{"id":20850,"date":"2017-12-29T10:52:57","date_gmt":"2017-12-29T18:52:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=20850"},"modified":"2017-12-29T10:53:42","modified_gmt":"2017-12-29T18:53:42","slug":"strips-thanksgiving-turkey-sports-betting-overhyped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/strips-thanksgiving-turkey-sports-betting-overhyped\/","title":{"rendered":"Strip&#8217;s Thanksgiving turkey; Sports betting overhyped?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite a neutral calendar (i.e., same number of weekend days) and a 2% increase in baccarat\u00a0wagers, the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> managed to plummet 25% in table game win, pulling <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Roulette-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Roulette-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Roulette-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Roulette.jpg 455w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>overall revenue 6% downward. Had it not been for that game, the Strip would have been only 2.5% off last year&#8217;s pace. The house was damned unlucky at table games, seeing 17% less win ($210 million), inclusive of baccarat, on flat wagering. Overall, Strip winnings were 6%, helped somewhat by a 5% increase at the slots ($270 million) on 3% more coin-in. The most dramatic gains were out in the sticks, with <strong>Elko<\/strong> ($23.5 million) up 12% and <strong>Carson Valley<\/strong> ($9 million) gaining 11%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Downtown<\/strong> was still as good as gold, up 7% ($54 million) and <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong> ($24 million) gained 2.5%. The <strong>Boulder Strip<\/strong> ($73 million) was flat and <!--more-->miscellaneous <strong>Clark County<\/strong> ($95.5 million) was down 2%. <strong>Laughlin<\/strong> was up 5% to $42 million. <strong>Reno<\/strong> was flat ($46 million) and <strong>Lake Tahoe<\/strong> down 3% ($15.5 million). It&#8217;s such a pity that the <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong> no longer breaks out\u00a0winnings and losses from <strong>Wendover<\/strong>, the most reliable economic barometer in the Silver State. When Wendover catches a cold, Nevada gets pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0According to <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em>, the Trump administration is <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/article\/powers-behind-the-throne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">putting a Native American face<\/a> on the offices that handle aboriginal affairs. Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the <strong>Interior Department<\/strong> is\u00a0<strong>Tara MacLean Sweeney<\/strong>, an\u00a0Inupiaq and the first Alaskan to hold that post. New director of the <strong>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/strong> is Cherokee <strong>Bryan Rice<\/strong>, a governmental veteran, while <strong>Kiowa Tribe<\/strong> member\u00a0<strong>John Tahsuda III<\/strong> is acting assistant secretary at Interior. With so many Native Americans in positions of influence one has cause for optimism that Trump&#8217;s government will be as enlightened on tribal gaming as the Obama one was (and the Bush II one wasn&#8217;t).<\/p>\n<p>* Things may not be going according to plan at <strong>Lucky Dragon Casino<\/strong> but that&#8217;s not <strong>Matt Harkness<\/strong>&#8216; worry any longer. He&#8217;s been tapped for what must be <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/article\/people-to-watch-2018-part-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of the most coveted positions in gaming<\/a>: CEO of <strong>Hard Rock Casino Atlantic City<\/strong>. Ironically, he once was an executive <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-20852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/harkness-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/harkness-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/harkness-108x150.jpg 108w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/harkness.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/>at <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong>, the skeleton upon which the Hard Rock flesh is being sculpted. (He was also general manager at abysmal <strong>Trump Plaza<\/strong> but we won&#8217;t hold that against him.) Harkness opines that &#8220;people tend to overemphasize the decline without necessarily understanding that this is still an extremely viable market. <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> is very well located in terms of proximity to major population areas and it has the great benefit of a more competitive tax rate on gaming revenue than in surrounding states. This is a direct benefit to both the city and the market.\u201d Harkness, who has helped six casinos open, promises &#8220;a lot of surprises&#8221; accompanying Hard Rock&#8217;s debut. <em>Global Gaming Business<\/em> has him on its &#8220;People to Watch&#8221; for 2018 and we only wonder why he didn&#8217;t lead the list.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> ad campaigns that aired just before and after the 10\/1 tragedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/las-vegas-switches-gears-for-2017-marketing-strategies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get panned<\/a> by <strong>Casino.org<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Samantha Beckett<\/strong>. A short-lived <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> splash, <em>Welcome to the Show<\/em> &#8220;was a yawning, clich\u00e9d, and very pleased-with-itself social media <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12994\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Mandalay-Bay-pic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Mandalay-Bay-pic.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Mandalay-Bay-pic-150x103.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>and TV campaign &#8230; More likely, the \u201choly sh*t\u201d business suddenly took on a dark meaning that was never intended, but that would forever be echoed after the <strong>Mandalay Bay<\/strong> shootout that took the lives on [<em>sic<\/em>] 58 and injured more than 500.&#8221; As for the <strong>Las Vegas Convention &amp; Visitors Authority<\/strong>&#8216;s attempt to be relevant &#8220;looked like a compilation of <strong>Facebook<\/strong> images put to one of that social media\u2019s low-tech algorithm pseudo-videos.&#8221; But a special circle of Hell was reserved for MGM and <strong>Andre Agassi<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>#VegasStrong<\/em> spot, which polled as \u201cWorst All-Around Casino Marketing\u201d for 2017. Ouch! Somebody just took a pin a stuck it in Leo the Lion&#8217;s posterior.<\/p>\n<p>* Add <strong>Delaware<\/strong> to the list of states chomping at the bid to legalize sports betting. Says the state&#8217;s finance director, <strong>Rick Geisenberger<\/strong>, &#8220;We\u2019re working to roll it out as quickly as possible.\u201d One reason why Delaware could be first to market is that it already has a lame sort of sports-betting regime in place that allows you to make parlay bets on football <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13103\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Delaware-leg-hall-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Delaware-leg-hall-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Delaware-leg-hall-150x92.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Delaware-leg-hall.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>games. It&#8217;s not much but it&#8217;s something, which is more than 48 states can say. Also, Delaware is one of the states that has embraced <strong>DFS<\/strong>. While the state may see it as a potential bonanza,\u00a0<strong>Dover Downs<\/strong> CEO <strong>Denis McGlynn<\/strong> is\u00a0skeptical, \u00a0saying\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s a lot of sizzle but no steak.\u00a0Sports betting in Las Vegas only makes up about 2 percent of their casinos&#8217; total revenue and they have a monopoly right now.&#8221; At present, Delaware casinos only get a 40% cut of the parlay bets. Worse still, out-of-state bettors would likely stay home if they can have a fiddle on sports wagering in their own state. That&#8217;s part of why McGlynn is rooting against <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> in its <strong>Supreme Court<\/strong> fight. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delawareonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2017\/12\/26\/delaware-could-win-race-offer-sports-betting\/976040001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">In a rare display of executive candor<\/a>, he says, &#8220;it&#8217;s better for us to keep our monopoly on what he have.&#8221; At best, if New Jersey wins, Delaware will have a small window of opportunity as nearby states build sports betting from the ground up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite a neutral calendar (i.e., same number of weekend days) and a 2% increase in baccarat\u00a0wagers, the Las Vegas Strip managed to plummet 25% in table game win, pulling overall revenue 6% downward.
