But the same-store <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/borgata_exterior_sunset-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/borgata_exterior_sunset-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/borgata_exterior_sunset-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/borgata_exterior_sunset.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>comparison (i.e., minus <strong>Hard Rock Atlantic City<\/strong> and <strong>Ocean Resort<\/strong>) has the city down 9.5%. The haul was just over $272 million, with slots up 9% and table games 14% higher overall. For the older casinos, it was 10.5% less at the one-armed bandits but 14.5% more at the tables. At <strong>Borgata<\/strong>, which was 7% down despite holding its own at the tables, slot revenue fell 10% on 5.5% less coin-in.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> trio was down, on average, 12%, with only <strong>Bally&#8217;s<\/strong> offering <!--more-->sports betting and that starting only on July 30, too late to have a material impact. Ocean Resort was the winner at the sports books, averaging $33,000 a day against Borgata&#8217;s $18,000. PR flack <strong>Zack Hall<\/strong> spun the numbers as &#8220;<strong>New Jersey<\/strong> scores big in <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10885\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Revel.jpg-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Revel.jpg-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Revel.jpg-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Revel.jpg.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>first full month of sports betting,&#8221; while the new kid on the gaming-analyst block, <strong>Cameron McKnight<\/strong> responded &#8220;Slow start in New Jersey not a surprise.&#8221; In the battle of the pundits, Hall argued that wagers increased &#8220;dramatically&#8221; in June (not a difficult achievement, considering how few books were open that month), with <strong>PlayNJ.com<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Dustin Gouker<\/strong> adding,\u00a0\u201cThe underlying data points are impressive\u00a0&#8230; And it\u2019s important to remember that this is the industry\u2019s infancy. A mature, fully established New Jersey sports betting market could field billions of dollars in annual wagers.\u201d (<strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/atlantic\/index.ssf\/2018\/08\/resorts_casino_set_to_start_taking_in-person_sport.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">launched<\/a> its <strong>DraftKings<\/strong>-branded sports book at noon today.)<\/p>\n<p>The statewide numbers also reflect a month of business from <strong>Monmouth Park<\/strong> and a fortnight from <strong>Meadowlands Racetrack<\/strong>. The latter&#8217;s <strong>FanDuel<\/strong>-branded book led all, with\u00a0$43,790 per day. Added McKnight, &#8220;This is well below the $47.29 annual per capita spend we\u2019re estimating for New Jersey in our market model, and $33.31 for the US market overall. It\u2019s clearly early days, with sports betting in New Jersey only live for 47 days, mobile apps only rolled out in the past month, and a seasonally slow sports calendar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for <strong>Internet<\/strong> gambling, it rose 14% to $26 million, the 45th consecutive month of growth. Top dog <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong>, powered <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6769\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>by the\u00a0Golden Nugget, <strong>Betfair<\/strong> and <strong>SugarHouse<\/strong> brands, grossed over $9 million, while Hard Rock Atlantic City and Ocean Resort came out of the starting blocks with\u00a0$329,650 and\u00a0$249,805. Noteworthy market shares were Golden Nugget (36%), Borgata (19%), Resorts (15%) and <strong>Tropicana Atlantic City<\/strong> (13%).<\/p>\n<p>As for terrestrial gaming, McKnight estimates that Borgata lost 5% of market share, Tropicana ceded 3% and the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tropicana_havana.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tropicana_havana.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tropicana_havana-150x117.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Roman empire yielded 3% to the newcomers. Ocean Resort&#8217;s hot start cooled a bit, as it grossed $16 million last month\u00a0(tables $3 million-plus, slots $12.5 million) but Hard Rock kept at a fierce clip, grossing $32.5 million (tables $10.5\u00a0million, slots $22. million) despite the handicap of one less weekend day.<\/p>\n<p>No incumbent casino was revenue-positive for July although Golden Nugget weathered it best, down 3% to $20 million. As for <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7762\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Harrahs-AC_2-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Harrahs-AC_2-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Harrahs-AC_2-103x150.jpg 103w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Harrahs-AC_2.jpg 692w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/>the Caesars properties, <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Resort<\/strong> took the hardest hit, falling 14% to $31.5 million, while <strong>Caesars Atlantic City<\/strong> slid 10% to $29.5 million and Bally&#8217;s stumbled 10% to $20.5 million. Ocean Resort had the indignity of falling behind perennial laggard Resorts Atlantic City, which grossed $18 million despite a 13% falloff. <strong>Bruce Deifik<\/strong>&#8216;s going to have to do better than that if he&#8217;s going to achieve his stated goal of dethroning the Trop. Speaking of which Tropicana Atlantic City ($34 million) managed to hold onto second place, slipping 10% in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Gaming pundits opined that these salad days in Atlantic City are unlikely to last.\u00a0\u201cI expect the numbers to be up.\u00a0But, I don\u2019t see positive outside of July and August,\u201d opined Boardwalk veteran <strong>Steve Norton<\/strong>. With <strong>Cassandra<\/strong>-like precision, Norton predicted <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-21551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Hard-Rock-Atlantic-City-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Hard-Rock-Atlantic-City-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Hard-Rock-Atlantic-City-150x76.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Hard-Rock-Atlantic-City.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>the 10% surge before it had been announced, &#8220;because of the combination of the casino openings plus legalized sports betting and a mid-week holiday,&#8221; reported <em>The Press of Atlantic City<\/em>. His Rx for the seaside city is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/press\/casinos_tourism\/july-will-be-good-for-atlantic-city-casinos-future-uncertain\/article_8c0e376a-2d1a-5097-99d9-d4e6ab46d6ff.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more Millennials from nearby markets<\/a> plus an infusion of tourists from the Southeast and Southwest. (Good luck with that.)\u00a0\u201cAtlantic City needs to change its method of business. Until we get some new markets, we\u2019re going to get curiosity seekers and little more,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n<p>The doom-and-gloom outlook was handled by former Bally&#8217;s exec <strong>Wayne Schaffel<\/strong>, who said that if July&#8217;s\u00a0increase wasn&#8217;t \u201cat least 15 percent, somebody\u2019s not going to make it.\u201d However, unlike Norton, he undershot the mark when predicted the surge, pegging it between 6% and 8%.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Detroit<\/strong> was flat last month at all properties save <strong>Jack <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1386\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/Greektown1-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/Greektown1-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/Greektown1-150x91.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/Greektown1.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Greektown<\/strong> (<em>pictured<\/em>), up 2%. <strong>MGM Grand Detroit<\/strong> laughed off competition, grossing $51 million, while <strong>MotorCity<\/strong> posted $40.5 million and Greektown took in $28 million.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Plainridge Park<\/strong> slipped a bit last month, with revenue down 2% on 4.5% less coin-in. The racino still managed a more-than-impressive $391 win\/slot\/day.<\/p>\n<p>* Speaking of slots, <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> numbers are in and, except for <strong>Valley Forge<\/strong> which gained 5% ($7.5 million), everyone was flat or <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/harrahs-chester-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/harrahs-chester-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/harrahs-chester-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/harrahs-chester.jpg 587w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>revenue-negative. The former category includes <strong>Parx Casino<\/strong> ($35 million), <strong>Presque Isle Downs<\/strong> ($10.5 million), <strong>Rivers Casino<\/strong> ($24.5 million) and <strong>SugarHouse<\/strong> ($15 million). Taking various hits were <strong>Mount Airy<\/strong> (-10.5%, $13 million), <strong>Hollywood Casino<\/strong> (-7%, $17 million), <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> (-9%, $17 million), <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Philadelphia<\/strong>\u00a0(-2%, $16.5 million), <strong>The Meadows<\/strong> (-3%, $19 million), <strong>Sands Bethlehem<\/strong> (-2.5%, $26 million) and <strong>Lady Luck Nemacolin<\/strong> (-6%, $3 million).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the face of it, the news from Atlantic City is good: Gambling revenues were up 10% last month.
