{"id":22645,"date":"2018-10-10T08:57:40","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T16:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=22645"},"modified":"2018-10-10T08:57:40","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T16:57:40","slug":"ohio-up-missouri-down-and-caesars-tries-harder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/ohio-up-missouri-down-and-caesars-tries-harder\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio up, Missouri down and Caesars tries harder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although it will forever be a mystery why <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> evacuated <strong>Ohio<\/strong>, now that gaming revenues in the Buckeye State are on the upswing, it&#8217;s understandable that <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16136\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mark-Frissora.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mark-Frissora.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mark-Frissora-150x79.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>CEO <strong>Mark Frissora<\/strong> would want to get back in. Last month, gross gaming revenues were $152 million, a 4% increase, powered by an 8% improvement at the racinos. (Casino business was static.) <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<strong>Hollywood Toledo<\/strong> was flat at $16 million, while <strong>Hollywood Columbus<\/strong> slid 5% to $17.5 million. But <strong>Hollywood Dayton<\/strong> was up 2.5% to $8.5 million and <strong>Hollywood Mahoning Valley<\/strong> jumped 5.5% to $10 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dan Gilbert<\/strong>&#8216;s on-the-auction-block <strong>Jack Entertainment<\/strong> properties were led by <strong>Jack Thistledown<\/strong>, up 10% to $10 million. <strong>Jack Cincinnati<\/strong> had a good month, up <!--more-->3% to $16 million, but Gilbert continues to struggle in <strong>Cleveland<\/strong> proper, down 1% to $16 million. (Maybe if the calendar hadn&#8217;t been unfavorable, with one fewer weekend day, <strong>Jack Cleveland<\/strong> might have at least come out even.) <strong>Hard Rock Rocksino<\/strong> put everyone to shame with $22 million, vaulting 12%. <strong>Belterra Park<\/strong> was up 5% to $7 million and <strong>Scioto Downs<\/strong> jumped 7% to $14.5 million. If the Ohio market proves anything, it&#8217;s that you don&#8217;t need table games to prosper in a regional market. Just ask\u00a0<strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, new owner of Hard Rock.<\/p>\n<p>* That lost weekend day was definitely felt in <strong>Missouri<\/strong>, where gross gaming revenues were down 1%, at $144 million. All the outstate casinos were down, with <strong>Isle of Capri Cape Girardeau<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Ameristar-KC-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Ameristar-KC-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Ameristar-KC-2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>tumbling 14% to $5 million. In the <strong>Kansas City<\/strong> market, only <strong>Ameristar Kansas City<\/strong> gained, up 3.5% to $16.5 million. <strong>Argosy Riverside<\/strong> ($13.5 million) was flat, <strong>Harrah&#8217;s North Kansas City<\/strong> was down 2% to $15 million and <strong>Isle of Capri Kansas City<\/strong> slid 9% to $5.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>St. Louis<\/strong>, <strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong> cleaned up at <strong>Lumiere Place<\/strong>, up 12.5% and grossing $13 million. Everyone else lost market share. <strong>Hollywood St. Louis<\/strong> was down 3% to $19.5 million, <strong>Ameristar St. Charles<\/strong> was down 1.5% to $22 million, still good enough to dominate the market, and <strong>River City<\/strong> slipped 3% to $18 million.<\/p>\n<p>* Kudos to Caesars\u00a0for taking the lead in shattering the glass ceiling in gaming. \u201cCaesars\u2019<strong> Atlantic City<\/strong>\u00a0resorts \u2014 <strong>Bally\u2019s<\/strong>, <strong>Caesars<\/strong> and <strong>Harrah\u2019s Resort<\/strong> \u2014 are <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14803\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/caesarscasino_1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/caesarscasino_1.png 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/caesarscasino_1-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><br \/>\ncurrently ahead of the national average in terms of gender equity, with 40 percent of our female employees in manager roles and above,\u201d said Harrah&#8217;s Resort General Manager <strong>Katie Hall<\/strong>. <em>The Press of Atlantic City<\/em> reports that &#8220;the company has already introduced several steps \u2014 such as four weeks paid-family leave and equitable benefits for all employees \u2014 toward its ultimate goal.&#8221; Nor is Caesars is claiming that the job is done, but rather says that there is farther to go. Good on them.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> is, despite its self-proclaimed identity as a foodie magnet, only the 7th-best city in the <strong>United States<\/strong> for dining, according to <strong>WalletHub<\/strong>. Mind you, it is #1 for affordability and accessibility of highly rated restaurants. It is also fourth in restaurants per capita. But it is 74th for average beer and wine price (the $9 beer is evidently pervasive), and 35th for craft breweries and wineries. At least Vegas is seventh in gourmet food stores per capita, enabling to salvage its honor.<\/p>\n<p>* The next time <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> says people &#8220;don&#8217;t look like Indians&#8221; to him (one shudders to think what lurid images of &#8216;Indians&#8217; inhabit Trump&#8217;s brain) someone should remind him that, before he moved to the <strong>White House<\/strong>, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/culture\/web\/a23652890\/tribal-map-indigenous-peoples-day-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lived on land<\/a> stolen from its ancestral inhabitants. For instance, the acreage now occupied by <strong>Trump Tower<\/strong> was once roamed by the <strong>Mohegan<\/strong> band, and the <strong>Lenape<\/strong> tribe called what would become <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> their home.
