{"id":20625,"date":"2017-11-20T08:11:11","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T16:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=20625"},"modified":"2017-11-20T08:20:48","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T16:20:48","slug":"caesars-bets-on-hoosier-tracks-trump-precedent-revisted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/caesars-bets-on-hoosier-tracks-trump-precedent-revisted\/","title":{"rendered":"Caesars bets on Hoosier tracks; Trump precedent revisted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Centaur Gaming<\/strong>, benefactor of <strong>Mike Pence<\/strong> (not that it did them any good), is back in the news. <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> already owns the two most lucrative casinos in <strong>Indiana<\/strong>, is doubling down on its commitment to the Hoosier State. <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbnews.com\/issue\/vol-15-no-96-november-20-2017\/article\/caesars-buying-two-indiana-racinos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">By acquiring Centaur&#8217;s two racinos<\/a>, <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13755\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse.jpg 241w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse-150x130.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/>Caesars gains a mid-Indiana presence, one with room to grow. Before moving on to bigger things, Pence made it clear during the last round of gaming legislation that he didn&#8217;t want table games at the racinos. Should they become eligible for tables in 2021, Centaur&#8217;s revenue has room to grow. The company is paying $1.7 billion for the two tracks, a figure that denotes a great deal of optimism for their cash flow (as much as $25 million a year with table games added). The duo already banks $401 million a year in slot revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Caesars <a href=\"https:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2017\/nov\/16\/caesars-buying-centaur-holdings-adding-2-indiana-c\/?_ga=2.248984711.1272960759.1510932880-1087563971.1503320768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is paying a sizeable premium<\/a> for Centaur&#8217;s assets &#8212; over 10X cash flow, so CEO <strong>Mark Frissora<\/strong> may <!--more-->be picking up where spendthrift predecessor <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> left off. At the very least, he&#8217;s clearly hoping players at Indiana Grand and Hoosier Downs sign up for Total Rewards, rack up mega points and head to Indianapolis&#8217; nearby airport, to cash them in in Sin City.<\/p>\n<p>As for Frissora&#8217;s ventures farther afield, they may be paying off in <strong>Brazil<\/strong>. Pro-casino Federal Deputy <strong>Herculano Passos<\/strong> says he has &#8220;the necessary votes&#8221; to pass enabling legislations. If he&#8217;s right, expect Caesars to be one of the first companies across the transom.<\/p>\n<p>* Hell hath no fury like a <strong>British Airways<\/strong> passenger ignored. Fliers to <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> had their peace of mind disrupted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/4941319\/british-airways-plane-buzz-london-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a loud rasping, buzzing noise that went on and off<\/a>, every fifteen minutes. If that wasn&#8217;t enough to get on one&#8217;s nerves, oxygen masks accidentally deployed in-flight. As is so often the case, the airline was basically unapologetic. &#8220;We apologised for a temporary issue with our public announcement system that affected a small number of customers on a flight last month which was quickly resolved. [Not to hear passengers tell it!] Our highly trained cabin crew also reassured customers after a single set of oxygen masks deployed accidentally,&#8221; British Airways told <em>The Sun<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> finds himself back in the gaming news, thanks to a 1993 lawsuit filed against him by a gambler seeking to recover losses <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6602\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Trump-face-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Trump-face-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Trump-face-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Trump-face.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>incurred while intoxicated. <strong>Supreme Court<\/strong> Justice &#8220;<strong>Slammin&#8217; Sammy&#8221; Alito<\/strong>, then on the <strong>Third Circuit Court<\/strong>, ruled in Trump&#8217;s favor. \u201cState courts had not extended dram shop liability beyond injuries from drunk driving and barroom accidents and brawls, and [<strong>New Jersey<\/strong>] had intensely regulated casinos without imposing liability for allowing gambling by intoxicated patrons,\u201d Alito ruled. He added, \u201csober gamblers can play well yet lose big, [and] intoxicated gamblers can still win big.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Czech casino owner <strong>Leon Tsoukernik<\/strong> is suing <strong>Aria<\/strong> for gambling incurred while allegedly under the influence and might have a chance <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ARIA-Resort-inside-small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ARIA-Resort-inside-small.jpg 290w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ARIA-Resort-inside-small-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/>because, unlike the Garden State, <strong>Nevada<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t have dram-shop liability. However, Silver State gambling regulations\u00a0prohibit serving &#8220;visibly intoxicated&#8221; casino patrons, so it becomes a question of whether gaming regulations trump (pardon the pun) state la. The plaintiff puts his losses &#8220;in excess of $10 million.&#8221; Perhaps Tsoukernik will take his case to the <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong> if loses in court. In whatever event, how stupid to you have to be to gamble while you&#8217;re blotto? Pretty damned stupid, I reckon.<\/p>\n<p>* It&#8217;s &#8220;no&#8221; again to an additional casino in <strong>Cedar Rapids<\/strong>. Gaming regulators looked at three proposals and decided there was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcci.com\/article\/gaming-commission-to-vote-on-3-casino-proposals\/13785791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">too much cannibalization in them thar cornfields.<\/a> In a repeat of a 2014 scenario, the <strong>Iowa Gaming Commission<\/strong> nixed expansion. Left out in the cold again was <strong>Cedar Rapids Development Group<\/strong>, joined this time by the <strong>Wild Rose<\/strong> franchise, which had hoped its boutique-casino proposal would be small enough to pass muster. No such luck.<\/p>\n<p>* What would have happened if the newly expanded <strong>Ho-Chunk Casino<\/strong> in <strong>Wittenberg<\/strong>, <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong>, had been blocked by the courts? It&#8217;s a moot question, for the tribe has been dismissed from the lawsuit brought by the <strong>Stockbridge-Munsee Community<\/strong>. So now the Ho-Chunk <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wausaudailyherald.com\/story\/news\/2017\/11\/16\/ho-chunk-casino-wittenberg-expansion-adds-gaming-hotel-restaurant\/849746001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">have a shiny (sorta) new casino<\/a> and the Stockbridge-Munsee can only gnash their teeth in impotent fury.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Centaur Gaming, benefactor of Mike Pence (not that it did them any good), is back in the news.
