{"id":20701,"date":"2017-12-04T09:32:45","date_gmt":"2017-12-04T17:32:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=20701"},"modified":"2017-12-04T09:32:45","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T17:32:45","slug":"senators-have-hissy-fit-vegas-back-to-normal-or-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/senators-have-hissy-fit-vegas-back-to-normal-or-not\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators have hissy fit; Vegas: Back to normal or not?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> having joined the roster of <strong>Internet<\/strong>-gambling jurisdictions, Sens. <strong>Dianne Feinstein<\/strong> (D) and <strong>Lindsey Graham<\/strong> (R) are <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/letters-comments\/362612-senators-press-for-deputy-ag-to-review-online-gambling-opinion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">pushing the panic button<\/a>, hard. In a concession to the reality that the Senate won&#8217;t be able to rewrite the <strong>Wire Act<\/strong>, they&#8217;re <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Feinstein.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Feinstein.jpg 144w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Feinstein-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/>asking for the <strong>Department of Justice<\/strong> to intervene by unilaterally reversing its 2011 opinion, which opened the &#8216;Net to U.S. casinos. \u201cInternet gambling takes gambling too far. It preys on children and society\u2019s most vulnerable,\u201d wailed Feinstein and Graham, making a familiar &#8212; and groundless &#8212; case. \u201cOnline casinos are already opening across state lines pursuant to compacts and states are contemplating opening up their online casinos to foreign markets.\u201d Oh, the horror! According to <em>The Hill<\/em>, the senators reiterated their 2011 high dudgeon that &#8220;allowing online gambling could turn every smartphone, tablet and personal computer into an around-the-clock casino.&#8221; Yes, God forbid anyone should be allowed personal liberty in this country.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General <strong>Jeff Sessions<\/strong>, during his confirmation hearings, made a <em>pro forma<\/em> promise to have another look at the Wire Act. However, he has subsequently <!--more-->found more pressing things to do.\u00a0&#8220;Concerns about the proliferation of online gambling are bipartisan and span the political spectrum,&#8221; scribbled Graham and Feinstein. Do they? Really? We&#8217;ve not seen much evidence of that. The senatorial duo wants Internet gambling placed under Congress&#8217; remit but the recent performance of lawmakers on <strong>Capitol Hill<\/strong> gives us no confidence that they can be trusted with anything so important.<\/p>\n<p>* If things are looking up for locals casinos in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/strip-loses-locals-joints-win-aristocrat-hooks-big-fish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October&#8217;s gaming grosses<\/a>), it&#8217;s at least partly due to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/california\/la-me-lopez-vegas-transplants-20171203-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an influx of tax refugees<\/a> from <strong>California<\/strong>. Says one,\u00a0\u201cWe doubled the size of our house and lowered our mortgage payment.\u201d Adds another,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s easier to live here and have a comfortable lifestyle.\u201d Companies like <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> and <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> hear that and think <em>KA-CHING<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>* &#8220;Vegas is a state of mind as much as it is a physical destination,&#8221; writes <em>New York Times<\/em> columnist <strong>Mike Seely<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/01\/travel\/las-vegas-after-shooting.html?emc=edit_tl_20171201&amp;nl=travel-dispatch&amp;nl_art=&amp;nlid=15322375&amp;ref=headline&amp;te=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">assessing the post-10\/1 state<\/a> of Sin City. He describes the perfume of America&#8217;s fun capital as &#8220;a singularly pungent bouquet of cologne, cigarette smoke, steak and sewage,&#8221; which tells you more about Seely&#8217;s mindset than about Las Vegas. Dental worker <strong>Ren\u00e9e McKinley<\/strong> had a similarly negative view of her hometown until she <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12994\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Mandalay-Bay-pic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Mandalay-Bay-pic.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Mandalay-Bay-pic-150x103.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>saw the massive outpouring of support for the victims of <strong>Stephen Paddock<\/strong>&#8216;s shooting spree.\u00a0\u201cThe way our community stepped up, it proved me wrong,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re comforted to read that there&#8217;s a heightened security presence at <strong>Mandalay Bay<\/strong> these days (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/21\/us\/vegas-shooting-lawsuits.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">too late to stave off litigation<\/a>), even though the recent <strong>Bellagio<\/strong> robbery seemed to betray a supine crisis-prevention attitude at <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>. Not everyone shares the positive mindset. Observes one <strong>Elvis Presley<\/strong> impersonator.\u00a0\u201cPeople are just angry.\u00a0I think it\u2019s because of \u00a0[<strong>Donald<\/strong>] <strong>Trump<\/strong>. It\u2019s exhausting.\u201d Former<br \/>\nMandalay Bay guests are seen taking their business to <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> now and even local GOP hangout <strong>Stoney&#8217;s Rockin&#8217; Country<\/strong> is checking customers for firearms. Hotel rates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelweekly.com\/Travel-News\/Hotel-News\/Las-Vegas-shooting-results-in-fewer-visitors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">are in a funk<\/a>. So, even though the <em>NYT<\/em> tries to sell a &#8220;back to normal&#8221; premise, the article tells quite a different, shell-shocked story.<\/p>\n<p>On a more positive note, a recent benefit concert for shooting victims brought out a star-studded lineup. Held at <strong>T-Mobile Arena<\/strong>, the event featured Strip entertainers ranging from the sublime (<strong>Elton John<\/strong>) to the ridiculous (<strong>Carrot Top<\/strong>). \u00a0Even baseball&#8217;s <strong>Bryce Harper<\/strong> was part of the proceedings. The &#8220;Vegas Strong&#8221; concert was a joint effort of MGM and <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>, and we thank them and look forward to further such cooperation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Lawrence_Ho_Melco.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>* <strong>Japan<\/strong> hasn&#8217;t done more than vaguely legalize casinos at this point but <strong>Lawrence Ho<\/strong> isn&#8217;t waiting. The <strong>Melco<\/strong> CEO has announced the theme of his $10 billion-plus megaresort pitch: &#8220;City of the Future.&#8221; It would, Ho said, be the most state-of-the-art casino on the planet. Given Ho&#8217;s impressive track record, we&#8217;re inclined to believe him.<\/p>\n<p>* Pressure on the Trump administration to approve a third tribal casino in <strong>Connecticut<\/strong> has just risen a bit. Rep. <strong>John B. Larson<\/strong> (D) is calling for the <strong>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/strong> to approve the <strong>Foxwoods<\/strong>\/<strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> satellite casino in <strong>East Windsor<\/strong>, excusing his tardiness in intervening on the grounds that he was too busy fighting current tax legislation &#8212; which could, in itself, have ramifications for gaming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With Pennsylvania having joined the roster of Internet-gambling jurisdictions, Sens.
