First off, lead investor <strong>Steven Witkoff<\/strong> and his partners plan to re-name the unfinished resort. Good idea, as &#8220;Fontainebleau&#8221; brings nothing but bad karma <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/fontainebleau-resort-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/fontainebleau-resort-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/fontainebleau-resort-150x104.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/fontainebleau-resort.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>and negative associations to anyone who frequents the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>. While Witkoff&#8217;s business plan is as yet undisclosed, <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbnews.com\/issue\/vol-15-no-85-september-4-2017\/article\/fontainebleau-bought-for-600-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">condos have been ruled out<\/a>. (Good Idea #2) <strong>Fitch Ratings<\/strong>&#8216; analyst <strong>Alex Bumazhny<\/strong> agrees with our opinion that F-blew needs mass-market pricing and an immediate start on reconstruction, writing,\u00a0\u201cProperties that are closer to <strong>MGM<\/strong> properties and <strong>Caesars<\/strong> properties tend to do better on average daily rates &#8230;\u00a0They probably want to open sooner rather than later to catch the current wave of the good economy.\u201d Even so, Witkoff is still a long way from the ribbon cutting. As for the much-needed managerial expertise, both <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> and <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> would be logical, local choices but unless you&#8217;re going to call F-blue the &#8220;Stardust,&#8221; neither has brands that would sit logically on a megaresort &#8212; you can hardly call a big, blue building &#8220;Red Rock.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>F-blew isn&#8217;t Witkoff&#8217;s first venture into Las Vegas. No, that would be <!--more-->the <strong>Africa Israel<\/strong> &#8220;failsino&#8221; at the northeast corner of <strong>Harmon Avenue<\/strong> and <strong>Koval Lane<\/strong>, land that is empty to this day. Witkoff <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-northkorea-nuclear\/south-korea-seeks-bigger-warheads-north-korean-icbm-reportedly-on-the-move-idUSKCN1BD0VW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was a minority investor<\/a> on a planned metaresort that would have taken the place of the planned <strong>W<\/strong> and <strong>Las Ramblas<\/strong> projects, neither of which got past the drawing board. That acreage came at a relative bargain &#8212; $10.4 million an acre, less than half of what Witkoff is paying for F-blue. The project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/fontainebleaus-new-owner-is-no-stranger-to-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ended as a massive write-off<\/a>, its sole souvenir being a forlorn sign that wishfully proclaims that the acreage is &#8220;intended to be used for a casino-hotel.&#8221; Keep dreaming.<\/p>\n<p>* If you think the federal government&#8217;s response to <strong>Hurricane Harvey<\/strong> has been tepid, that&#8217;s nothing to how you would feel if you were a Macanese, digging out from under <strong>Typhoon Hato<\/strong>. Anger at the government is reportedly running high, as Macao tries to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5670\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Lawrence-Ho-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Lawrence-Ho-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Lawrence-Ho-103x150.jpg 103w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Lawrence-Ho.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/>support a First World economy with Third World infrastructure. <strong>Lawrence Ho<\/strong> has emerged as something of a local hero, not only for his his financial contributions but for diverting 2,000 construction workers toward typhoon relief. &#8220;When news leaked out that one [casino] operator had called for volunteers to clean its pool rather than diverting resources to help with the relief works, it was met with a typhoon of criticisms from the local community and among its employees,&#8221; writes <strong>Desmond Lam<\/strong>. This provoked a swell of anger, expressed on the offending company&#8217;s Web pages. Adds Lam, &#8220;A key factor in corporate social responsibility concept is to find a delicate balance between corporate resources, profit objectives, and, more importantly, social expectations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* There was good news for Boyd this week, as its managerial project, <strong>Wilton Rancheria<\/strong>, saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/article170608747.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">its compact approved<\/a> by the <strong>California<\/strong> Legislature. The casino is expected to cost $400 million and hold 2,000 slots. Construction won&#8217;t start for another year and may take until mid-2020. Wrote <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong>, &#8220;it could be worth $20-30 mm of annual fee [cash flow] to BYD.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> sports books may have dodged a bullet on the Mayweather\/McGregor fight but they got blindsided\u00a0by <strong>Howard University<\/strong>, which eked out a 43-40 victory over\u00a0the <strong>University of Nevada-Las Vegas<\/strong> football team. The Rebels <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/sports\/college\/article171082627.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">didn&#8217;t help themselves<\/a> by being offside on the very first play, fumbling a ball <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3739\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/mascot-head.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/mascot-head.gif 169w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/mascot-head-150x88.gif 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/>that went for a Howard touchdown and by not getting their cheerleaders off the field in a timely fashion. Howard, a 45-point underdog, beat the spread by the largest margin in history as quarterback <strong>Caylin Newton<\/strong>, younger brother of Cam (talent runs in the family) shredded the Rebel secondary. Had you put a $100 wager on Howard to win, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/sports\/college\/article171087532.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">you&#8217;d have walked home with $55,000<\/a> in your pocket.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fontainebleau continues to make news.
