For a while it was looking as though <strong>MGM Grand Cotai<\/strong> wouldn&#8217;t make it out of the starting blocks in time for Chinese New Year. However, the megaresort opened yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/mgm-resorts-intl-macau-casino\/mgm-resorts-opens-3-4-billion-casino-in-macau-as-revenues-boom-idINKBN1FW2O4?il=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with room to spare<\/a> before the all-important holiday. Architecturally the most striking of all the Macanese casinos, MGM now has to prove itself in the business department, especially after being hobbled by a governmental allocation of only 125 table games, plus 52 imported from the peninsula. (MGM can draw on the supply at <strong>MGM Grand Paradise<\/strong>, but that&#8217;s a limited pool of 427 tables.) With 1,972 rooms, Grand Cotai triples MGM&#8217;s inventory of hotel rooms in the enclave and, in the frills department, boasts 28 <strong>Qing Dynasty<\/strong> carpets as part of its decor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on the numbers we are seeing, the reservations we have got, it was very important for us to open before [Chinese New Year],\u201d <strong>MGM China<\/strong> CEO <strong>Grant Bowie<\/strong>. The dam holding back the charges of sexual misconduct against Wynn has clearly burst and there&#8217;s no restraining the freshet now.<\/p>\n<p>Wynn also got a kick in the pants from the <strong>Boston Rape Crisis Center<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2018\/02\/08\/nonprofit-dont-name-everett-casino-after-steve-wynn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which implored the state<\/a> that it shouldn&#8217;t be\u00a0\u201cstuck with a monument to a man forced out of his job due to multiple allegations of sexual assault.\u201d It lumped Wynn with <strong>Larry Nassar<\/strong> and <strong>Harvey Weinstein<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cWe are at a tipping point in how our culture responds to sexual harassment <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21165\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Steve_wynn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Steve_wynn.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Steve_wynn-150x122.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>and assault. <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> has an important opportunity to show leadership by demanding that the companies who do business here are held accountable when they look the other way in response to reports of workplace sexual harassment and abuse,\u201d said Executive Director <strong>Gina Scaramella<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/barcc.org\/blog\/details\/statement-barcc-calls-on-state-leadership-to-prevent-naming-of-casino-after\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">in a formal statement<\/a>.\u201cForcing Wynn\u2019s name from this project will not undo the damage caused by decades of sexual assault.\u00a0But we have a choice. Let\u2019s insist on community accountability.\u201d The broadside was directed at the <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong>, Gov. <strong>Charlie Baker<\/strong> (R) and Attorney General <strong>Maura Healey<\/strong>, Wynn Resorts evidently having been determined to be a lost cause.<\/p>\n<p>* &#8220;I realize there are communities around the Commonwealth that don\u2019t want casinos near their communities. I understand that perspective. But for those of us that already have a casino, let us decide for ourselves,&#8221; wrote <strong>Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> President <strong>Brent Cooper<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/opinion\/contributors\/2018\/02\/12\/opinion-time-kentucky-reconsider-gaming\/309290002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">in a powerful stemwinder<\/a> imploring that the Bluegrass State be allowed to vote on the issue. He pointed out, with the advent of casinos in <strong>Ohio<\/strong>, 1.2 million Kentuckians were within 20 minutes&#8217; drive of a casino &#8212; a situation worsened when the <strong>Paducah<\/strong>, <strong>Illinois<\/strong>, and <strong>Ashland<\/strong>, <strong>West Virginia<\/strong>, markets are taken into account. &#8220;If you want proof, visit the parking lots of casinos in <strong>Indiana<\/strong>, Ohio, <strong>Missouri<\/strong>, Illinois, West Virginia and <strong>Tennessee<\/strong> [<em>sic<\/em>], and count the number of <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> license plates,&#8221; Cooper added. In light of proposed cuts to education funding and state services, it becomes imperative to consider casinos, he argues.
