Not only was Sen. <strong>John McCain<\/strong> (R) an avid craps player and <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/mccain.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/mccain.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/mccain-117x150.jpg 117w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>boxing patron (the man who coined the phrase &#8220;human cockfighting&#8221; to describe the <strong>UFC<\/strong>), he was also the co-author of the <strong>Indian Gaming Regulatory Act<\/strong>. This was a piece of Reagan-era legislation whose ramifications are still being felt very powerfully today. It sowed the seeds for what would grow into a $30 billion-plus industry, with no end of gaming-fueled prosperity in sight. McCain came down on the wrong side of tribal rights once or twice: One thinks of the <strong>Keep the Promise Act<\/strong>, aimed at preventing <strong>Arizona<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Tohono O&#8217;odham Tribe<\/strong> from opening a casino in <strong>Scottsdale<\/strong>, but IGRA outdoes the accomplishments of, say, <strong>William Harrah<\/strong>, <strong>Sam Boyd<\/strong> and <strong>Howard Hughes<\/strong> all rolled together. Gaming and tribal rights have lost a great friend an American, leaving a void that will not soon be filled.
