Most of this was driven &#8212; one is tempted to say &#8220;of course&#8221; &#8212; by <strong>MGM National Harbor<\/strong>, vaulting 15.5% for an almost <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/maryland-live.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/maryland-live.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/maryland-live-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>$58 million gross. While it grossed an eye-popping average of $1.7 million\/day upon opening, now it is up to $1.9 million\/day. National Harbor, which represented 40% of Free State market share, did it mostly on highly taxed slots ($30 million) instead of low-tax table games ($27.5 million). <strong>Maryland Live<\/strong> hung in there with a 3% increase and 32.5% market share, on a gross of $47 million. Even <strong>Hollywood Perryville<\/strong> ($7 million) was up 7%. Things look a mite bleak for <strong>Horseshoe Baltimore<\/strong>, down 11.5% and clinging to a 15% market share, grossing $22 million. <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Ocean Park<\/strong> ($5.5 million) continued to be powered by the addition of table games, up 15.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Over in <strong>West Virginia<\/strong>, the worst of the bleeding has been stanched. <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Charles Town<\/strong> racino served as a proxy for <!--more-->the entire state, whose numbers it paralleled: 1% down at the slots and 6% off at the tables. The tax picture looked worse for Maryland Live than National Harbor, with slots up 9% and tables dow 7%. MGM, by the way, is doing mind-boggling slot business: $374\/slot\/day. Only a few casinos in the country, like Penn&#8217;s <strong>Plainridge Park<\/strong> can rival that.<\/p>\n<p>* Another of those rare exceptions is <strong>Hollywood Mahoning<\/strong> <strong>Valley<\/strong> in <strong>Ohio<\/strong>, where Penn pulls in $339\/win\/slot\/day.\u00a0Buckeye State casinos <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Columbus-exterior-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Columbus-exterior-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Columbus-exterior-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Columbus-exterior.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>and racinos had a bonny month overall, up 5%. Slots made all the difference, as table revenue was down 9%. Of the Penn quartet, <strong>Hollywood Columbus<\/strong> grossed $19 million (+3%), while <strong>Hollywood Toledo<\/strong> was close behind with $18 million (+2%). <strong>Hollywood Dayton<\/strong> surpassed analyst expectations with $9 million (+10) and in <strong>Austintown<\/strong> Penn grossed $10.5 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Scioto Downs<\/strong> also had a robust month, grossing $15.5 million for a 12% increase. <strong>Belterra Park<\/strong>&#8216;s numbers ($7 million) continue to creep toward respectability, up 4%. In terms of revenue <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Thistledown.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Thistledown.jpg 278w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Thistledown-150x98.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/>growth, <strong>Dan Gilbert<\/strong> did best at <strong>Jack Thistledown<\/strong>, up 11.5% to $11 million. <strong>Jack Cleveland<\/strong> slipped 4.5% to just below $17 million, but <strong>Jack Cincinnati<\/strong> was up 1.5% to $17.5 million. Far and away the top performer was soon-to-be-MGM <strong>Hard Rock Rocksino<\/strong>, grossing $23 million for a 10%. Whoever the new management is, we have simple advice: Don&#8217;t mess with success.<\/p>\n<p>* There are few things <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/06\/arts\/how-carrot-top-wins-in-vegas-yes-he-can-be-funny.html?emc=edit_th_180507&amp;nl=todaysheadlines&amp;nlid=153223750507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">as frightening in the morning<\/a> as a <em>New York Times<\/em> profile of <strong>Carrot Top<\/strong>. The Gray Lady delves into his baffling <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> success and finds &#8220;a far more ambitious performer than he gets credit for, an innovator in the shameless pursuit of cheap, sometimes questionable, laughs.&#8221; His secret weapon: sound design. Concludes the <em>NYT<\/em>, &#8220;If you wanted to do a deep dive into the politics of Carrot Top, there\u2019s plenty to work with. After all, he is an orange-haired buffoon who became famous in the 1980s and remains popular despite being sneered at by the elite media.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> maintains there is an &#8220;insatiable&#8221; appetite for <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20047\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sands-Macao-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sands-Macao-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sands-Macao-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Sands-Macao.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>hotel rooms in <strong>Macao<\/strong> and bookings for upcoming Labour Day weekend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/more-visitors-hotel-guests-on-labour-day-break-macau-govt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bear him out<\/a>.
