the fastest-growing casino market is &#8230; the <strong>Philippines<\/strong>. An investor note from <strong>Morgan Stanley<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/philippine-casino-demand-outstrips-supply-ms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">projects a 25% growth rate<\/a> for gross gaming revenue. What&#8217;s more, <strong>Okada Manila<\/strong> is expected to leapfrog <strong>Solaire Resort &amp; Casino<\/strong> and <strong>City of Dreams Manila<\/strong>, capturing 32% of market share compared to <strong>Bloomberry Resorts<\/strong>&#8216; 30% and <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s 25%. Okada Manila had a December opening so soft that there&#8217;s was no\u00a0gambling taking place, but this doesn&#8217;t stop analysts from projecting a $1.2 billion gross by 2019. At maximum capacity it will have 500 tables and 3,000 slots.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Galaxy Entertainment<\/strong> and Melco&#8217;s designs on <strong>Japan<\/strong> may be in peril. The government of <strong>China<\/strong> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-08-18\/china-further-limits-overseas-investment-in-push-to-reduce-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">imposed an outright ban on overseas investment in gambling<\/a>, which it characterizes as an &#8220;irrational&#8221; use of capital. <strong>Morgan Stanley<\/strong>\u00a0calls it &#8220;part of the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7166\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/china-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/china-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/china-150x120.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/china.jpg 558w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>precautionary package to prevent a rebound in capital outflows. Policy makers are also concerned about the potential investment loss and financial risk related to the takeover of \u2018trophy assets,\u2019 a lesson they might have learned from corporate Japan in late 1980s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Said <strong>Zhou Hao<\/strong>, analyst with <strong>Commerzbank AG<\/strong>, &#8220;China wants its money to focus on specific sectors that can help boost long-term growth potential. The new policy also tries to close the loophole of suspicious capital outflows and possible money laundering.&#8221; This isn&#8217;t the first time someone has voiced the fear that Chinese casinos could be acting as a laundromat of cash.<\/p>\n<p>* To win at blackjack at <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Las Vegas<\/strong> you need only get to 11 &#8230; if you&#8217;re playing <strong>Easy Jack<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktnv.com\/news\/unlv-students-blackjack-variation-being-tested-on-las-vegas-strip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a new game being field-tested<\/a> while it awaits <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong> approval. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktnv.com\/news\/unlv-students-blackjack-variation-being-tested-on-las-vegas-strip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It&#8217;s a home-grown product<\/a>, developed by students at the <strong>University of Nevada Las Vegas<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Center for Gaming Innovation<\/strong>, a marvelous incubator for outside-the-box thinking.
