{"id":21023,"date":"2018-01-29T08:10:12","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T16:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=21023"},"modified":"2018-01-29T12:46:46","modified_gmt":"2018-01-29T20:46:46","slug":"wynn-the-fallout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wynn-the-fallout\/","title":{"rendered":"Wynn: The fallout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s still early in the apparent downfall of <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong> but already there&#8217;s heated pressure being put on <a href=\"http:\/\/theweek.com\/speedreads\/751586\/steve-wynn-resigned-rnc-finance-chair-fox-news-wants-know-when-democrats-return-wynns-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">both Democrats and Republicans<\/a> to disown his largesse. Rep. <strong>Karen Handel<\/strong> (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/steve-wynn-fallout-ripples-as-republicans-seek-distance-1517188851\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was out in front<\/a>, giving <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5122174\/steve-wynn-contribution-donations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$2,700\u00a0Wynnbucks<\/a> to &#8220;a charity in her district that helps <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/wynn_feature-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/wynn_feature-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/wynn_feature-150x81.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/wynn_feature.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse,&#8221; according to her office. Speaker of the House <strong>Paul Ryan<\/strong> (R) was close behind, promising a $1,ooo donation would go to a nonprofit instead. And that&#8217;s just the beginning. (Donations from Mrs. Wynn, <strong>Andrea Hissom<\/strong>, are being kept.) For time time being, <strong>Nevada<\/strong> Sen. <strong>Dean Heller<\/strong> (R) is hiding his head in the sand &#8212; presumably hoping the matter will go away. Nursing a one-point lead over challenger Rep.\u00a0<strong>Jacky Rosen<\/strong> (D),\u00a0he is probably loath to unilaterally disarm. A senator Wynn hasn&#8217;t lavished cash upon, <strong>Susan Collins<\/strong> (R), stated \u201cI don\u2019t even think it\u2019s a close call to return the money.\u00a0They\u2019re very serious allegations, and should be treated as such.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wynn was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/01\/27\/steve-wynn-resign-rnc-finance-chair-sexual-misconduct-accusations-373768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">out on his ass<\/a> as <strong>Republican National Committee<\/strong> finance chairman within hours of the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>&#8216;s bombshell story, which exposed Wynn (in more senses than one) as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/dozens-of-people-recount-pattern-of-sexual-misconduct-by-las-vegas-mogul-steve-wynn-1516985953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a serial sexual predator<\/a>. <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/news\/politics-and-government\/fallout-continues-over-steve-wynn-sexual-misconduct-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tried to reframe the narrative<\/a> around the <em>WSJ<\/em>&#8216;s reportorial tactics, emphasizing, <!--more-->according to the loyal <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em>, &#8220;current and former employees\u2019s complaints that they have been repeatedly called at home and on their personal cellphones, and that reporters have come to their homes and the homes of family members and friends multiple times, even after the reporters have been told they don\u2019t want to speak with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It also clung to the beyond-laughable contention that <strong>Elaine Wynn<\/strong> orchestrated the <em>WSJ<\/em>&#8216;s reporting, writing and publication of the story. Hell mayhap no fury like a woman <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Elaine-Wynn-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Elaine-Wynn-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Elaine-Wynn-98x150.jpg 98w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Elaine-Wynn-675x1024.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Elaine-Wynn.jpg 744w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/>scorned &#8212; but not <em>that<\/em> much. Meanwhile, on the business front, <strong>Union Gaming Group<\/strong> analyst <strong>Grant Govertsen<\/strong> reported investors deserting <strong>Wynn Macau<\/strong> stock in favor of <strong>Sands China<\/strong> and <strong>Galaxy Entertainment<\/strong>. On <strong>Wall Street<\/strong>, <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> noted a potential overhang for WYNN shares, citing <strong>Nevada<\/strong> and <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> investigations, adding &#8220;such allegations can\u2019t be helpful to WYNN in competitive integrated resort licenses\/development globally (e.g., <strong>Japan<\/strong>) and\/or in gaming license renewals (<strong>Macau<\/strong>, Nevada) &#8230;\u00a0Given the quantum of allegations made in the <em>WSJ<\/em> article, but only handful that were referred to with specificity in the article, there\u00a0could be additional new reports of similar allegations.\u00a0 This can\u2019t be helpful for the stock.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Greff then got to the crux of the issue: &#8220;A scenario where WYNN doesn\u2019t have Steve as a CEO is not good for the company. We have always held the belief that WYNN possesses the single largest individual CEO dependency versus any of the other 30 gaming and lodging companies our coverage universe (well, maybe [<strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong>]\u00a0with CEO <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> is tie with WYNN) &#8230;\u00a0A WYNN\u00a0without Steve likely sees some valuation multiple contraction, and obviously, some of this was factored into the stock price <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1514822408\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Friday<\/span><\/span>.&#8221; In plain English, WYNN without Wynn is ripe for the plucking.<\/p>\n<p>Adds <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong>, &#8220;if Mr. Wynn were to step down, something we aren\u2019t about to speculate on, we do believe there would be an impact, over time, on the operations of the Company and we believe the design and development of future Company projects would lack the meticulous attention to detail the current portfolio is renowned for. On the latter point around development, we believe these project nuances have paved the way Mr. Wynn\u2019s properties to consistently garner meaningful fair share performance in nearly every competitive market Mr. Wynn has entered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Wynn_BG1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Wynn_BG1.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Wynn_BG1-150x108.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>UltraViolet<\/strong> co-founder\u00a0<strong>Nita Chaudhary<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbnews.com\/issue\/vol-16-no-4-january-29-2018\/article\/wynn-implicated-as-wynn-west-planned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">would like nothing better<\/a>\u00a0than to see him go\u00a0\u201cSteve Wynn needs to go,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He is a predator of the worst kind who used his position of power to sexually coerce his female employees.&#8221; <em>VitalVegas<\/em> also weighed in on <em>l&#8217;affaire Wynn<\/em> with <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalvegas.com\/steve-wynn-sexual-misconduct-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a particularly damning editorial<\/a> that minced no words.<\/p>\n<p>As for Trump&#8217;s ongoing relationship with <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, which goes through alternating phases of love and hate, a piece in <em>The Atlantic<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2018\/01\/trump-wynn\/551693\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reprises some of its ups and downs<\/a>, depicting Wynn not as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Galt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>John Galt<\/strong><\/a> he sees himself but as a weaselly sycophant to the president, whom he has not blushed <a href=\"http:\/\/ktla.com\/2018\/01\/27\/steve-wynn-speaks-about-accepting-rnc-position-at-trumps-request-during-recent-mar-a-lago-fundraiser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">to compare to<\/a> <strong>Abraham Lincoln<\/strong>. And to think that, just a week ago, Wynn was riding high on the announcements of <strong>Wynn West<\/strong> and a <strong>Wynn\u00a0Palace<\/strong>\u00a0expansion. \u201cWhat we are going to do across the street [at Wynn West] is going to go rather quickly because I have been giving it thought for a long time,\u201d he told investors.
