Last month they were <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/HarrahsJoliet.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>down 2.5% statewide($108.5 million). Taking a closer look, two riverboats were responsible for most of the malaise: <strong>Hollywood Aurora<\/strong> ($9 million), down 9%, and <strong>Casino Queen<\/strong> in <strong>East St. Louis<\/strong> ($7.5 million), plummeting 11.5%. Top dog <strong>Rivers Casino<\/strong> was absolutely flat with last year, grossing $34 million and &#8212; reversing a long stretch of misfortune &#8212; <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Par-A-Dice<\/strong> was up 3%, to gross $6 million. The <strong>Joliet<\/strong> market was solid, with <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Empress Joliet<\/strong> ($9.5 million) up a percentage point, as was <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Joliet<\/strong>, grossing almost $15 million. <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Grand Victoria<\/strong> grossed $12.5 million but fell nearly 5%.<\/p>\n<p>Further south, <strong>Jumer&#8217;s Casino Rock Island<\/strong> took in $5.5 million, down <!--more-->4%. Penn&#8217;s <strong>Argosy Belle<\/strong> lost 5%, grossing $3.5 million. <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Metropolis<\/strong> was off 2.5%, for $6 million, rounding out a rather &#8220;blah&#8221; month in the Land of Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>* Business was quite a bit better in <strong>Ohio<\/strong>, up 8% for a $142.5 million gross. Leading the pack was table-less <strong>Hard Rock Rocksino<\/strong>, up 8% to $19 million. <strong>Jack Cleveland<\/strong> had an unusually good month, up 8% to $17 million, but <strong>Thistledown<\/strong> was off 2.5%, for $9.5 <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Thistledown.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Thistledown.jpg 278w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Thistledown-150x98.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/>million. <strong>Dan Gilbert<\/strong>&#8216;s other casino, in <strong>Cincinnati<\/strong>, rose 4.5% to $16 million. <strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Scioto Downs<\/strong> vaulted 12% to $13 million while <strong>Miami Valley Gaming<\/strong> rose 8% to almost $12 million and <strong>Belterra Park<\/strong> grossed $6.5 million on a 12% ascent. As for the quartet of Penn National\/<strong>GLPI<\/strong> properties, <strong>Hollywood Toledo<\/strong> jumped 10% to $16 million and <strong>Hollywood Columbus<\/strong> leapt was up 5.5%, to $17.5 million. <strong>Hollywood Dayton<\/strong> ($8 million, +15%) and <strong>Hollywood Austintown<\/strong> (9%, +12%) continue to outperform, generating $273\/slot\/day and $280\/slot\/day respectively.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Add <strong>Johnstown<\/strong> to the list of <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> cities &#8212; including <strong>Reading<\/strong> &#8212; that will be vying for a satellite casino.\u00a0City Councilwoman <strong>Marie Mock<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribdem.com\/news\/councilwoman-city-should-roll-the-dice-on-gambling\/article_b34c9a68-db06-11e7-956f-9fcdfbb0a010.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">put the idea forward<\/a> this week, saying,\u00a0\u201cNothing ventured, nothing gained.\u00a0I think Johnstown should do whatever it can to generate revenue.\u00a0If it creates jobs, I\u2019m for it. If it creates revenue, I\u2019m for it. We have to try. We have to do something.&#8221; Hardly a ringing endorsement but at least it&#8217;s a starting place for discussion. Operators currently not in Pennsylvania won&#8217;t be able to bid until <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Pennsylvania-064-300x219.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Pennsylvania-064-300x219.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Pennsylvania-064-150x109.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Pennsylvania-064.gif 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>next Aug. 31, giving extant Keystone State casinos an eight-month free run at the new markets. (The two miniature resort-casinos would only have the month of July in which to bid.)<\/p>\n<p>A bid of $7.5 million gets you 40 table games (valuable because of their lower tax rate), while you have to pony up another $2.5 million for slots. If you explicitly <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> want a casino in your back yard, your city has only until New Year&#8217;s Eve to disqualify itself. While Johnstown is mulling its bet, Reading, equidistant from <strong>Sands Bethlehem<\/strong> and <strong>Penn National Race Course<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/news.worldcasinodirectory.com\/pennsylvania-city-issues-satellite-casino-request-51642\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported to be all in<\/a>. Meanwhile, there&#8217;s been a stampede of 201 cities and towns to opt out of the casino-application process, which suggests the idea isn&#8217;t going over as well as hoped. City Councilman\u00a0 <strong>John Slifko<\/strong> (R) offered a more enthusiastic version of Mock&#8217;s rationale, saying,\u00a0\u201cWith gambling facilities, there are always negatives but the positives far outweigh them.\u00a0This is an opportunity to help with the revitalization of downtown. Gambling is going to go somewhere; we might as well have it here and reap some of the good aspects.\u201d Amen to that.<\/p>\n<p>* Score one for <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> CEO <strong>Mark Frissora<\/strong>: His purchase of <strong>Centaur Gaming<\/strong> took advantage of an obscure loophole in <strong>Indiana<\/strong> law, circumventing antitrust rules. Casino operators can own no more than two casinos &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldbulletin.com\/news\/state-still-awaiting-application-for-centuar-gaming-sale-to-caesars\/article_627e0dd2-daa3-11e7-a3a3-638d8eee3e32.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">but racinos are exempt from the limit<\/a>. Competitors must be gnashing their teeth and saying, &#8220;Why didn&#8217;t I think of that?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* If MGM gets <strong>Connecticut<\/strong> solons to revisit tribal exclusivity, <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> and <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/fox61.com\/2017\/12\/06\/tribes-want-to-be-part-of-any-potential-casino-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">want seats at the table<\/a> &#8230; as well they might. Has it occurred to MGM CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> that he might be a catspaw of the Mohicans and Mashantucket Pequots, who would tolerate a breach of exclusivity if it got them out of their revenue-sharing obligations to the Nutmeg State?<\/p>\n<p>* Casino CEOs, put <strong>Crete<\/strong>, <strong>Santorini<\/strong> and <strong>Mykonos<\/strong> on your itinerary: The government of <strong>Greece<\/strong> is looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/greece-could-soon-allow-casinos-in-major-tourism-destinations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an expansion of gaming<\/a>. You&#8217;ll have to beat off extant Grecian operators and, since the biggest current casino has only 700 slots, you&#8217;ve got a chance to &#8216;Wow&#8217; legislators with your Vegas-style visions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Illinois casinos have never recovered from the double-whammy of the Great Recession and a smoking band, and now they have to contend with slot routes.
