In part, Roeben says, &#8220;the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/vegasclub-pic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/vegasclub-pic2.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/vegasclub-pic2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>casinos are at a bit of a loss, and they&#8217;re trying kind of what they see working elsewhere and are hoping they will work in their establishment &#8230; To [<strong>MGM Grand<\/strong>&#8216;s] credit, they keep trying. They&#8217;re trying new things. They&#8217;ve got the virtual reality now. They&#8217;ve got a golf game that is kind of a 3-D, interactive golf game. They&#8217;re trying a lot of different things, but nothing has quite clicked yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On other topics, Roeben is more optimistic than we are about <strong>Fontainebleau<\/strong>, less so about <!--more--><strong>Resorts World Las Vegas<\/strong> and predicts that <strong>Lucky Dragon<\/strong> will be on the sale block soon. (Another acquisition for <strong>SLS Las Vegas<\/strong> buyers <strong>Meruelo Group<\/strong>?) In other news, <strong>Ghostbar<\/strong> has closed at the <strong>Palms<\/strong> and the casino portion of the <strong>Vegas Club<\/strong> has been gutted &#8212; no bad thing, that. Roeben predicts that the demolition of the of the Vegas Club&#8217;s two hotel towers, to give <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong> &#8220;a blank slate&#8221; with which to remake the terminus of <strong>Fremont Street<\/strong>. Hint: Expect swimming pools.<\/p>\n<p>* In an address to the <strong>Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2017 Japan Conference<\/strong>, <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> bowed to the inevitable and said he would &#8220;commit to being a good <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/MGM-Japan-Yokohama-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/MGM-Japan-Yokohama-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/MGM-Japan-Yokohama-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/MGM-Japan-Yokohama.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>partner to Japanese companies in a Japanese-led [megaresort] consortium.\u201d He also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/mgms-murren-hints-local-led-2025-target-for-japan-casino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pegged the opening date as being in 2025<\/a>. MGM already has a spiffy new design for the project, one each for <strong>Tokyo<\/strong>, <strong>Yokohama<\/strong> (<em>shown<\/em>) and <strong>Osaka<\/strong>. (If <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>\u00a0gets in, expect him to plop another big-ass <strong>Venetian<\/strong> on <strong>Japan<\/strong>.) Murren had reason to be confident, as media reports say Prime Minister <strong>Shinzo Abe<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Liberal Democratic Party<\/strong> has gotten the oft-recalcitrant <strong>Komeito Party<\/strong> to swing into line on the passage of the essential casino-regulation bill. However, optimism should not tip over into giddiness: A new <strong>Nomura Securities<\/strong> report sizes up the Japan market as being no larger than $7 billion a year, presuming two megaresorts.<\/p>\n<p>In other MGM news, the company is rolling the cash from its sale of <strong>MGM National Harbor<\/strong> to <strong>MGM Growth Partners<\/strong> into <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/CityCenter-monorail.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/CityCenter-monorail.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/CityCenter-monorail-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>stock repurchases. The late <strong>Kirk Kerkorian<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Tracinda Corp<\/strong>. has some to sell, as it announced it would offloading 10 million shares, taking its amount of the company down to slightly over 8%. <strong>CityCenter<\/strong> partner <strong>Dubai World<\/strong> is also in a selling mood, having dumped some 5.2 million shares last week, news that trickled out after the market closed on Friday, no doubt to the benefit of MGM&#8217;s stock price.<\/p>\n<p>* Sticking their heads firmly in the sand, major Strip operators boycotted a conference on e-sports, which makes virtual reality look like penny-ante stuff. <strong>Native American<\/strong>\u00a0casino operators dominated the crowd of 175 at <strong>Westgate Las Vegas<\/strong>. \u201cIt is <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/mikasa-battleship-2-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/mikasa-battleship-2-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/mikasa-battleship-2-150x110.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/mikasa-battleship-2-768x563.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/mikasa-battleship-2-1024x751.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/mikasa-battleship-2.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>extremely hard to turn a battleship,&#8221; conference leader <strong>Ben Fox<\/strong> remarked, alluding to the old-school mentality of the big casinos and the quicker adaptability of regional operators. At least MGM has the excuse of having already dedicated the old <strong>LAX<\/strong> space at <strong>Luxor<\/strong> to an e-sports arena but why were the supposedly with-it likes of <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> missing in action? Maybe they scorn the e-sports player because he&#8217;s too young to drink or gamble and too penurious to afford high ADRs. The <strong>Tropicana Atlantic City<\/strong> recently jacked up hotel rates for an e-sports tourney, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/esports-conference-fails-to-attract-big-las-vegas-strip-operators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> reports<\/a>, and players stayed away in droves. Ditto Trop restaurants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Downtown Grand<\/strong> CEO <strong>Seth Schorr<\/strong> pushed back against conventional wisdom saying e-sports is the coming thing and &#8220;in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14228\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Downtown-Grand.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Downtown-Grand.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Downtown-Grand-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>10 years from now is going to compete with major sports\u201d for audience appeal. While the bigger casinos wait and see, Schorr has been studying the market for two years and preparing the Downtown Grand to be a &#8220;boot camp&#8221; for the e-sports crowd.
