The <strong>House of Representatives<\/strong> version would close some <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11565\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/United_States_Capitol_west_front-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/United_States_Capitol_west_front-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/United_States_Capitol_west_front-150x77.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/United_States_Capitol_west_front.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>loopholes for deductibility of interest on growth investments. Rather than take up its argument\u00a0with the lower house, the industry &#8212; via the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/aga-pursues-full-interest-deductibility-in-tax-reform-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is making its case<\/a> to the\u00a0<strong>Senate Finance Committee<\/strong>, submitting letters to Sens. <strong>Orrin Hatch<\/strong> (R) and <strong>Ron Wyden<\/strong> (D).\u00a0\u201cIn addition to having a negative impact on economic growth, limits to interest deductibility amount to a harmful new tax on businesses that borrow to invest and grow,\u201d read the letter in part.<\/p>\n<p>Although the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> is a prominent member of the\u00a0<!--more--><strong>Businesses United for Interest &amp;\u00a0Loan Deductibility Coalition<\/strong>, AGA CEO <strong>Geoff Freeman<\/strong> stresses that many industries are represented. \u201cThe gaming industry is so vastly <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Freeman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Freeman.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Freeman-100x150.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/>different than it was in 1986 [the year of the last major tax reform] in terms of our big-business nature and in terms of our omnipresence around the country,&#8221; he added. However, since the interest-deductibility reduction is an important revenue offset, if the budgetary axe doesn&#8217;t fall there, where will land?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it will chop away the ability to deduct gambling losses from tax returns, another potential crimp on gamblers&#8217; discretionary income. Can Freeman have his cake and eat it too? This bears watching.<\/p>\n<p>* The first scapegoat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorkupstate.com\/casinos\/2017\/11\/general_manager_at_new_rivers_casino_in_schenectady_leaves_job_after_nine_months.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">has fallen<\/a> in the saga of <strong>New York State<\/strong>&#8216;s underperforming new casinos. <strong>Rivers Casino<\/strong> in <strong>Schenectady<\/strong> has rid itself of General Manager <strong>Mary Cheeks<\/strong>. According to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rivers-Schenectady-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rivers-Schenectady-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rivers-Schenectady-150x91.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Rivers-Schenectady.jpg 628w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>the company, Cheeks &#8220;has decided to pursue other opportunities outside of the company,&#8221; such as taking the blame\u00a0for Rivers&#8217; slow start. That&#8217;s an unceremonious way to treat a seven-year employee, not to mention a knee-jerk method of handling what is a region-wide problem. Assistant General Manager <strong>Justin Moore<\/strong> takes over on an interim basis but we doubt he&#8217;s going to be any more capable of fixing the problem (a paucity of customers) than was Cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>* While we&#8217;re on the subject of the Empire State, <em>S&amp;G<\/em> says &#8216;thank you&#8217; to <strong>Resorts World New York<\/strong> which, since its opening in 2011, has generated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/education\/queens-casino-pumps-2b-revenue-city-schools-article-1.3622635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$2,079,037,190 in tax dollars<\/a> for local schools. That&#8217;s enough to pay 37,000 new teachers or generate 142 million field trips &#8212; not to Resorts World, we hasten to add.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tax legislation currently before Congress has the gaming industry, well, not up in arms but decidedly concerned.
