{"id":22409,"date":"2018-09-11T08:46:53","date_gmt":"2018-09-11T16:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=22409"},"modified":"2018-09-11T08:46:53","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T16:46:53","slug":"project-first-light-dims-once-and-future-horseshoe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/project-first-light-dims-once-and-future-horseshoe\/","title":{"rendered":"Project First Light dims; Once and future Horseshoe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After much hemming and hawing, the Trump administration finally came down off the fence on the <strong>Mashpee Wampanoag<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Project First Light<\/strong> casino, saying <a href=\"https:\/\/m.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2018\/sep\/10\/elizabeth-warren-unloads-on-trump-administration-o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">it couldn&#8217;t see a way forward<\/a> to <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-18042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Taunton-casino-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Taunton-casino-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Taunton-casino-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Taunton-casino.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>taking the land into trust for gaming purposes.\u00a0U.S. District Court Judge <strong>William G. Young<\/strong> had relied upon <em>Carcieri v. Salazar<\/em> precedent to block the casino, saying the 1934 <strong>Indian Reorganization Act<\/strong> took priority over the tribe&#8217;s desire for federal recognition.\u00a0\u201cThe decision by the Trump administration to move forward with denying the Mashpee Wampanoag a right to their ancestral homeland and to keep their reservation is an injustice,\u201d wrote Sen. <strong>Elizabeth Warren<\/strong> (D) and Sen. <strong>Ed Markey<\/strong> (D) in a response to the <strong>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/strong>&#8216; abandonment of the Wampanoag.<\/p>\n<p>The two senators are working on <!--more-->the long-promised &#8220;<em>Carcieri<\/em> fix,&#8221; the\u00a0<strong>Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Reservation Reaffirmation Act<\/strong>. Unfortunately, since it is tailor-made to fit one tribe and one <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-22114\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Elizabeth_Warren.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Elizabeth_Warren.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Elizabeth_Warren-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>tribe only, it is open to criticism. Even were it more broadly intended, its chances would be slim. Because Republicans. Calling the ruling &#8220;years overdue,&#8221; attorney <strong>David Tennant<\/strong>, who represents <strong>East Taunton<\/strong> residents opposed to the casino (and has never played <a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/540376\/facts-about-david-tennant-doctor-who\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Who<\/a>, to our knowledge), said,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s so unfair to say, \u2018Oh, this is the Trump administration undoing the Obama administration.\u2019 This is the <strong>Department of Interior<\/strong>, which has been under the control of career people who have a pro-tribal bias, and they understood for years that the Mashpee weren\u2019t going to be able to prove eligibility under the statute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taunton<\/strong> Mayor <strong>Thomas Hoye Jr<\/strong>. responded,\u00a0\u201cI feel for the Mashpee tribe,&#8221; and said he would put his backing into congressional action now. He&#8217;s going against <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Gina Raimondo<\/strong>, who understandably is opposed to the Mashpee tribe\u00a0being poised to threaten her own casino market, 30 miles distant. Casino backers in <strong>Brockton<\/strong> also hailed the BIA decision, as they&#8217;d like a second bite of the apple. If Warren (and Markey) can pull this &#8220;<em>Carcier<\/em>i fix&#8221; off, Mashpee backer <strong>Genting Group<\/strong> will owe a big vote of thank$ come November.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere on <strong>Capitol Hill<\/strong>, incoming Sen. <strong>Jon Kyl<\/strong> (R) may be the newest member of the Schumer Gang, the small coalition of <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22364\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Schumer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Schumer.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Schumer-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>senators that thinks regulating sports betting is too important to be left to the states (and never mind that the federal government has zero experience in this activity).\u00a0\u201cThe stakes are too high\u2014legal sports betting laws must be crafted and executed in a careful and thoughtful way.\u00a0The integrity of sports is too precious to not protect as best we can,\u201d Sen. <strong>Charles Schumer<\/strong> (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/federal-betting-oversight-gets-real\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">piously intoned<\/a>. Yes, and you&#8217;re probably planning on levying some &#8220;integrity fees&#8221; in return for the privilege of being overseen by Uncle Sam.<\/p>\n<p>Sports books would undoubtedly be shaken down, at federal behest, in order to obtain betting information directly from the major leagues, which <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/survey-predicts-nfl-to-reap-more-than-2-billion-from-legal-sports-betting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already stand to make out like bandits<\/a>. DFS investors like <strong>Robert Kraft<\/strong> and <strong>Jerry Jones<\/strong> would also have to sell their <strong>DraftKings<\/strong> shares. Constraints on advertising and age of eligibility to wager would also be imposed <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-22410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/slane-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/slane.jpg 232w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/slane-116x150.jpg 116w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/>on an across-the-board basis. Racetrack owner <strong>Jeff Gural<\/strong> had a trenchant retort for the Schumer Gang.\u00a0\u201cIf you look at wagering on horseracing, there is no federal legislation. Every state regulates it.\u00a0Every state has its own rules for lotteries.\u201d Point well taken.\u00a0<strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> spokeswoman <strong>Sara Slane<\/strong> piled on, adding,\u00a0\u201cFederal oversight of sports betting was an abject failure for 26 years, only contributing to a thriving illegal market with no consumer protections and safeguards. New federal mandates are a non-starter.\u201d Let&#8217;s hope so.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Dan Gilbert<\/strong>&#8216;s roving eye has settled upon the <strong>Detroit Tigers<\/strong>, sources say. And since <strong>Major League Baseball<\/strong> takes an exceedingly dim view of gambling, <strong>Jack Entertainment<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbnews.com\/article\/jack-for-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already on the sale block<\/a>. You could also pick up <strong>Turfway Park<\/strong> in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong>, but that&#8217;s lagniappe. Gilbert has never been a great casino owner, so we applaud this move. Look for <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> and <strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong> to be tipped as potential buyers. But what if, having sold its Ohio interests years ago, <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> wants back into the Buckeye State. Wouldn&#8217;t that be ironic?<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> chefs <strong>Bobby Flay<\/strong> and <strong>Giada DeLaurentiis<\/strong> play themselves in <a href=\"https:\/\/dvd.netflix.com\/Movie\/Scooby-Doo-and-the-Gourmet-Ghost\/81013487?trkid=201886046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the latest Scooby-Doo movie<\/a>. You tell me: Is this an upward or downward move for them?
