Few companies can match our 40 plus years of experience in sports wagering, our significant sports betting infrastructure here in <strong>Nevada<\/strong> and our growing geographical <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6232\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/boyd-gaming-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"80\" \/>footprint across the country,\u201d said CEO <strong>Keith Smith<\/strong> about new <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> sports books in <strong>Shreveport<\/strong>, <strong>Biloxi<\/strong> and <strong>Valley Forge<\/strong>. What <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/boyd-gaming-preparing-to-expand-sports-betting-into-more-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smith knew and gaming analysts didn&#8217;t<\/a> was that Boyd was about to act as the distributor of sports betting for <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> and <strong>GVC<\/strong> in a new joint venture between the latter two companies. MGM and GVC &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/mgm-in-talks-with-sports-betting-company-about-joint-venture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who will both put $100 million into the kitty<\/a> &#8212; will piggyback off Boyd&#8217;s casinos (as well as MGM&#8217;s own), thereby gaining access to <strong>Illinois<\/strong>, <strong>Indiana<\/strong>, <strong>Iowa<\/strong>, <strong>Kansas<\/strong>, <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>, <strong>Missouri<\/strong>, <strong>Ohio<\/strong> and <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong> gave the joint venture a rave review, writing <!--more-->that &#8220;GVC will bring its technological expertise, while MGM will provide 15 state licenses, thanks to the partnership with BYD, and a database of ~30 mm potential customers via <strong>M Life<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0\u201cFrom MGM\u2019s perspective, the deal looks to be primarily about gaining a technology and operational partner for sports betting and online casino and poker in the U.S. market as more states roll those products out,\u201d added <strong>Internet<\/strong>-gambling expert <strong>Chris Grove<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jefferies<\/strong> gaming analyst <strong>David Katz<\/strong> thought the deal may have been born of necessity, writing,\u00a0\u201cA large bookmaking enterprise <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-22176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MGM-Resorts-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MGM-Resorts-1.jpg 277w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MGM-Resorts-1-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/>may be a lot more complicated than MGM thought.&#8221; If it&#8217;s a win-win for GVC and MGM it&#8217;s a win-win-win for Boyd, which gets to participate in the action without having to put up any equity, nor have to bear any of the consequences if the deal goes south. While the company remains in an expansionist mode, Smith downplayed the possibility of <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>-area acquisitions, citing high for-sale prices.<\/p>\n<p>* Gaming pundits won&#8217;t have <strong>Dover Downs<\/strong> CEO <strong>Denis McGlynn<\/strong> to kick around anymore. The racino has been sold to <strong>Twin River Worldwide Holdings<\/strong>, best known for its two <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong> casinos but also possessor of the ex-<strong>Hard Rock Biloxi<\/strong> and a racetrack in <strong>Colorado<\/strong>. Between new, broader sports-betting rules <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dover-Downs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dover-Downs.jpg 282w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dover-Downs-150x95.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/>at Dover Downs and a comparably recent tax break, the racino was an attractive takeover candidate. The parties to the deal are characterizing it as a merger but we know who&#8217;ll be calling the shots. Once the deal closes, the combined company will go public.<\/p>\n<p>Said McGlynn, \u201cBecoming part of Twin River will be transformational for us. [I&#8217;ll bet!] It will make for a more stable, stand-alone entity that will invest in our people, our marketing program and our facilities so we can compete at the highest levels &#8230; We\u2019ve been operating bare bones for years. But we\u2019ll have to see down the road what the synergies are.\u201d State Sen. <strong>Brian Bushweller<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/rhode-islands-twin-river-to-buy-dover-downs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">threw shade on McGlynn<\/a>, saying the acquisition was a case of &#8220;merging Dover Downs with a larger organization that I think can bring a lot of stability, creativity and a bright future to Dover Downs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For its part, Twin River promised reinvestment in Dover Downs. Spokeswoman <strong>Patti Doyle<\/strong> also said \u201cThe expertise that Dover Downs has in sports wagering is going to be of value to us as we prepare to launch that amenity in Rhode Island in the fall. The expertise that Dover Downs has in the online gaming sector may be leveraged in other properties.\u201d It&#8217;s another win-win scenario in a week that&#8217;s been full of them.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong> is going to get his wish. The <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong> is set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2018\/07\/26\/gaming-commission-puts-off-consideration-brockton-casino\/sfjJgNs8it6UXdQ01a6maM\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to take another look<\/a> at putting a casino in <strong>Brockton<\/strong>. Ominously for the stalled <strong>Mashpee Wampanoags<\/strong>, the MGC will reconsider the situation in the southeastern region, promised a casino in the enabling legislation but still without one. <strong>Encore Boston Harbor<\/strong> is absent from the agenda but the MGC has given itself until autumn to resolve that issue.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Greenwood Gaming &amp; Entertainment<\/strong> got run out of <strong>Carlisle<\/strong>, <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>, and\u00a0received a frosty reception when asking <strong>South Middleton<\/strong> to reverse itself on hosting a casino. The <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-15715\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-300x178.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-150x89.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_.png 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>criticisms were predictable ones but the voices of support include <strong>Union Fire Co<\/strong>. Chief <strong>Dave Weaver<\/strong>, who said, &#8220;We can only be taxed so much. It&#8217;s time we think outside of the box to ease the tax burden.&#8221; According to <em>PennLive<\/em>, <strong>Parx Casino<\/strong> CEO <strong>Tony Ricci<\/strong> promised &#8220;$2 million revenue that would be split between the township and <strong>Cumberland County<\/strong>, an additional $250,000 in supplemental funding, 250 jobs with an average salary of $42,000, and synergies created with area businesses.&#8221; It remains to be seen whether township leaders find that a sufficiently\u00a0enticing\u00a0case to reverse their earlier decision.<\/p>\n<p>* Leaders of a pro-casino ballot question in <strong>Arkansas<\/strong> came up way short in their collection of valid signatures. They needed\u00a084,859 and the Secretary of State&#8217;s office was able to certify only\u00a070,054. <strong>Driving Arkansas Forward<\/strong>, as the initiative is called, will be given another month to make good on its signature-collection quest. The goal is to legalize racinos in <strong>Hot Springs<\/strong> and <strong>West Memphis<\/strong>, as well as create two new casinos in <strong>Pope County<\/strong> and <strong>Jefferson County<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe are in an envious position when it comes to this growth opportunity.
