Give him credit, though, for raising the defunct megaresort&#8217;s value: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-01-08\/atlantic-city-s-failed-revel-casino-sells-for-200-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">The $200 million sale price<\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14318\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/revel_0606-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/revel_0606-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/revel_0606-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/revel_0606.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>means he&#8217;ll pocket a tidy $118 million profit, minus the cost of capex improvements. Not only does Revel have a new owner, it also has a new name: <strong>Ocean Resort Casino<\/strong>. The buyer is <strong>Colorado<\/strong> mogul <strong>Bruce Deifik<\/strong>, who intends to have the property on line by summertime (might we suggest he accelerate the process by hiring a casino-management company?). According to <em>Bloomberg<\/em>, &#8220;Deifik said he planned to add an Asian noodle bar and a high-end players\u2019 club.&#8221; (Has he been studying the downfall of <strong>Lucky Dragon Casino<\/strong>?)<\/p>\n<p>In a parting shot at outgoing Gov. <strong>Chris Christie<\/strong> (R), Straub said,\u00a0\u201cI hope the newly elected governor, and <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> officials, will reject the <!--more-->anti-business and anti-job creation attitude of the prior governor.\u201d Straub also reiterated that he wasn&#8217;t going anywhere, renewing his expression of interest in <strong>Boardwalk Hall<\/strong> and <strong>Bader Field<\/strong>. Since the sale of Revel renders his lawsuit against the state moot &#8212; Straub didn&#8217;t want to have to apply for a gaming license &#8212; it would be interesting to see his creativity applied to a a non-gaming attraction, of which Atlantic City has too few.<\/p>\n<p>Deifik has earmarked an additional $175 million for upgrades to Revel\/Ocean, which will face some tough market challenges, including the lack of a player database or a brand <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14314\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_0947-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_0947-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_0947-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_0947.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>name, to say nothing of the fact it will be going up against <strong>Hard Rock Atlantic City<\/strong>, which has arguably &#8212; but not very &#8212; the best brand name in gaming. Still,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s like having Christmas in January. This is a sign to the market that Atlantic City is well on her way back the prominence that she once had,\u201d said new Mayor <strong>Frank Gilliam<\/strong> (D).\u00a0<strong>Rummy Pandit<\/strong>, executive director of the <strong>Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality &amp; Tourism<\/strong> at <strong>Stockton University<\/strong>, added that Revel\/Ocean brings two things of which Atlantic City is short: hotel rooms (1,399) and parking spaces (7,657).<\/p>\n<p>Sounding a note of caution was <strong>Fitch Ratings<\/strong> Director <strong>Colin Mansfield<\/strong>, who told <em>The Press of Atlantic City<\/em>, &#8220;There is a healthy level of profitability when it comes to gross gaming revenues. The market is in a good spot. The introduction of two properties is not great for Atlantic City.\u201d We&#8217;ll see where the chips fall next summer.<\/p>\n<p>* Need proof Hard Rock&#8217;s brand-name value? Look to <strong>Iowa<\/strong>, where <strong>Hard Rock Casino<\/strong> gained 13.5%, for a $9 million gross. In good news for <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong>, its two Iowa properties, <strong>Diamond Jo Worth<\/strong> and <strong>Diamond Jo Dubuque<\/strong>, generated $12 million in gross gaming revenue, up 6.5% y\/y. <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> also had to be licking its chops as soon-to-be-owned <strong>Ameristar Council Bluffs<\/strong> grossed $15 million, a 2.5% gain.<\/p>\n<p>* There was also good news for <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, which JP Morgan analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> proclaimed &#8220;represents the gaming sector\u2019s most attractive risk\/reward for 2018, as it is now the best absolute value play in gaming after the sector\u2019s sizable 2017 <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Bellagio-300-02-285x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Bellagio-300-02-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Bellagio-300-02-142x150.jpg 142w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Bellagio-300-02.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/>moves.&#8221; If you&#8217;re an MGM exec, what&#8217;s not to like about a corporate tax levy that&#8217;s expected to fall from $175 million last year to $30 million this year and the next? Still, Greff noted, &#8220;we believe investor expectations are reasonably low \u2013 we\u2019d say almost negative, but probably more in the &#8216;I don\u2019t give a hoot&#8217; camp.&#8221; He argues that &#8220;what matters more is if MGM can meet or slightly exceed what we describe as pretty low bars. We think so.&#8221; He deemed <strong>Bellagio<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>MGM Grand<\/strong> the company&#8217;s &#8220;crown jewels&#8221; and its cash flow &#8220;cheap on an absolute basis.&#8221; Convention bookings, MGM&#8217;s bread and butter, &#8220;remain strong&#8221; while &#8220;we believe expectations are reasonable for the pace of the recovery post the tragic shooting, with <strong>Mandalay Bay<\/strong>\/the south part of the strip recovering more slowly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Effectively trying to bribe major-league sports into accepting betting on their events, <strong>Indiana<\/strong> state Rep. <strong>Alan Morrison<\/strong> has introduced a bill that would juice them into 20% of gross revenues. It&#8217;s a bizarre proposal and <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> President <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Geoff-Freeman-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Geoff-Freeman-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Geoff-Freeman-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Geoff-Freeman.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Geoff Freeman<\/strong> wasted no time in taking aim at it. \u201cWhile we applaud Representative Morrison\u2019s efforts to bring legal, transparent sports betting to Indiana, handing sports leagues 20 percent of what&#8217;s left over after winnings are paid out, undercuts its economic viability. Doing so will ensure the illegal market continues to thrive in the state, and gut the tax revenues available to fund essential public services.
