Baccarat tore a hole through gaming receipts, with the house plunging 30% on 9% less wagering. Non-baccarat table <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Strip.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Strip.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Strip-150x109.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>games fared much better, up 7.5%. A slight increase in coin-in was enough to propel slot revenues up 6%. (Tighter holds helped.) Locals casinos saw flat slot revenue on 4% more coin-in but table game\u00a0wagers were 6.5% higher, leading to 12% greater win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Downtown<\/strong> fared far better, up 10% ($47 million), while <strong>Laughlin<\/strong> grew 11% ($31 million). The <strong>Boulder Strip<\/strong> ($47 million) was flat, <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong> leapt 16% ($20 million) and miscellaneous <strong>Clark County<\/strong> ($93 million) was a percentage point higher. <strong>Lake Tahoe<\/strong> ($18.5 million) was also <!--more-->down a point but <strong>Reno<\/strong> ($55.5 million) was 10% up. Even the sticks were booming, with <strong>Carson Valley<\/strong> 10% higher ($9 million) and <strong>Elko<\/strong> soaring 23% to $24.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>* \u201cWe know that secondhand smoke is not beneficial to your health, and at the same time, having a facility where people can smoke at a casino is beneficial for revenue,\u201d said <strong>Tom Swoik<\/strong>, executive director of the <strong>Illinois Casino Gambling Association<\/strong>, outlining the dilemma faced by casinos. \u201cWe do know &#8230; that the more time someone spends on the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Illinois.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Illinois.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Illinois-150x149.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>casino floor, they more likely they are to keep playing. If they have to go outside to smoke, they\u2019re more likely to light up and then leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swoik is pushing <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-smoking-casinos\/effect-of-illinois-smoke-free-law-on-casino-revenue-is-topic-of-dispute-idUKKBN1FI1YT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">against a new study<\/a> that argues that <strong>Illinois<\/strong> gaming houses suffered little or no economic impact from the state&#8217;s smoking ban. The <strong>National Bureau of Economic Research<\/strong> contends that Illinois casino admissions were in a steady decline since 2000. Never mind that, in the first quarter following the <strong>Smoke-Free Illinois Act<\/strong>, casino receipts in the Land of Lincoln fell 20% while <strong>Indiana<\/strong> went up 11% and 5.5% in <strong>Missouri<\/strong>. The bureau tries to palm the negative effect on the simultaneous Great Recession and on slot routes in Illinois. Color us unconvinced.<\/p>\n<p>* Why are table games taxed at such a more favorable rate than slots in <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>? One reason is their volatility. Case in point: <strong>Presque Isle Downs<\/strong>, which saw table revenues fall 20.5% in December, thanks largely to one player who cleaned up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goerie.com\/news\/20180129\/table-games-revenue-tumbles-in-december-at-presque-isle-downs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">to the tune of $200,000<\/a>.
