The company made a point of <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TROPICANA-VIEW-1B_LO-042010-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TROPICANA-VIEW-1B_LO-042010-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TROPICANA-VIEW-1B_LO-042010-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/TROPICANA-VIEW-1B_LO-042010.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>lauding them during this week&#8217;s earnings call, with <strong>JP Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> characterizing their performance &#8212; along with that of <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Zia Park<\/strong> &#8212; as &#8220;solid&#8221; and <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong> reporting that\u00a0 they &#8220;experienced property records as marketing refinements drove meaningful margin enhancements.&#8221; Back East, Penn is nailing down sites for its two satellite casinos in <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>, from which it expects to achieve an impressive <!--more-->15% ROI. Penn predicted the Trop, <strong>Plainridge Park<\/strong>, its <strong>Ohio<\/strong> racinos and its <strong>Kansas City<\/strong> casino would outperform through the balance of the year. No word, however, on the postponed (canceled?) phase two of Tropicana renovations.<\/p>\n<p>* 2Q18 was &#8220;the quarter most having been waiting for&#8221; from <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong>, according to Santarelli. Why? Boyd &#8220;delivered its strongest quarter in some time.&#8221; Its <strong>Valley Forge Resort Casino<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-15478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/California-old-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/California-old-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/California-old-150x118.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/California-old-1024x811.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/California-old.jpg 1212w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>and <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>-related acquisitions are expected to close by year&#8217;s end. The Midwest and South properties are &#8220;poised to benefit from a strong consumer trends across most markets, furthered by continued marketing initiatives.&#8221; And the <strong>Downtown<\/strong> properties, Boyd&#8217;s heart and soul, have weathered everything <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> could throw at them, including disruption from <strong>Project Neon<\/strong> and <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong>&#8216; construction activity, not to mention the temporary closure of the <strong>California Hotel<\/strong>&#8216;s rooms.<\/p>\n<p>For Greff, Boyd was &#8220;executing on all fronts.&#8221; Downtown was only &#8220;in line&#8221; with projections but for <strong>Wall Street<\/strong>\u00a0that was a victory. Other Las Vegas properties posted 11% higher cash flow than last year. Greff wrote, &#8220;All three downtown properties <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/samstown-pic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/samstown-pic2.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/samstown-pic2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>recorded double-digit revenue and adjusted\u00a0[cash flow] growth, and the California Hotel and Casino benefited from recent renovations. Visitation to Downtown Las Vegas remains strong, driven by recent property improvements, as well as new projects and amenities, and results were partially offset by significantly &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eastward, results from <strong>Illinois<\/strong> slot routes are starting to trickle in (the acquisition closed late in the quarter) and <strong>Blue Chip<\/strong> is handling competition from <strong>Four Winds Casino<\/strong> better than expected. Anticipated cannibalization is $7 million-$8 million, no longer $12 million-$15 million.<\/p>\n<p>* Now that <strong>Geoff Freeman<\/strong> has cleaned out his desk at the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong>, his five-year tenure is playing to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Freeman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Freeman.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Freeman-100x150.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/>mostly rave reviews. There are, however, dissenters. (<a href=\"https:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/article\/aga-the-future-is-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We&#8217;re looking at you<\/a>, <strong>Jan Jones Blackhurst<\/strong>.) Also, now that tribal gambling engenders more revenue than private-sector casinos and gaming is reeling from the <strong>#MeToo<\/strong> movement, it continues to be a glaring oversight that the CEO search committee contains only one tribal member and no women at all.<\/p>\n<p>* As <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> suddenly covets the <strong>North Korea<\/strong> market, <strong>Frank Legato<\/strong> is inspired to <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/article\/statues-stamps-and-tyrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some particularly amusing satire<\/a>.
