It&#8217;s likely the collection will be kept intact, not <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-22389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Titanic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Titanic.jpg 262w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Titanic-150x110.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/>dispersed to the four winds, although the latter might be the more lucrative course to steer. Bidders include filmmaker <strong>James Cameron<\/strong>, who is presently being topped by would-be owner <strong>Daoping Bao<\/strong>, a Chinese fund that already owns $2 million of Premier&#8217;s debt. Premier promises to keep the collection in one piece, although that may be out of its hands. (One imagines that Cameron, given his <em>Titanic<\/em> fixation, would do the same.) The Bao consortium includes <strong>Apollo Management<\/strong>, the private-equity fund that has created so much mischief in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Could Bao break up the collection? \u201cAnything\u2019s possible,\u201d said <!--more--><strong>Alta Fundamental Advisers<\/strong> partner <strong>Gilbert Lee<\/strong>. Bao is ready to plunk down $19.5, as opposed to $19 million from Cameron, a consortium of British museums and <em>National Geographic<\/em>. \u201cThese relics belong at home in <strong>Belfast<\/strong> and at <strong>Greenwich<\/strong>, in the hands <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Sinking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Sinking.jpg 271w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Sinking-150x103.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/>of an organization that can ensure these artifacts will be around forever,\u201d said <strong>Robert Ballard<\/strong>, the man who found the <em>Titanic<\/em> and we should hope his moral authority (he has opposed harvesting the wreck) carries some weight with the bankruptcy court. Regardless of the destiny of <em>Titanic<\/em> artifacts, dare we hope that Premier&#8217;s present troubles (brought about by incautious expansion) mark the end of the gruesome <em>Bodies<\/em> exhibit at Luxor? It&#8217;s a casino whose prevailing theme is death. As long as <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> is rethinking some of its Strip properties, it might want to make Luxor less funereal.<\/p>\n<p>* While on the subject of <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> sightseeing, Sin City is now home to the world&#8217;s largest bong, a 24-foot pipe so large one must take an elevator to the mouthpiece. (Going up to get high?) The record-breaking bong can hold 100 gallons of water and a quarter-pound of loco weed &#8212; giving new meaning to the term &#8220;quarter-pounder.&#8221; Quickly nicknamed &#8220;Bongzilla,&#8221; the <strong>Fremont Street<\/strong> attraction is the creation of glass artist <strong>Jason Harris<\/strong>: \u201cLas Vegas will be the new <strong>Amsterdam<\/strong> of the world. I see it as a big lighthouse and beacon that says, \u2018Just smoke me.\u2019\u201d Not so fast.<\/p>\n<p>Public consumption of cannabis isn&#8217;t legal in <strong>Nevada<\/strong>. Not yet, anyway. Even so, tax collections from marijuana sales in the Silver State <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/nation\/la-na-largest-bong-vegas-20180831-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">far overshot projections<\/a>, bringing in $70 million. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12876\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Tick-Segerblom-248x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Tick-Segerblom-248x300.jpg 248w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Tick-Segerblom-124x150.jpg 124w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Tick-Segerblom.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/>That translates into $530 million in total sales. Look out gaming &#8212; here comes an entirely different kind of &#8216;toke.&#8217; Bongzilla already has some prominent boosters, including Mayor <strong>Carolyn Goodman<\/strong> (D) and state Sen. <strong>Tick Segerblom<\/strong> (D, <em>right<\/em>), an avowed stoner who&#8217;s pushing legislation that would make toking on Bongzilla more than a pipe dream.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races<\/strong> was set for a Saturday opening of its sports book but <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>, chomping at the bit, started taking wagers last Thursday. The <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-22391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/barrett_jason-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/barrett_jason-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/barrett_jason-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/barrett_jason.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>highest-ranking official Penn could wrangle to place the ceremonial first bet was Delegate <strong>Jason Barrett<\/strong> (D), who put down $50 on the <strong>Mountaineers<\/strong>. Barrett couldn&#8217;t resist patting himself on the back, saying, \u201cWe have really done it right in this state and certainly <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> and others, if it\u2019s going to be successful in their states, they need to look at what we did and model after us.\u201d He&#8217;s right, at least as far as the sensible 10% tax rate is concerned. Tax-revenue projections are all over the map, from $5.5 million to $9 million, even $17 million. <strong>The Greenbrier<\/strong> will be the next sports book to be licensed, with <strong>Mountaineer Racetrack &amp; Casino<\/strong> bringing up the rear. Oh well, Mountaineer was always an underachiever.<\/p>\n<p>As for the continuing pushback against sports-betting ads, <strong>Australia<\/strong> has banned them from live streams of sporting events\u00a05 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. They&#8217;re already verboten on live coverage of games on radio and TV. <strong>Australia Communications &amp; Media Authority<\/strong> Chairwoman <strong>Nerida O&#8217;Loughlin<\/strong> said, &#8220;This brings online services in line with television and radio broadcasting services. It creates a safe zone for children and families to watch live sport across a variety of platforms.\u201d There is <a href=\"https:\/\/calvinayre.com\/2018\/08\/31\/business\/australia-bans-gambling-ads-online-live-sports-broadcasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a complex series of exceptions<\/a> but the overriding message is clear: The government wants to see fewer gambling ads on its TV screen or computer monitor.<\/p>\n<p>* In a totally counterintuitive move, <strong>U.S.<\/strong> and <strong>Macao<\/strong> companies are flocking to <strong>Athens<\/strong> in hopes of landing a megaresort concession. This is despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelmanagement.net\/own\/global-gaming-brands-eye-athens-for-new-casino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">a 50% falloff in terrestrial gambling revenues<\/a> since 2008, as\u00a0Grecians show an increasing preference <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-22392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Parthenon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Parthenon.jpg 268w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Parthenon-150x105.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/>for Internet gambling. Companies manifesting interest\u00a0are\u00a0<strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>, <strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong>, <strong>Mohegan Gaming &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>, <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> and <strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>. And why not? Whoever wins the bidding process gets a 30-year license. You won&#8217;t find that kind of &#8216;job security&#8217; in Macao. Speaking of Greece, how could the <strong>American Film Institute<\/strong> leave <em>The Guns of Navarone<\/em> off its &#8216;100 Best&#8217; list?
